'24 VA LB Chris Cole (uga commit)

would a kevin burnet comparison be valid?
That's a good one. Burnett was ahead of his time. Would have been more coveted with the advent of the spread today where LB are 215 lbs and need to be able to cover. Chavis had all kinds of great skill positions players that were great athletes and a little undersized that he turned into great LBs (Al Wilson, Eric Westmoreland, Dominique Stevenson, Eddie Moore, Burnett, etc.)

Yes, pass rush might be better this year. Secondary probably still a year away from big-time improvement (especially if we stick with the older guys that play 10-20 yards off on every play).
I was referring to the future, but secondary should be much improved simply due to health and an abundance of seniors.

The seniors are the ones I'm scared of. I would be in favor of starting the true freshman at DB, if Hadden, Turnage, Burrell, and McCullough play like they did last year.

We can even be slacking in some categories if we can get better at generating takeaways. With the efficiency of our offense, a few turnovers can put a team way behind and force them to play against their gameplan.
I remember playing Oregon thinking probably the same thing these teams are thinking… goodness I hope we can score with them…. And we didn’t score with Oregon and they can score with us.

I really hate bashing any players on the team, but to me Burrell has been the JG of the secondary. Ready for something different

Burrell hardly played. He was injured early, and they all missed spring and a chunk of summer due to injury. We have D. Slaughter and Jeudy-Lally as likely starters, but Hadden has had a tremendous off season. McCullough is still dealing with legal issues, so we'll see how that turns out. You are assuming that none of these guys progress with another year of development and knowing the defense though. There's an old football adage that goes "For every freshman you have to start, add 1 to the L column." I expect to see a few guys fight for some PT, but doubt any are ready for the SEC grind of the schedule as a starter.

Right, and honestly with how good our offense is and will be, we just need the defense to be solid. I still think they intend to build an aggressive, high pressure defense that creates turnovers.
What is wrong with being better than solid? Things evolve year to year, we want to develop strength on offense and defense. I keep hearing some say we just need to be better than average on D. No we need to be the best we can be on D. And I think Heupel wants a D that is very capable of slowing and stopping the best of teams. We want to be strong on both sides of the ball! We are getting there. GBO!

Hopefully you are right. Just some of the DB play last year was very bad (against Florida and South Carolina). We need to play the best players and not just the most experienced.

If that happens, then we win the East and are going to the playoffs.
Some good news, our rush defense was #21. Our pass defense (#127) was just Swiss cheese. I’m glad heupel has amplified that that’s a huge focus this off season. Even just a top 50-60 pass defense would be good enough. UGA and Clemson were both 50-70 range

Nothing is wrong with it...just saying the potency of our offense gives the defense a little more room for error. I'm speaking in regard to us winning games and titles. I'm all for an elite defense as anyone else would be. For example, as bad as the Pruitt offense was, he would need a defense similar to what UGA has fielded the last two seasons to win a lot of games.

Every single scholarship DB missed time last spring and summer due to injury. A good number missed ALL of it. we will better from that standpoint alone.
