UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

When UGA brought their whole band they tried to play over Tennessee all the time.

Better percent of opposing bands do play over Tennessee. I don't understand why the issue at hand doesn't pertain to the visiting band too. They never stop playing. Speaking of which, my husband and I both noticed how much quieter our band was last Saturday. That sad representation for Georgia kept on playing, there we sat like knots on a log. This wasn't imagined either.

GO VOLS..
GO BIG ORANGE ... :rock::whistling:

No one is dense, we are having a civil conversation. I agree some of the music needs to change. Not the traditional songs just the in between stuff. We've been saying this for years- maybe a former or present member of the Pride can tell me what is the song we play when it sounds like dread? I know that makes no sense but it's evident that needs to change..

Have you ever worked with the man? No? Thought so. And, for about the thousandth time, I agree that there needs to be new music in the folders. Holy hell, I'm not that dense, unlike some of you.

I wouldn't waste my time trying to argue with this guy, or agreeing with him for that matter. He just likes arguing for arguments sake.

By 'Go Crazy', I mean play at a level we haven't seen the Pride do in a long time. Play Loud. Play Relevant Tunes. Play Entertaining Shows at Halftime.

The Pride's leadership and general membership have taken their opportunities for granted for far too long. Instead of evolving and getting better, they become complacent, hiding behind 'tradition'.

Now those opportunities are being taken away and instead of taking it as a wake up call, they are throwing a temper tantrum via an online petition and student newspaper. Hopefully acting like toddlers is the first step towards acceptance and eventually action.

I can always count on Steve to drop the truth hammer. This is what I've been saying. Things have been stagnant for far too long. Far too many of the songs in the folders were there during my 2005 freshman year.
Don't complain and moan. Be better. Show the AD that they were wrong. Up until now, they've been right.

Saw it on facebook. Would think it's true. Seems lots of colleges and even high schools are cutting back on band travel. There is probably a distance the high school bands can travel, i'.e 20 miles. Totally different for colleges-no away travel. Not good!

It's quite obvious you are very dense.

I was in the band when this started happening. In 06,the full band went to every game except Arkansas, which was a 30 member pep band. In 2007, a 30 member pep band went to Cal, and a 60 member pep band to Miss. State. In 08, a 30 member to UCLA, and a 60 member to USC. In 09, it was 30 to Ole Miss and 60 to UK. Now they try to limit what they do in our own house? If I was Sousa, I'd threaten to not let the Pride do the pep rallies, the galas for the boosters, leave after the 3rd quarter like so many of our fans do who want to voice an opinion about this.

Every department has taken budget cuts. Georgia didn't bring a full bad last week. It's part of it. Sousa is welcome to do whatever he feels necessary. I just hope he is prepared to accept the consequences if calling out the University and AD.

I'm not complaining much about the travelling. I understand that. However, to restrain them from playing Rocky Top in Neyland Stadium is the most garbage thing I've heard since Kiffin was here.

Where have you seen that they won't be allowed to play Rocky Top?

well, theoretically, if the amount of time they can play anything is limited, then that would mean that there would be fewer opportunities to play Rocky Top

That isn't what he is saying though. He said not allowed to play Rocky Top in Neyland. The numbers I provided show the band have splayed the same amount of time compared to last year. I think this boils down to misinformation provided to the band by its director which isn't fair to the band.

But you obviously don't know everything the Pride does for the University and its patrons. There are weeks where they have rehearsal 7 hours M-F, a fundraiser for god knows what for 2 hours, welcoming home veterans at the airport for 1.5 hours, 2-3 hour rehearsal on Saturday, a pep rally (or two or three), the game, something they can't leave until after the game despite how crappy the product is, unlike those on here. All this for what? 1 hour of credit. The least the AD could do is not limit them in their own stadium.

You obviously missed where they tried to play Rocky Top while UGA players were acting like they owned the place and the gameday officials told them not to play.

False. If the band is being told "you cannot play at X time" and that is the time they would play Rocky Top (say they want to start playing Rocky Top after a stellar sack on 2nd down to get the fans singing), then they would be unable to play Rocky Top. A graphic would show on the screen and some song would play over the speakers instead of Rocky Top.

I enjoy the band and appreciate what they do. I'm not taking anything away from that. Yes the music choices need to improve and most agree on that. The problem appears to be misinformation on Sousa's part.

I'm sorry, but saying somebody is trying to restrain Rocky Top is pure garbage. Nothing has come out that has even hinted at that except for the ramblings of people trying to rile up the masses.

It basically boils down to playing a little more "canned" music in the down times in the course of the game. This is needed to enhance the atmoshphere by attracting a younger audience.

It just seems to me that if the band is trying to rile the students up into supporting them, they had better look at the avg attendance of those students the last 4-5 years. Most don't even care about the football game itself, much less the band. I love the POTSLMB, and love the atmoshphere that bands, in general, provide. However, this has been a MASSIVE overreaction and will account to much of nothing in the way of a noticeable change.

I feel so bad for how much crap Sousa's taking, yet nobody is saying Ryder's name. Ryder is the one who picks the garbage in the folder and dictates the horridly small amount of time given to practicing those songs and learning flashes to make the song more entertaining.

If it wasn't obvious, I loathe Ryder.

They play Rocky Top after every score do they not?

When I talk about Sousa I'm addressing the info he is giving the band members, which according to the University isn't accurate. I don't care who picks the songs.

In theory, Rocky Top is played after every huge play or before every big down, currently. With the alterations to in-stand playing time, this would take away their ability to play Rocky Top (or some other fitting short tune) in lieu of some song over the speakers.
