UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

I am amazed at the ridiculousness of this thread.

1. Hart is letting Souza know that when he is in that stadium, he is under his management and subpar performances, terrible song choice, and abysmal halftime shows (all of which have become the norm) will not be tolerated.
2. Because of #1, Hart is the man. We have a lethal combination in Hart and Jones.
3. Living on a Prayer is terrible and I hope I never hear it again in Neyland Stadium.
4. Hart isn't removing the band from the games, he is just limiting the amount they play unless they show that they can step it up and contribute to the desired atmosphere.
5. For pulling this stunt, I hope that the Band Director is fired and humiliated.
6. Little Doggie in the Window and Wizard of Oz.
7. We do not have one of the best bands in the nation, we have one of the worst band in the SEC and it is time for change.

You missed the point of that show. Patti Paige, who made famous the Tennessee Waltz (the STATE song), made her first appearance ever in Neyland Stadium. The doggy song was only because that was pretty much the only other song that she's known for.

The band should only be heard/seen pre-game and halftime.

Figure out a diff way to do rocky top.

Bands are so boring.

Times have changed kids wanna see the bright lights and loud music an if UT wants to make it back it must change with the times. They aren't getting rid of the band they just want them to stop with the boring crap like a trumpet solo at half time no disrespect but does that really have a place at a SEC football game? If you answered yes to that question then your more than likely in the sit down and quit yelling at the game crowd. Adapt or die that's what dave hart is doing. If this team wins 10 games next year do you really think anyone is going to give a damn about not hearing living on a prayer? Hell no

It's all about money and money buys players. Can't see where the confusion lies in all of this. :loco:

Do you even know what the band is playing at that point, or are you just retarded?

That doesn't make it any more appropriate to play at a football game. It just highlights how out of touch the band director is.

Agreed on all points. Good post.

Yeah, it is wrong to bring in the person who has had a significant influence on the tradition of the University to a game against OHIO UNIVERSITY, a non-conference nobody, to a game in Neyland honoring her. Just like it was wrong to bring in Bobby Osborne to play Rocky Top at homecoming.

I'm glad you have seen the light.

I'm all about these 'proposed changes' if true.

The band is great en route to the stadium and for playing Rocky Top. They are okay at half time, and generally are below average everywhere else.

Pump in the music and get that place rocking.

I have a few friends in the MTSU band (widely known). When they came to Knoxville 2 years ago, their band blew ours out of the water. They were so much louder and played so many new and upbeat songs. Even though they were losing pretty bad, their fans were dancing and everything throughout the whole game. It's time Sousa either quits or decides not to be stubborn and get new music

I agree that there needs to be some new things played, but I won't agree that things like the Waltz, bringing in influential parts of our history, and other things need to change.

Honestly I have no interest in anything the band plays at half time and my money says if you ask players or recruits I can just about guarantee you that 99.9% of them don't care either. Funny thing is everyone is pinning this on Dave hart if you don't think CBJ had a say so in this as well your crazy. I see crying on here oh the band cant go to mizzou blah blah blah UGA brought the pep band they use for bball games up from Athens 3.5 hour drive and they are playing winning football.

For years, you could look at the Pride in the stands at Neyland and feel the apathy. There was no caring. Half-assed, cappy hornflashes by half of the band during half of the crappy songs for upwards of a decade? Sit there acting apathetic for that long and suddenly the AD is gonna have to make a change to put life back into the music in Neyland.
The Pride shows that it doesn't care about in-stand playing for years, then suddenly cares so much once that privilege is revoked. Devote more time and more effort to playing better in the stands: better songs with more excitement, less apathy, and more flashes.
THAT'S how you save the Pride. Raise the bar. Excite the fans. Don't ride the coattails of the fans that are excited in spite of you.

I agree with all of this.

When Ohio came into our house in 2009 and showed our band up at every step of the way, I was ready to get rid of our band altogether.

They had half the kids and twice the volume and entertainment volume.

I love traditions, but let's make some new ones to mix in there.

PS - Living on a Prayer makes me cringe every time they play it.

Name 3 SEC bands that are better than the Pride. If you say anyone other than LSU, you will really show you're as ignorant as spelling Sousa's name wrong.

1.) Ohio did not outplay the Pride, even with the smaller numbers in the Pride.

2.) Ohio's band sounds like absolute garbage. And that's a compliment.

3.) They don't march at all. They stop playing, move to a spot and sound like my craps in the morning.

4.) It's pathetic that people think watching college kids get on their hands and knees and be ridden by their peers is entertaining other than to laugh at them.

Exactly our point. People who know nothing about it are the ones trying to change it. That's like me trying to change what goes on with the volleyball team.

I'm all for the band....but change is needed. So OLD. I believe in tradition but some new material would be great every now and then. The same EXACT pre-game show since I was a student in the 90's. Just tweak it a bit from time to time with of course the core songs.

Just my 2.5 cents.
