Vanderbilt Vs. Tennessee, A Rivalry Refused

Are Vandy and Tennessee rivals? Is it really a rivalry?

What, actually, denotes a rivalry? Must both sides be continually competitive?

A good read. Nothing groundbreaking, but offseason discussion fodder if nothing else.

Look at Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The Browns continue to suck but wow things can get nasty when those 2 meet. A lot of fights.

A rivalry is a rivalry to different people. Its a bigger rivalry game to Vandy than to us, but it's instate and they play every year and both hate each other.

You could make a case every SEC East team is a rivalry. If 2 teams hate each other and their games vs each other are always meaningful I think it clasifies as a rivalry.

4 wins in 35 years (my lifetime) doesn't equal a rivalry to me. Franklin has used this to his advantage during the one of the worst periods in UT history.

it is a rivalry whether anyone likes it or not

It just so happens, the past 4 years have been their best in 100 years

Tennessee is Vanderbilt's biggest rival, whether we reciprocate or not.

Just like we view Florida as a big time rival, we don't crack their top 3.

It's a rivalry. If them beating us once every ten years gets under our skins like this does, it's a rivalry. I'm just glad we're on this end of it.

Think about it. If we beat Florida and Bama and Georgia next season and then LOST to Vandy- we'd be pretty dissappointed in our team, at least for that game. (Yeah, we'd be thrilled with the season, but still upset we lost to Vandy) Because we EXPECT to win the game year in and year out, and normally do, it is even more PAINFUL to lose to them. But just because they are rivals does not make their program equal to ours!

Vandy was our first loss ever at Neyland Stadium. Will always be a rivalry.

More of a nuisance than a rivalry. They're by and large classless too in their "winning" period, though I have to take a step back and realize they can't "act like they've been there before" because they never have. Let them enjoy it while they can. In a few short years, the Vandy apparel will diminish in the Mid TN area and orange will flourish again.

I tend to agree with this. Rivalry seems to be a pretty subjective term.

In the last 20 years, we have beaten Florida one more time than Vandy has beaten us. I'm old enough to where that seems shocking, but there are sophomores in college that have never considered UT-FL a rivalry.

Exactly. We're Florida's Vanderbilt. The only difference is we're both typically ranked teams chasing the SEC east title. Vandy will never win the east.
