Vanderbilt Vs. Tennessee, A Rivalry Refused

What about Florida?

Apparently we hate losing to Vandy more than UF.

TBH, I don't really get the obsession the site has with Vandy/Franklin but the question of what makes a rival is an interesting one. I can remember many Vandy games at Neyland that were brawls -- often the meanest dirtiest games of the year. Vanderbilt always got up for our game and they did so long before Franklin and will do so long after he's gone. Maybe because historically it's been the last game, maybe because we're in-state, I don't know but I do know what I've seen from them.

UA and UF are our rivals, imo. But the Vandy game will always be special for many reasons whether it turns into a balanced rivalry or not.

Unfortunately no. If so, the rivalry is one-way... UT considers Florida a rival. Does Fla consider UT a rivalry game right now?....not so much

Florida=hammer
UT=nail

4 wins in 35 years (my lifetime) doesn't equal a rivalry to me. Franklin has used this to his advantage during the one of the worst periods in UT history.

DaphneVol - I completely agree in the long-term. However, I think looking at the competition between two teams on a 4-year moving average is much more telling. Right now, the UT/Vandy game has been a 50/50 toss up in the last four years. Unfortunately, using that same logic puts us in the bottom-feeder category when compared to Bama & Florida.

There's no where to go from here but up.

Our hypocrisy knows no bounds.

it is a rivalry whether anyone likes it or not

It just so happens, the past 4 years have been their best in 100 years

That's not completely true. Vanderbilt was a powerhouse in college football's early years. They declined gradually, falling off a bit in the 30's and 40's. By around the early 60's, they consistently sucked.

So more like past 50 years.

More of a nuisance than a rivalry. They're by and large classless too in their "winning" period, though I have to take a step back and realize they can't "act like they've been there before" because they never have. Let them enjoy it while they can. In a few short years, the Vandy apparel will diminish in the Mid TN area and orange will flourish again.

Do all 12 of their fans live in your neighborhood? Lol. Vandy stuff is rare down here in Southern Middle Tennessee. I think ive seen 5 Vandy fans at the most down this way.

Not you.
The people who consider Florida a rival but refuse to accept Vandy as one.

I kinda fall in that camp admittedly. I've never considered Vandy a rival simply because until 2 years ago they were an automatic win. Kinda like we are for Florida right now. IMO, rivalries can go one way...eg, we definitely consider Florida a rivalry game but I doubt they do us right now....we've been an easy win the majority of the time for 25 yrs.

There's a pretty good bit of Bama stuff down this way, in Winchester (surprisingly) and Fayetteville primarily. I live one county up from the bordering counties and there's a little bit of a mix, not much, still mostly UT. Id say it's 85% UT, 10% Bama, and the other 5% are mixed in here in Coffee County. The company i work for has mostly UT fans. Out of about 60 employees, we have 3 Bammers, one Auburn fan, one Georgia fan, and the rest are UT, so im pretty happy with that.

I'm right there with you.
I'm old school. Vandy and Kentucky are supposed to be automatic wins.

I live in Hardin County. I would say its 50/50 at best here. For those that don't know, I am in the county just north of the bama boarder.

Yep. Also home to one of the most underrated country singers imo, Darryl Worley.

The song "Sounds like life to me" pisses me off so bad.....If I was having as rough a stretch as the guy in that songs having and Darryl Worley looked at me and said "Sounds like life to me." I'd beat him to death with a pillow case full of batteries.
