I'm not sure I've ever heard it more than once in a game.
How do you feel about the Aggie's band?
This. Ohio brought some entertainment value, and that was about it.
Does our stadium have the acoustics to play speaker music well? I know when I was there last year our sound system sounded like it was still back in 1950. As long as we are still marching through the T and have Rocky Top after big plays I am cool with it.
UT's statement on this issue.
UT Statement on Gameday Atmosphere - UTSPORTS.COM - University of Tennessee Athletics
Here's a picture of one page that I've gotten from a good friend of mine, a band member, which he got from a squad leader. He doesn't have the 2nd page yet
edit: here's the 2nd page
Based on those 2 pages, my guess is that they felt they were being told "No Down the Field" because it says they can't play during the play (Pride always plays Down the Field after a TD, quiets down during the PAT, then finishes at full volume) coupled with the comment about being able to start the break with Rocky Top after scores.
It seems their are a lot of people mouthing off about the band not traveling for out of town games because of cost. Well how many of you actually have season tickets with the contributions that go with it. And think about the liability ins. travel stipends, bus rentals it isn't cheap. So unless people are ready to give money. and I mean a lot of money, something has to give. Do the math, just saying. I love the band, circle drill the best it always gives me goose bumps, but come on can these bright and talent kids not be allowed to play more up dated music. It's 2013 (living on a prayer, and send in the clowns this Saturday) come on. Can we not have tradition and fun. And hey I'm a 59.
This isn't about what the players want. This is about money. No traveling band saves money. Commercials during dead periods instead of the band makes money. Fewer band members in the stands = more tickets to sell which makes money.
Despite budget cuts impacting virtually every sport and department within UT Athletics over the last two seasons, the band's 2013-14 fiscal year operating budget ($1,125,669) is less than one percent (0.8%) lower than it was in 2011-12 ($1,134,669), attesting to the continued priority placed on investment in the band.
We are One Tennessee, and Saturday night brought that into clear focus. To reach our destination and achieve our goals, we have to stay on the same path. Our band will always play a major role in the Tennessee football gameday experience, and any insinuation to the contrary is inaccurate.
There is really a quite simple solution. Boycott any advertisers that take away our band. Or perhaps smart advertisers might sponsor the band songs during the game.
Either way Dave Hart is trying to sell our traditions for a few pieces of silver.

Excerpt
"From Sousa's perspective, however, the Georgia game stands as the most obvious manifestation to date of the issues the band is facing, specifically an instance that occurred while the Bulldogs warmed up on the field prior to the game.
"At the end of their warm-up, they turned and put their helmets in the air and started walking in a straight line, slowly across the field, which is unbelievably disrespectful to the University of Tennessee," Sousa said. "It's an 'in your face' kind of situation, and traditionally, what would have happened is that the band would have played 'Rocky Top' as loud as they could have played it, and the fans would have erupted and they would have shut them down, but we were about to play 'Rocky Top' and they were playing the rap music from the D.J., and we were told specifically 'do not play.'""
The UGA game was a great balance and is the new model. Band still played plenty. Anyone opining for more stand tunes as they presently exist should bring a cassette player and some mix tapes.
