Violent racism alive and well in the South

Its interesting that the right would simply assume -- with the actual facts pointing to the contrary -- that because five black men raped and killed a white woman that it was motivated by race.

Ironic this post is. . .

I feel like most Americans that 'hate' France simply like making jokes about them trembling at the sight of Germans.

I haven't been to France, but I know many people that have. Seems like the French look down on Americans more than the other way around.

That would be naive. They 'dislike' us as a generalized population because of the perceived selfish way we have behaved historically.

I know people like to make jokes about them surrendering - but they've been invaded by the germans how many times? Warring on your own soil so many times in such a short period of time would have an adverse effect on my psyche, imo.

I haven't been to France either but I've heard it's worse in places like Paris as opposed to the rural areas. This was reported to me some years ago though so I'm not sure about today.

I have a close friend that says she and her husband were literally spat at waiting for a train in or around Paris. Granted such a thing can obviously be an isolated incident outside the "norm" but it shocked them nevertheless that merely being an American would elicit such a response.

That's one thing, but it doesn't seem like they're a big fan of our tourists, either.

I don't blame them in that respect. Many of our 'tourists' are horrified when the french people won't cater to them in English. My parents have terrific stories about other tourists in southern France.

The French don't like Americans because they are very protective of their culture, which is one of the reasons they don't like speaking English to help a tourist even if they know English.

American pop culture has influenced people around the world and the French like being French and don't want their culture "americanized".

so, things like Euro Disney piss them off something fierce.

That would be correct. Paris would be the biggest culprit. I wouldn't say we are above them as a whole though. I would put our white trash up against any ignorant populace on earth.

True also. French Canadians are just as bad. They now have a provincial 'secret police' whos sole job is to find businesses i QC who offer more English then French - they are then sued or closed.

I've never had any issues in Quebec with English, or rudeness as a result of my being an American.

did you avoid everywhere except Montreal?

I went to Montreal for half a day when I was 18. Been 8 or 9 times since, never had any issue. I have more issues with CT plates from people in Bum**** than I've ever had in Quebec.

No chance, IMO. I follow enough world soccer to know that the way blacks are treated in some places is way beyond our white trash.

I guess. I don't want to say some racism is worse than others though.

Algerians are treated like shiii in France - if that's what you're referring to.

Montreal is easily the nicest city in QC. There was a great enough percentage of QCers that wanted to secede from Canada that they had a separatist party and two referendums. Ridiculous.

I was actually referring to Italian soccer. It upsets me because I've been to Italy and really do like the country.

But they have some extremely backwards people there.

I like Quebec City, but farther downstream is preferable. Cities dont do much for me vacation wise.

We all have our people that we'd like to hide during the olympics. I remember the one kid on the US men's swimming relay who called the French team "frenchies"... I literally facepalmed.

Depending on what your interests are...Montreal has some of the best strip clubs in the Continent. The Skiing is pretty good near the Ontario border as well. Maybe fishing, but I'm not familiar with the lakes/St lawrence fishing.

French canadians don't mind answering in English, just don't make them stop speaking French in their own province.

We just explore, do some cross country hiking and camping, heck things out, generally. Lots of hidden stuff from the colonial wars and such.

Always good trips for us.

Oh believe me, no one is asking them to. There is legislation disallowing English on billboards/signs. French must be bigger then english writing, must be ahead of/on top of english - its pretty ridiculous.

That's not so great, but I'm talking about the fans that boo their own black players and call them monkeys.

You check out the battle of the plains of abraham site? I thought it was interesting. Canadian history isn't exactly riveting.
