UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

I'm sorry, but saying somebody is trying to restrain Rocky Top is pure garbage. Nothing has come out that has even hinted at that except for the ramblings of people trying to rile up the masses.

It basically boils down to playing a little more "canned" music in the down times in the course of the game. This is needed to enhance the atmoshphere by attracting a younger audience.

It just seems to me that if the band is trying to rile the students up into supporting them, they had better look at the avg attendance of those students the last 4-5 years. Most don't even care about the football game itself, much less the band. I love the POTSLMB, and love the atmoshphere that bands, in general, provide. However, this has been a MASSIVE overreaction and will account to much of nothing in the way of a noticeable change.

Go to many basketball games? There are way too many times after a huge 5 sec call, or a UT run that forces opponents to call timeout that the pep band can't play Rocky Top because of Marketing crap. It'll happen here, too.

This. The band will continue to be a major part of gamedays.

In theory, Rocky Top is played after every huge play or before every big down, currently. With the alterations to in-stand playing time, this would take away their ability to play Rocky Top (or some other fitting short tune) in lieu of some song over the speakers.

You're talking in hypotheticals. None of which will actually happen. The band will play Rocky Top plenty during games.

Livin' On A Prayer is not what they are really talking about. They are talking about Orange Blossom Special, Mountain Dew/I Saw the Light, those type songs. But I doubt you know what those are. And, yet again, Livin' On A Prayer is the most recent song added to the folder that the student section gets excited for.

Yes, I know what those songs are. I grew up in E. TN and went to games well before you were born!

The original email passed around said this, "Now instead of hearing classics like the Vol spellout, Living on a Prayer, and Neck you instead listen to "canned" music from the loudspeakers..."

So yeah, those songs really are what they're talking about.

Sousa claims band injustices, UT refutes allegations | The Daily Beacon

"That sentiment rose to a new level on Saturday at Neyland Stadium during Tennessee's 34-31 overtime loss to Georgia when Sousa alleges that the band was told not to play UT's unofficial fight song, "Rocky Top."

"They decided it was time for them to play the pre-recorded canned music and dictated to the band that this would happen and that the band was not supposed to play," Sousa told The Daily Beacon. "We've never been told not to play 'Rocky Top' and we were told, 'you do not play 'Rocky Top.''"

Hope your right though but consider me one of the "riled up masses."

Dave Hart to Sousa regarding the South Carolina game:

"Yeah, that's it. I got a student alt rock band coming on next. Sousa, I own six speaker cities. I am worth three-and-a-half-million dollars that the government knows about. I got more electronics up there than a damn KISS concert. You think I'm gonna roll out this type of red carpet for a ******* marching band? Just make sure you can see the stage."

It's not hypothetical. If they say "you cannot play before or after 3rd down," then you cannot play Rocky Top before or after 3rd down.

Nothing about that is hypothetical.

The band is still going to play Rocky Top during games.

The frequency of it, however, will be limited and dictated as such by people other than the band. That's the point that I'm making. That is wrong.

I fully support them playing canned music instead of other garbage songs from 3 decades ago, as long as the band can say "suck my dick we're playing Rocky Top right now because we are Tennessee and, by God, Rocky Top needs to be played right now."

Couldn't agree more with this.

No, I don't. I marched 4 years and that's the last thing I want. But you started this by not understanding how the money flow would work by cutting the band, so I enlightened you about it. I marched in 07 when UK complained about us marching Circle Drill on their UK logo and half their board was talking about how much it sucked that their team came out after halftime to an Advance Auto Parts commercial. So, yes, advertisements in the stadium work because they remembered the actual commercial. That's the only point I was making. If I had my way, there'd be no piped music, only the band.

The guy I was originally discuss this with said "the band was told not to play Rocky Top in Neyland". That simply isn't true.

If you can prove that the statement is false, then go for it.

From all the information available right now, however, you cannot falsify that claim.

I feel so bad for how much crap Sousa's taking, yet nobody is saying Ryder's name. Ryder is the one who picks the garbage in the folder and dictates the horridly small amount of time given to practicing those songs and learning flashes to make the song more entertaining.

If it wasn't obvious, I loathe Ryder.

I too am a member of the F Ryder group. brb ending another song in 3 whole notes.

When I was there we weren't allowed to do any horn flashes outside of the few in Rocky Top or Down the Field. It was an "all the band or none of the band" but then they'd tell sections not to do it, so 'none of the band' it was.

It was reported by the Beacon and Sousa specifically said that's how it went down. Now I don't know Sousa, the people I know who have band ties do not like how he handles things but like who he is as a person.

With that said he's either lying, he misunderstood, or he's telling the truth.

I'm assuming that you think he's lying or misunderstood?

I guarantee if the band practiced enough, cared enough, and played a better selection, that Neyland would be rocking this loudly solely because the Pride was playing.

Sadly, that just doesn't happen. Play better songs with more enthusiasm and louder, and voila.

The better songs would bring more enthusiasm and volume. It gets old when you have 60+ songs to choose from and play the same 12.

Yes

I doubt its really even 'keeping track of it'. Its scripted beforehand. They know going in, barring weird delays (weather, etc) how much time they will have for band, commercials, video packages, etc. They might not know when, but they know how long.

No need to keep track when its already laid out beforehand.
Not true. You don't know how or when TO's are going to be used or things like measurements or injuries. Way too many factors to be scripted. I was in band way too long to know that you sometimes have about a second to get the horn ready to play when the drum major commands.

Anyone know whats going on with Dave Hart trying to switch the band playing at games to prerecorded music? My twitter feed is blowing up with band members that are saying this. Anyone care to clarify?

Advice For The AD

This is what happens when a guy uses hair dye. It seeps into his brain and his judgment becomes bizarre. Quit grasping for youth.

When your face looks 60 and your hair looks 15, you look out of contrast.
