Vacation / Travel

If you are an active tourist (enjoy walking, bicycling, or riding a Scooter) and Spain is a destination on your to do list, I highly recommend Cumbrestravel. There performance on my recent bicycle Camino trip was first rate.

Ulysses, how was your trip to the Tetons? And did weather conditions allow you to traverse the Beartooth Highway?

Well..a big storm dropped about 10 inches of heavy snow on the mountains the night before we got to Jackson Hole, but it had started warming up pretty well by the time we got to Colter Bay Saturday afternoon.

Sunday was absolutely beautiful, we got in Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point, and then the String and Leigh lake hike and the Moose visitor center, but my son hurt his ankle scrambling up some rocks, and my daughter in-laws rheumatoid arthritis decided to buy her full blast that night....Soooo.

My whole Phelps lake hike plan (one of those bucket list things that I didn't get to do last trip in 2011 because the weather turned bad)for Monday got threw out the window, the weather was nice, but it started clouding up and getting a little cooler as the day went on. We went to Oxbow Bend at sunrise and got some great pictures, and then to Mormon row and Antelope flats (zero animals seen) and drove out to Slide lake while we were out there, then we went to Kelly and got a sandwich, then as we were driving by the Gros Ventre campground we saw some moose in the distance so went drove over into the campground and saw four cows and a huge Bull just hanging out...that was cool. Then we drove over to the Menors ferry district and walked around and saw everything there, and then we drove down Moose-wilson to Teton Village and rode the Jackson Hole tram up to Rendevous peak. After that we drove back up M-W road and along the way we saw three black bear and three more Moose. It was dark by the time we got back to the cabin.

That night it rained really hard all night, then turned to snow during the night. It cleared off a little Tuesday but not enough to really do anything till later in the morning. We drove up M-W again and the kids wanted to do some shopping in Jackson before we had to leave to drive to the Henry's lake cabin. I saw where the weather was about to go really bad, so we needed to leave by 3:30 to make sure we got up there before dark. We got just a little past Ashton Idaho and drove through a thunder snow that dropped 3-4 inches of really heavy wet snow on us in about 15 minutes. It was amazing, but a little hair raising. After we got north of that band of thunderstorm cells, it got better. We got to the check in about 7:00.

The weather went to total crap that night, and stayed horrible the next three days, all the roads in Yellowstone besides the section of the Grand loop from Norris to Old Faithful were closed every morning till they were able to get the roads clear. It was of course still amazing, but the whole plan was wrecked by the snow, it made negotiating the boardwalks extremely tough and slow going. I couldn't go to Cody because they could only get the east entrance road open a few hours each day. The last day (Friday) my son really wanted to go to Mammoth so we drove over to Canyon and waited till they got Dunraven Pass cleared, it was about 2:30 when they opened it..that was awesome. There was about two feet of fresh snow up there. By the time we got around to Mammoth and walked around it was getting close to dark, and the rangers told us that they were going to have to close the pass again soon because another heavy snow cell was hitting the pass, so instead of risking getting stuck we drove up to Bozeman and then back down to Henry's lake.

All in all it was a beautiful experience, but there were soooo many things I have always wanted to do, that I still didn't get to do because of the dang freak weather system including the Beartooth, I don't think I will ever be able to go back there again unless something changes in my financial and health situations...so in that sense I was really disappointed, but I am blessed that I got to go at all, there are many that never do. It was soooo beautiful of course, it always is. 😎

How was the fall foliage? Was the snow accompanied by enough wind to strip the aspen before they had reached peak color?

It was just starting to change in random spots, like the cottonwoods along the river closer to Jackson were really changing fast by the time we left. There was almost no wind, just a lot of on and off snow. The trees were still full of leaves and the small young Aspen were mostly turned light green to yellow, while the larger mature Aspen were light green to faint yellow. It was weird to me as we drove out Hoback Canyon to Rock Springs to meet the interstate that the farther south we went, the more the Aspen were in color. Like along the interstate between Laramie and Cheyenne they were poppin pretty good. That was really strange. The greater Yellowstone area had seen no rain in over a month, and temps in the 80s almost everyday for weeks, till the week we went, from what I've seen on the webcams the colors are in full go now. The weather turned great the day we left, till just the last few few days they have had more snow. If I had been a week later, I would have had perfect weather instead of getting crapped out...it was still awesome.

The condition of foliage that you reported is about what I would have predicted, based simply on the timing of your visit. Peak color is accelerated by a series of overnight temperatures that are very cool but do not approach killing-frost levels.

