'24 VA LB Chris Cole (uga commit)

Yeah, I get wanting to play zone so you don't turn your back to Richardson, but we were playing 15-20 yards off of everyone.
Yeah I don't think that game was the best scheme. We gave up way too much cushion so it was easy to pick us apart. Thankfully we got just enough stops to win. I don't think that game had a single punt.

What is wrong with being better than solid? Things evolve year to year, we want to develop strength on offense and defense. I keep hearing some say we just need to be better than average on D. No we need to be the best we can be on D. And I think Heupel wants a D that is very capable of slowing and stopping the best of teams. We want to be strong on both sides of the ball! We are getting there. GBO!
Of course everyone wants to be the best. But we can win with an average defense because of our offense. Doesn’t mean we want to stay average. Just keep getting better at every position while building quality depth.

That I believe was the oh crap moment for the defense. The secondary player horrible and they let off too much, that was one the coaching staff learned from fortunately for

The buzz: Next weekend will be important for linebacker Chris Cole. The defender out of Virginia made a big move in the updated On300 earlier this month and he will be back in Knoxville next weekend. That is likely his last visit before he makes a decision. Tennessee had Cole on campus in the spring and the Vols are still a team to watch. Georgia is the school I hear the most about with Miami and Virginia Tech there as well. An August decision is expected for the four-star linebacker.

Keep mining the state of Virginia for high rated talent.
Salem has good players occasionally but the real hotbed in VA is the Tidewater area (Norfolk and Hampton Roads). It’s a long way to Knoxville from Tidewater but UVA sucks, UMD is nothing special and VT is down at the moment, so worth exploring.

Hopefully you are right. Just some of the DB play last year was very bad (against Florida and South Carolina). We need to play the best players and not just the most experienced.
Trust is a big thing with Banks and Martinez. Imo sometimes misplaced to a fault favoring time spent on campus. Maybe more pass rush pressure vindicates them.

The Florida game had a lot to do with how we chose to defend Richardson.

Kentucky played them first and there was 60 minutes of game film. Either we didn’t have the same type of personnel or Banks called a crappy game. I know Napier called a more aggressive game on the road and played to ARs strengths but we made a guy look all SEC who almost lost to South Florida the week before.

I’m glad the staff doesn’t take this approach.

Can’t believe anyone would scold someone else for saying the 128th ranked pass defense needs improvement. Epic sunshine poisoning. Get some aloe vera for that.

Do you know what happens when a team is down by 2 or 3 TDs and the other team's offense is so dynamic they are a threat to score on every drive? No. They throw the ball more to even have a shot at catching up. Opposing offenses averaged 40 passing attempts against us last year which gained an average of just shy of 300 yes per game. When you increase the number of passing plays a defense faces, you will naturally increase the number of yards given up as well. This will cause your passing defense to appear worse than it really is in reality. That doesn't mean they can't and shouldn't improve, but taking that stat out of context is disingenuous because they yielded only an average of 1.5 passing TDs per game. Who cares if opponents stack up yards all game long. If they don't score TDs they aren't going to be able to beat us.

Lol. Just because we won does not mean our defense or more specifically our DBs played well. We won because offense played well.
We had just lost Burrell for the season and had other injuries in the second half… Tennessee made the decision to play a soft zone to contain richardsons legs….. the approach worked bc we were up by 17 in the second half although we almost blew it
