Vacation / Travel

What resort are you at? I have always wanted to stay at Anse Chastanet that overlooks the Pitons. It looks so gorgeous. But it's like $500-$1000 a night or some thing like that last I looked. Plus airfare was outrageous last I looked as well. The hole trip would have been like $7000, and that's a little too rich for my taste.

I did Anse for my first marriage honeymoon in 2002. Absolutely stunning. It is next to an old abandoned sugarcane plantation. We took a tour, lots of bad things happened over there, probably lots of ghosts.

I love Piton beer. Wish it was available here.

Was this place all-inclusive? $1200 for the week isn't bad at all. And how much were plane tickets?
No, it's basically just an AirBnB. We booked a Friday to Friday instead of Saturday to Saturday to save on the plane tickets and got them for ~$600 each direct from Charlotte.

All told, with golf and everything, I'm guessing wife and I will spend about $5k.

EDIT: but we are traveling with friends for their 40th birthdays so they are going a little extra on some things. As an example of how we usually travel my wife and I did three weeks all over Japan for less than $10k including flights.

We are heading to Winter Park, CO / Grand Lake area and going to visit Rocky Mountain National Park. Does anyone have recommendations on trails, restaurants, activities for families with pre-teens out there?

Heading to Maine end of July. Spending time in Camden, Bar Harbor and Boothbay. Any recommendations welcome.

we stayed in Rockland which is near Camden...we did a lot of lighthouse touring up and down the coast. Also, went out on a lobster fishing boat which was actually a lot of fun because there are plenty of seals and such to see as well. Hiked quite a bit in Arcadia NP and Cadillac mountain. Bar Harbor was super...saw 5 UT families there including one who ran a small tourist shop there.
Visited Portland and liked it pretty well.
As others have said, lobster, seafood and blueberries.
One of the most fun things we stumbled across was a small bowling alley on our last night there between Camden and Rockland. We dropped in to check it out and ended up spending most of the evening there. It is bowling that is unique to that area. The bowling alley decor and equipment was like travelling back to the 1950's. The bowling pins are shaped like candlesticks. The bowling ball is about the size of a softball and only weighs about 2 pounds. The downed pins are not swept away by the machine before your next attempt. It was more fun bowling than I have ever had otherwise. A lot to be said for handling a 2 versus 15 pound ball. And we happened to hit it on league night so we got to see firsthand how it is supposed to be done.
We really appreciated that you didn't see a lot of chain restaurants and stores. I think there may be ordinances in some of the towns that prohibit chains to keep from displacing local ownership.
Can't wait to go back.

one thing we liked about RMNP was that they employed a shuttle system that goes to many trailheads where you can get off and hike. When you are done with that one you can get back on the shuttle and go to the next one and so on. Every trailhead has a shuttle come by every 15 minutes. It's a great way to see it.
Our kids were 11 and 12 at the time and loved it. They were mostly well established walking trails.
You park at the visitors center(s) and board the shuttles there.

Check out Camden Hills state park nice view of Penobscot Bay in Camden. Also best lobster i have found there is a little hole in the wall on the water place called the Lobster Pound on highway 1 north of Camden a few miles.

When you get to the RMNP take Old Fall River rd to the Alpine visitors center and pick up Trail Ridge rd there. Leave through the west entrance at grand lake to get on I70 and go through Berthoud Pass.

Need some recommendations on where to go next year for 7-10 days. Our daughter will be 3 by that time. I will have over 100k in United+ miles to use towards the trip by then. Looking to spend less than $1k total on lodging and rentals after we use our miles.

Where are you? Which airport?

RMNP is awesome, didn't spend much time there as far as trails/restaurants and such. There was a great to-go breakfast place called Scratch.

I thought Grand Lake was a slightly nicer, slightly less-hokey Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg.

Beach, sesame place, PA , national park, Gatlinburg. Stay close to home and acumulate more miles.
4, 5 year old has a better memory of the best places.

Live in Chatt. Can fly out of either Atl or Nash, but would prefer Nash since my sis lives there and I can avoid paying for hotel/long term parking.

A 3 year old will have a good time at anyplace with a pool. At that age, my wife and I made a couple of trips to S. Florida area (Boca Raton), renting small 2 bedroom condos off of the beach. Didn't need a rental car, we could walk to the beach, or play in the condo pool.

Going to Cincinnati next weekend to watch the Reds. My wife and I thought about going to President William Howard Taft’s National Historical Site. Anyone been there?

Bathtub Beach in Stuart, FL is amazing for kids. The reef just offshore creates a shallow lagoon for kids to enjoy.

It is hands down my little one's favorite beach. Be aware that you will see sharks though, the link below glosses over that fact. Usually the lifeguards are whistling people out of the open area. Once they go home, it's a free for all.

I have never seen a shark make it into the lagoon area for what it's worth.

Great trip up to the Oregon coast (will share some photos when I get back east) but it is absolutely insane that there is nowhere to get a drink or anything at PDX for nighttime flights.

Never heard of it before. Let me know how it is. Over the Rhine is nearby. Used to be the slums but is now full of bars and restaurants. If you’re into beer check out the Rhinegeist Brewery

So Maine was beyond amazing. I was expecting it to be pretty but it wound up being stunning. So many little villages on the coast, every one immaculate. Like walking onto a movie set. I loved all the countless coves and bays. Camden was beautiful especially the Camden Hills hike to where you could look down at the town and ocean below. Bar Harbor was full of tourists but just a gorgeous little town. Acadia is one of the best national parks Ive been to. Beehive trail and Sand Beach were a lot of fun but you have to get there early. We finished off in Southport by Boothbay Harbor. Maybe my favorite area of all. Not as touristy but so much to see and do. I would recommend botanical gardens there. Overall I was floored by Maine and I will return.
