UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

I've said for years, even when I marched, that they needed to update their music folder for the stands. That's no secret.

However, there have been countless times, in both football and basketball, where there was a huge play for the Vols and Rocky Top was expected but not there because of marketing crap on the video boards. It's easy for you to say that, but when there are people with headsets, ie gameday officials, telling you you can't do something, it makes it difficult to "go crazy" as you put it.

By 'Go Crazy', I mean play at a level we haven't seen the Pride do in a long time. Play Loud. Play Relevant Tunes. Play Entertaining Shows at Halftime.

The Pride's leadership and general membership have taken their opportunities for granted for far too long. Instead of evolving and getting better, they become complacent, hiding behind 'tradition'.

Now those opportunities are being taken away and instead of taking it as a wake up call, they are throwing a temper tantrum via an online petition and student newspaper. Hopefully acting like toddlers is the first step towards acceptance and eventually action.

I have no problem with that. IMO the most annoying thing about gamedays is the "Orange, White" cheer before the game that no one cares about.

No lie. If they're going to do that, the guy on the mic has to have crazy good charisma. It just doesn't work.

You know...have fun.

Maybe they are having a good time and it doesn't show...but a lot of them look like the kid that isn't enjoying playing baseball anymore but his dad sends him to multiple skills camps and has him in travel ball.

Absolutely.

When I was a student and had 20+ friends in the Pride, this summed up how about 75% of them felt about it by the end of year 2.

You see a lot of people drop out after the second year. Music majors are in it for the class requirement and other people get burned out.

From Volquest on the band stuff:

Couple of things from the band article in the Beacon... Reply
After reading the Beacon article this morning and talking to more people this morning. There are a couple
of things I wanted to pass along and hopefully the Chancellor will get this situation handled internally.

First of all, there's been a lot discussion about the band losing playing time. Here are numbers from
three games based on information provided to Volquest by game operations.

The Akron game in 2012, the band had 36:40 of playing time for the game. The Georgia game last week, the band had just over 56 minutes of playing time. In the second had they had 40:30 of time and that doesn't include overtime. Part of the
reason for a difference in 20 minutes total time from Akron and Georgia is that CBS commercial breaks are 2:30 seconds long which is longer than ESPN breaks.

In Western Kentucky 2013, the band had 44:40 of playing time for the game. So according to game operations band playing time hasn't been reduced.

Also in the article it's was stated that the athletic department wouldn't hear the bands complaints and wouldn't return emails. Each week of a home game, there is a game operations meeting which includes all facets of the stadium from P.A.
to jumbotron to all areas of game production. Included in that meeting is the band. Dr. Sousa has elected to never attend one of those meetings. Often times, Dr. Sousa sends an assistant to the meeting where concerns are discussed and the rundown script is produced. But the band doesn't always chose to attend.

And finally, I'm trying to get a game copy to see when Georgia was whooping it up at the end of their pre-game warm up to see if the band was still in the stands capable of playing Rocky Top or if they were on the sidelines scattered about getting ready to march onto the field to start their pre-game routine.

Now, it's unfortunate that the band members are being thrust in the middle of this. They are a big part of the Neyland Stadium experience. They have a passion for what they do and they work hard at what they do.

I'm still not sure they are being given complete information and they are being thrown into something publicly that makes it look like them vs. football which is unfair to them.

It's going to be interesting to see how Chancellor Cheek and his office handle this situation moving forward to try and defuse it.

Those times given have to include pregame and halftime shows. And just because there is time available, doesn't mean the opportunity was there. For instance, Georgia had a pep band and would trade out time for playing.

Say what now?

There are waaaaay to many retiree aged Vol fans to ever do away with the band. To them it adds to the pagentry!

Those are actual times the band played.

There's also too many younger people who understand that the Pride is an integral part of the gameday experience, as opposed to some people who are so narrow minded.

I'd like to see an actual record of those numbers. Because I've never heard of any gameday officials keeping track of this until now, when they are trying to defend their actions.

I doubt its really even 'keeping track of it'. Its scripted beforehand. They know going in, barring weird delays (weather, etc) how much time they will have for band, commercials, video packages, etc. They might not know when, but they know how long.

No need to keep track when its already laid out beforehand.

And because I've never heard of Livin' on a Prayer and Neck referred to as Classics until now, when the band is trying to defend it's actions.

Livin' On A Prayer is not what they are really talking about. They are talking about Orange Blossom Special, Mountain Dew/I Saw the Light, those type songs. But I doubt you know what those are. And, yet again, Livin' On A Prayer is the most recent song added to the folder that the student section gets excited for.

I'm sure there are a lot of things you have never heard of that are true. Sousa is the problem here wether you want to admit it or not.

Have you ever worked with the man? No? Thought so. And, for about the thousandth time, I agree that there needs to be new music in the folders. Holy hell, I'm not that dense, unlike some of you.
