Bettencourt pitched 6 innings allowing 7 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB and 5K's, picking up the win for the Miners. Simcox is lighting it up, he went 2 for 4 last night with 5 RBI's. Stewart went 2 for 4 as well, with a walk and a strike out.

Jonathon Youngblood had 2 hits in 3 at bats, 1 a dbl, for the Steam in his last game. He's batting .143

It's getting very close to the end of summer ball and all the players will be back on campus, most already are. The Miners and SLO Blues are in the mix for league play-offs. The Miners are up a game, the Blues are down a game.

12 or 13 guys still competing seems pretty good. GBO!

The Official Site of the San Luis Obispo Blues - 2011 & 2012 CCL Champions

Andrew Lee was 4 for 4 with a double and four RBI for the San Luis Obispo Blues baseball team as they defeated the visiting Los Angeles Brewers 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.

Lee broke open the game in the second inning with a two RBI double to put the Blues ahead 2-0.

Blues closer Drake Owenby held the Brewers to one run in the ninth inning and the Blues won the game 7-6.

Lee has really improved at the plate this summer. In 75 at bats for the Vols this past season, Lee's BA was .187. In 116 at bats for the Blues he's batting .259.

Heath Loyd played yesterday and went to 2 for 2 at the plate. However, he's still batting at .200.

A look at the numbers - Matt Esparza

Overall, Esparza appeared in eight games for the Volunteers starting three of those eight with a 1-1 record. In his 13.2 innings pitched, he had three strikeouts with 11 walks giving up 13 runs.

I've watched Esparza pitch several times this summer. I was impressed with his toughness, a trait that was not really on display for the Vols. He didn't seem to have it on a consistent basis, but he did show it on more than one occasion.

There are a couple of good things the Northwoods League has over the others, including the Cape Cod. The NW's games are shown live on Youtube, multi camera affairs, best of all the leagues. More importantly, they are the only league I watched or listened to where the announcers have a radar gun. I feel confident in saying Esparza's top end is mid eighties topping out around 85 mph. He consistently throws in the lower 81- 83 range. He relies on having good placement and a mean change up.

Keeping in mind what he did for the Vols, posted above, let's look at his numbers this summer. He's had 9 starts, pitching 52 innings, both team highs for the Green Bay Bullfrogs. To me, this says a lot about the faith the coaching staff has in him. In those 9 starts he's had one terrible outing where he gave up 7 ER on 9 hits with no walks and 4 K's.

In 6 of the remaining 8 starts he's given up 2 ER or less. He gave up 3 and 4 ER in the other two contests.

In the 13.2 Innings he pitched for UT, he gave up 11 walks, while striking out 3. That's not a very good BB/SO ratio. For the Bullfrogs that ratio is a remarkable 14 walks to 43 strike outs, spread across 52 innings. In 5 of the 9 games he gave up 1 or less BB, never giving up more than 3 in any game, which he did 3 times.

The 7 run game was the midpoint of the season and shot his ERA up to 5.26, but he's actually been better and more consistent since that outing and his ERA is back down to 3.63 over his past four starts going 7 innings twice and 6.1 and 6 innings. In those 4 games, 26.1 innings, he gave 1 ER per game in two contests and 2 ER in the other two contests. Over that span he has given up 6 walks/ 20 SO.

He finished his debut season with the Vols with an 8.56 ERA, third worst on the team and he's at 3.63 right now for the Bullfrogs.

A real glaring negative stat for Esparza during his frosh season was that he gave up 4 HR's in the 13 innings he pitched for the Vols. He's only given up 5 in nearly 5 times as many innings.

The big question is the level of competition he's facing this summer versus the SEC. It may not be the SEC, but the Northwoods League has more teams, more fans and for some perspective, VJax is batting .259 in the same league, down from .290 (UT), putting him at 10th in BA ON HIS OWN TEAM. In other words, he's a stud for UT, and he can barely get in the line up for the Rox.

