UTAD cutting band funding/involvement? (Merged)

I guarantee if the band practiced enough, cared enough, and played a better selection, that Neyland would be rocking this loudly solely because the Pride was playing.

Sadly, that just doesn't happen. Play better songs with more enthusiasm and louder, and voila.

Heh. To be fair, that particular song is rocking because the entire LSU student section's saying something particularly choice. But the point is still one I agree with - the band could be plenty relevant if it'll just make an effort to modernize itself. I'd far prefer a fresher and renewed Pride of the Southland over generic music played over the PA system. The former is unique and a part of UT's history and pageantry; something that makes Tennessee what it is. It's our sound. The latter is just ... well, exactly what people call it. Canned.

Not true. You don't know how or when TO's are going to be used or things like measurements or injuries. Way too many factors to be scripted. I was in band way too long to know that you sometimes have about a second to get the horn ready to play when the drum major commands.

That's not really true. Certainly, from your perspective as a band member, that is probably how it appears, but that's not the case.

Just like in basketball, there are a set number of media timeouts in each quarter, each with a set length. They are set for the first score/kick/injury/timeout/change of possession after certain times on the clock in each quarter.

Because these breaks are scheduled, the marketing department, in concert with the video production people and the band come up with a script as to what will happen in each of the scheduled breaks.

When there are extra stoppages, like injuries or timeouts, the band is cued by the production person on the headset to play or not play.

In the second quarter, they front load the stoppages with the band, since they depart for the field for halftime with 5:00 on the clock, meaning that the booth has to have canned music or a video ready for those stoppages, since the band does not play when it is getting ready for halftime.

It's not a simple "voila", imo.

I've said for years that UT doesn't have any cheers that the whole student body or crowd does. The Wooo doesn't count.

Look at the LSU video. The crowd and band are in concert (no pun intended). Go to a UF game. There are several things their band does in conjunction with the fans. Clemson, same thing. FSU with the war chant. You get the point.

The band seems separated outside the crowd except for the Wooo.

VOL spellout? Small riff plus 'Let's go U T'. Immigrant Song 'Go Vols' etc. etc.

sigh

Yeah. I feel as if most are in agreement that the band could use a sprucing up. Winning helps too, of course, but there's a need to add some new material and maybe "loosen the ties" a bit so to speak. That's really what I hope comes out of all this - a stronger, better, (dare I hope, larger?) Pride of the Southland. Here's hoping.

I see what you're saying, but look at the other examples I listed and tell me "Let's go UT" compares. It doesn't.

Yes, they have those things. But if said media timeout comes because of an interception, or the stadium gets so loud the offense has to take a timeout because they couldn't hear the audibles, etc, the band cannot play because they have to market the recycle bins at every exit, because that pumps up the crowd. Very similar to what I've said regarding basketball games.

So now you hate recycling?!

Just kidding. :)

Thanks DP. That's what I was driving at.

There have been many instances in both football and basketball where the script has been altered on the fly because of game circumstances like you mentioned.

The "commercials" like the Eastman ad you referenced were eliminated in-game two years ago. Now, every video may be sponsored, but none of them are commercials anymore. They are usually historical or in-game highlight videos with a presenting sponsor at the end.

I love the old videos and everything, but they are played at inopportune times. Even last year in TBA they'd get a stop, crowd would be going nuts and then the band couldn't play Rocky Top because of one of those things. Those things shouldn't take precedence over what the band could bring. That's where most of the frustration comes from.

1.) Ohio did not outplay the Pride, even with the smaller numbers in the Pride.

2.) Ohio's band sounds like absolute garbage. And that's a compliment.

3.) They don't march at all. They stop playing, move to a spot and sound like my craps in the morning.

4.) It's pathetic that people think watching college kids get on their hands and knees and be ridden by their peers is entertaining other than to laugh at them.

The butthurt is strong in this one.

Coach has done a fantastic job of building program and stresses and embraces tradition, power T, VFL, history of program. I don't think Coach Jones would appreciate losing the traditions of the band and the AD should not control how often they play Rocky Top, and should not dictate what the band plays and when they play. Opposing teams practice with Rocky Top playing to prepare for what teams will hear when playing in Neyland. Band helps egnite crowd with pre game performance and Rocky Top playing. Players past and present talk about running through T--formed by band.

so after having a day to digest things here's the conclusion that I've come to

Neither party is lying.

1) The AD is speaking of the here and now. They've not told them they can't play Down the Field...This year. which leads me to the next point

2) the Band members I know have stuck to their guns through this. I don't even know the Drum major and she and I have had some communication. They know what they saw and heard and they're sticking by it which leads to 3

3) The Band is talking about next year and into the future. They are being told this stuff comes into effect next year and honestly, if I was told I had to sit there and listen to Lil Wayne when I was perfectly capable of playing my Own Damn instrument to get the crowd pumped up with stuff like the VOLS cheer, I would feel disrespected too. Sure they could use some updating (There are certain things you can't get rid of. Mars and Carmina Burana will always be great for the purpose of football. They're intense and classic pieces), but you don't just skip that step and go "WELP TIME TO PLAY SOME STUFF ON OUR SHIITEY PA SYSTEM" Its an insult to a musician.

I don't mind the way UT seems to be managing the breaks. Over the last 5 or 6 years you could tell the crowd loses interest after about 1 minute of anything. In a 2.5min break, thats a lot of boredom.

Couple that with the Pride's admittedly awful stand songs and the atmosphere was getting rather...blah, at best.

If the Pride uses this as a chance to improve, then you could eventually get to a place where the band and the canned work together to keep things jumping. Canned/video package hands off to band or vice versa.

You have hit the essence of the situation. This year the band is aware of a creeping movement to cut them out of years of tradition. The A Dept denies it. I believe the band, but it will be easy enough to find out who is lying. If Chris Fuller (who by the way was on the search committee that brought us Dooley the Dud) is telling the truth, we won't be hearing c-rap, and commercials, during the game while the band is playing as they have done every game this year. If not, it will be easy enough to notice. And we now know band members, even the ones who communicate with the marketing guys during the game, have the courage to tell us.

It is ironic that the last person in our A Dept that mocked Tennessee traditions was Kiffin. If what the band members are saying is true, and I have reason to think it is, then we now have Chris Fuller mocking Tennessee traditions. The guy came to us from the Cleveland Cavaliers, and that is the atmosphere he wants here. If you want that stuff, go to Cleveland and leave us with what has made Football Time in Tennessee the envy of the nation.

Personally, if the A Dept wants to rob Tennessee, the fans, and the band of their traditions, IMO the band should deny them the "T" to run through. The A Dept shouldn't have a problem with that since they don't do it in Cleveland. Besides, that would be valuable advertisement time.
