Vanderbilt Vs. Tennessee, A Rivalry Refused

I like the way you just happened to incorporate the best period in the history of UT basketball (i.e. the Pearl years). Pretty slick there. If that's how this is played, perhaps Vandy fans should just consider the Franklin years when making the football comparison?

What difference does any of this make??? I surely hope y'all got more to puff your chests about than what college team you cheer for?????? I will never understand how any of us can get all high and mighty about the on-field/on-court exploits of 18-23 year old kids, most of whom wouldn't even recognize us on the street. But whatever - carry on if that's what you need to make you feel good about yourselves.

Happy Holidays!

Do you understand the concept of a college message board dedicated to University of Tennessee athletics? I see a Vandy puke talking trash on my team's website and I'm obliged to respond with facts.

As far as UT Basketball is concerned, I could've gone back into the Jerry Green years, 1997-2001 when UT was 89-36, won a SEC regular season title, an SEC East division title, and made 4 NCAA tourney appearances. Perhaps you'd like me to reference the Don Devoe or Ray Mears eras?

If you'd read my post, you'd have seen that I applied the "since 2000" timeframe to both basketball AND football. It certainly wasn't convenient to stop at 2000 regarding UT football given that UT was the most successful football program in the country during the 90's and 2000 to 2013 has hardly been a "heyday" for UT.

I get on this site frequently because I love my alma mater, I enjoy the back and forth debates with fellow UT fans and I enjoy getting quick, up to date information on the football program and recruiting. It certainly isn't so I can get on here and respond to some Vandy puke who oughtta get his sorry arse back onto to a Vandy site, if such a thing exists.

Merry Christmas!

General Neyland and the Vols vs Vandy's Commodore's = instate Army/Navy game.

The best I could come up with

Btw, Pearl was not UTs basketball coach from 2000 to present.... just for 6 of those 13 years. And his era isn't considered the most successful period in UT Basketball history. Ray Mears' era is ...

Finally, if you'd like to put forth the vast, rich history that is the James Franklin era in Vanderbilt football lore, go right ahead. Hang your hat on that great year and a half..... you guys are not only arrogant as hell, you're delusional too.

Then say that, you didn't. You wanted to mention 1 accomplishment in bball and, IMHO, vaguely reference your football success the last 2 years. Be honest.

And I don't like vanderbilt. I'm also not too crazy about posters who dishonestly claim to "be a fan of all teams in the state of Tennessee" but then do nothing but talk crap about Vandy on a UT website, especially when you got virtually nothing to talk crap about. If you wanna crow about getting to 8 wins go ahead. 8 win seasons typically get real SEC coaches at SEC Contending teams fired

The unbelievable arrogance of Vandy fans who talk smack like they're playing for a Natty after doing no better than finishing in the middle of the SEC East after being arguably the worst football program in our nation's history for nearly 100 years is ridiculous. I've honestly never even much considered that Vandy existed until hearing all the arrogance and condescension coming out of West End the last couple of years. Vandy's fans and their classless, arrogant, petulant coach are the only reasons I even respond to anything vanderbilt. I never understood why Coach Cafego despised Vandy like he did..... until now.

KBVol, this is just for you. In his own words, George Cafego explained, in a conversation "among Cafego, Peyton Manning and Andy Kozar that took place Nov. 12, 1997," the roots of his contempt for Vanderbilt. This was the final extensive interview of Cafego before his death:

Manning: You have a reputation for disliking or as it's put, "hating" Vanderbilt's football teams. Is it so and is it as serious a feeling as you've been quoted as saying?

Cafego: Well, two or three things. First thing, as football players, Neyland taught us to develop a dislike for the Alabama football team. Once we found out that Alabama's teams were just good football teams we realized we would have to do more than just play football against Alabama. You've got to get emotionally upset about them - dislike or "hate" them. And, the same came to be applied to Vanderbilt. But then with Vanderbilt players, something happened when some of our players worked on the TVA projects. Neyland would get UT players jobs on the river, and Vanderbilt players were also working on the same projects. University officials allowed that kind of work during the summers, to help kids make money. Bowden Wyatt [then a Vol end] worked there with other Vols. I don't remember who all. They got into a fight with Vanderbilt [players]. They just didn't like each other. Then later, I saw Vanderbilt teams come to play at UT, while I was coaching at UT, and the captains met at the center of the field at the UT logo. One of Vanderbilt's captains, in disrespect, spit several times on the UT Logo and rubbed it in with his shoe. That made me so angry. And, as a result, I wanted to "whip" our team for not busting the spitter in the nose, then and there. God, I couldn't stand that. This only made me dislike Vandy more. Then another time Vandy came to play at UT, one of their players ran through the" T" while our team was running through the "T," to mock our tradition. At the same game, a Vanderbilt player carelessly ran into a UT cheerleader shouting through a megaphone and injured her. It was these and other incidents that added to my dislike for the Vanderbilt players" (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...nYGICA&usg=AFQjCNGg8RaJ_JJFg1vXlT4c19zNJ5kZ5g).

In over 100 years of Vol basketball, the men have made it to the final 8 a grand total of once - that was under Pearl. imho, his 6 years was the most successful period in UT men's basketball history.

Well there you go. Thanks for sharing that Rex.

I have respect for teams that have something to crow about... Bama, Florida, Georgia, Auburn.... Programs that have won championships, that win week in week out. They've backed it up. They've done it.... their accomplishments are something to squawk about.

Vandy's done Shiite to be beating their chest the way they do. Reading that story on Cafego, it looks like some things just never change.

There's been disrespect on both sides. Vandy fans having drinks thrown on them at the game. Dooley's remarks after the game. The FU Franklin chants. Plenty of disrespect to go around.

News flash: If you are looking for respect pertaining to Vandy's football program, you're in the wrong place.