In 2007, 48 hours made an incredible difference in the color of aspen along the Peak-to-Peak Highway in Colorado. A snowstorm in the higher elevations of Rocky Mountain National Park made it impossible to cross the Trail Ridge Road, so we had to retrace our path south via the Peak-to-Peak Highway and then travel west on I-70. The second time along that road would have been around the 22nd or 23rd of September, and it marked the closest to true peak color conditions that we witnessed anywhere on the trip.

Can anybody tell me how to post pics from my G8+ on VN? I wish it was simple like just posting them to FB from your gallery.

Just booked a cruise again. 5 days from Jax to the Bahamas. Less than $650 isn't bad. We love the ocean and just relaxing. Can't wait.

I've never been on a cruise, but that sounds like a great price.

Nice. I love cruising. (especially with the NCL free beverages :) )

We're doing a 7 nighter around the Hawaiian Islands in March after 4 nights on Oahu. We've never been to Hawaii, so we're going nuts trying to make sure we get everything planned.

I’ve been to Oahu. You can see the island in 4 days if you hustle. Relax on your cruise.
Spend a day driving around the entire island. A day snorkeling at Hanauma Bay. A day at Pearl Harbor and a day walking and sitting on Waikiki.

Luau’s are not worth it unless the resort or hotel you stay at has it for free. Dole plantation is nice but tours of a fruit economy on such a beautiful island is crazy to me. Read about it. Sit on North shore and watch some surfing. It’s worth it. Eat at the gio shrimp truck. If you feel at adventurous one day, substitute your day on Waikiki for a hike of the haiku stairs but don’t get caught. You will hurt afterward but it’s a once in a lifetime adventure.

And above all.....have a blast!!’

That sounds amazing. I went to Oahu and Maui when I was 12 and remember how pretty it was. Sounds like a great trip. How does the NCL free beverage thing work? We've just done Carnival now because we're acquiring credits. We do their Cheers package for drinks because it's more economical. My regular drink is Jack on the rocks and a splash of water, I get on the boat and the first thing I get is a Miami Vice or some other frozen concoction. Haha. Those suckers add up at $8 a pop.

I went to Oahu and Maui back when I was 16 or so. What stands out the most in my memory about Oahu is that Pearl Harbor was somber but absolutely worth seeing, the north shore is gorgeous, and Waikiki was way too crowded for my tastes.

Thanks for the tips. We're staying at Ko Olina and plan on a day around Pearl Harbor, a day on the north shore for a shark dive and a surf lesson. Also have to make the wife happy with a quick trip to Dole. This trip was planned for my daughter who's graduating Law school next month. (at least that's my story :whistling: )

On most NCL trips (no open bar in Hawaii unfortunately) you have your option of free perks for your cruise. It looks like they are currently offering 5. Open Bar, Free specialty dining, free wifi, free shore excursions and friends and family sail free.

Link

Also, if you like NCL and their destinations and think you want to travel with them again, you can purchase future cruise vouchers while onboard and get a credit on your current cruise.

Thanks for the link. We need to expand our horizons a bit when it comes to cruising. That looks very nice.

Did not know about this thread...

Did my Camino with a group of SE US bicycle riders this past September - from Leon to Santiago de Compestella, Spain. Rode ~50km per day. The land is beautiful, the people friendly, the food fabulous. Pilgrims along the route from everywhere. Enjoyed the company of Polish riders for three days and a pair of Australians for two. Met some fellow American riders as well. The terrain is hilly to mountainous - challenging riding. Overall, the route was rated a 3 for cross-terrain riding (some off-road, some paved).
Our guide and support driver were excellent - Home | CumbresTravel.

Yes. Walk the way, starting in France at the border. I suppose I could do that after I retire, but biking the trail from Leon was awesome. I'm glad I didn't wait. Buen Camino!

Does anyone have any recommendations regarding Alaska cruises? My family and another family are planning to travel together there next summer. Our children range in age from 10-14, 4 adults, 4 kids.
Thanks.

My wife and I did the shark cage diving on north shore!

North Shore Shark Adventures | Premier Shark Tours on Oahu

They were the best ever. Very informative! Ask all the questions because it was a bucket list thing for me. Take Dramamine if you are sensitive as north shore has swells 2 miles
out that can roll at 30’ tall. I love the waves but others on our trip didn’t!🤢🤮

If you have not seen it, there his really good movie called "The Way" starting Martin Sheen. I wish I could do it, but it is never going to happen for me, my knees are so bad I can barely walk a few hundred yards now.
