From what I saw in the Curling match last night it looks like a standard strategy is to get one in "the house" then build a blocking wall to limit the opponents ability to get deeper in the house and or to get on top of yours or knock yours out. The opponent should continue to knock down the wall - particularly if they have the "hammer" or last throw. Twice last night the US had the hammer and the guy needed to draw one in closer than the Swiss player (they do this with about 70-80% accuracy and he missed both times. Apparently he did the same thing the night before against Norway.
The Swiss used the above strategy twice in a row and made a great throw on their last stone to get in the house around the wall.
