UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

First of all, the band started decades before the football team, so literally yes. Without the existence of the football team, the band would still exist.

All 100k are there to watch football. I never said that they weren't. I said that the band is there to enhance the experience. The stupid point you're trying to make is invalid.

The football revenue supports the band. How would the band continue its current makeup without the football team?

So your argument about the band existing without the football team is as invalid as the point you are disputing.

It's easy to understand why so many are upset about the changes that will be made. But let's be honest about the significance of the band minus rocky top, fight song, and pre-game. Anyone who disputes that is in the minority.

Atmosphere without the band would feel bizarre. I don't pay too much attention to the band, but that is a big part of what makes it feel like a college game.

If the band didn't do anything with sports, it could still survive. It would be the same way that there are concert ensembles.

The fact that this petition was drafted up (poorly, might I add) by the Drum Major is also pretty unprofessional.

If anything, this email and the petition highlights the divide between the departments. That's sad.

For years, you could look at the Pride in the stands at Neyland and feel the apathy. There was no caring. Half-assed, cappy hornflashes by half of the band during half of the crappy songs for upwards of a decade? Sit there acting apathetic for that long and suddenly the AD is gonna have to make a change to put life back into the music in Neyland.
The Pride shows that it doesn't care about in-stand playing for years, then suddenly cares so much once that privilege is revoked. Devote more time and more effort to playing better in the stands: better songs with more excitement, less apathy, and more flashes.
THAT'S how you save the Pride. Raise the bar. Excite the fans. Don't ride the coattails of the fans that are excited in spite of you.

Pow.

Perfectly stated.

What???? Misinformation abound?! No effing way...

Just another chapter in the book of "What will VN ***** about today?"

Just look at the title of the other thread:

Cutting the band!!!! Are you kidding me!!!!

The over-reaction was right in the title.

I understand being sick of bon Jovi, but at Braves games, it is always the song that most of the stadium clamors for during the stretch. Point being, I'm sure there are tons more fans that actually like the song as it is played by the band.

Apparently this was a concerted effort by the band. I've been waiting for a reply by the AD. After reading the email that was posted, it looks like there's some considerable differences of opinion on how this thing goes down.

Interesting because it was very similar to yours.

Argue for no reason much?

Your point is irrelevant because nothing significant is changing with the band. The reasons you mentioned for loving college football, the pageantry, aren't changing at Tennessee. You would be the one continuing to argue for no reason.

Well, put in my billing info and all for my grey jersey about 10 minutes ago and I clicked submit. Then it said error. Guess I won't be getting mine...

How so? Just curious.

Well, she had some spelling issues in there (threated) and inconsistencies of capitalization (capitalizing Vol Walk, PotS but not Athletic Department). The AD is an organization and deserves just as much recognition as the PotS does, certainly. That's bad, at least in my book, if you're trying to draft up something that gets a large amount of attention... especially if you're doing so as the Drum Major representing a national University. It looks thrown together and unchecked.

Apart from that, this thing is laced with hyperbole. No actual facts are presented... just conjecture. It honestly reads like a "FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW:" e-mail that has a lot of pomp and no circumstance.

And yes, that was a pun.