Esparza has shown vast improvement over the summer, whether he can bring it home and be effective for us is the question. Hopefully the confidence he's earned and the toughness he displayed at times will come back to Vol Nation.

GBO!

Did Saberhagen shoot roids? Just kidding... But for real, he's had a nice summer. Owenby has been absolutely dominant.

Yep, I've got to watch Dalton several times for the Oaks, usually when he pitched against the Blues, who lead the league in team BA. He's been on the Oaks the last two seasons, maybe three. He has a rapport with the coach there that seems missing between he and CDS. He's the number one guy on the Oaks staff and they are one of the best CCL teams. It's hard to explain.

I'm hoping he'll get to start vs. the Blues on Friday, but he may get the call sooner, possibly today.

Easy to be impressed with Owenby, but I'm equally impressed by Martin and Bettencourt, both have a larger body of work to judge. I'll be doing rundowns like the one for Esparza over the course of the week.

Thanks for all the info this summer. I look forward to your post. Hopefully this summer will give some of these players confidence and it shows next spring.

A look at the numbers - Catcher Position

Which of the Vols' catchers led the team in slugging percentage (.605), tied for first for most doubles (10) and home runs (3)? He also had the third best BA on the team at .321. He also led the team in OB% (.450)...the answer is....If you guessed Ethan Bennett you are right.

That's a lot of plate production to lose. Who will step up and fill that role?

David Houser

Houser got the most starts of any catcher including Bennett. He struck out 40 times, second only to Taylor Smarts' 47, the difference being Houser had 115 at bats, Smart had 172. His batting average at the end of it all was a paltry .191, 69 points lower than any other player with 100 or more at bats.

So...how has summer ball turned out for Houser? I'm afraid, at the plate anyway, not much progress has been made. He's currently batting .188, he's had 13 hits, 1 double in 69 at bats for the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League. He's struck out 20 times, while only drawing 7 walks. His at bats are keeping him out of the line up as the other catcher Dylan Kelly is batting .283. He's better than decent defensively and he has a good arm, but he's got to do better at the plate.

Jason Manis

Manis didn't get much of an opportunity last year. He came in as a defensive guy mostly and he only got two starts. He only had 8 AB and ended up at .121. This will be Manis' junior season and so far he's played in 22 games, starting only 5 games in his UT career. There is not much of a resume to judge him at the plate, but we know CDS likes his defensive skills behind it.

So, has Manis made improvement in summer ball? Unfortunately, Manis got a bad draw. He ended up playing in Canada with the Okotok Dawgs of the WMBL. The starting catcher was a local product from Okotok and is currently batting .337 in 101 at bats. There is another catcher who too is hitting over .300 in 72 at bats. Then there is Manis. In 37 at bats, Manis has 6 hits, 6 runs, 7 RBI, 4 BB, 1 HBP and maybe the best number is this: only 5 SO. So, he's making contact in his at bats, he's just not getting on. He's batting .162.

Things don't seem as bleak with the news of...

Tyler Shultz

Shultz is currently with the LA Brewers along with Vol Pierce Bily in the California Collegiate League. He made the CCL All-Star team along with Maddox, Owenby, and Saberhagen. Andrew Lee and Davis Aiken also play(ed) in the CCL this summer.

Anyhoo...Shultz is batting .316 at the moment. In 76 AB, he has 24 H, 7 R, 20 RBI!!!, 7 BB and only 6 SO!!!

If this was football recruiting it would have been met with a BIG FAT BOOOOOOOOM! What was going to be a weakness was addressed rather quietly by CDS.

There is reason for some optimism at the catcher position and hopefully, for Manis and Houser, the light comes on for them at the plate. My recommendation for Houser is to go to Alaska and play for Coach Taylor and the Miners. I've watched almost all of their games and the #1 catcher, Michael Thomas from UK, couldn't hit anything. On June 30th he was batting .189, 17 days later he's at .295. It can happen!

GBO!

Ladies and Gentlemen, starting tonight on the mound for the SLO Blues is Andrew Lee! Through 2 innings he's given up 1 hit, no runs, no walks and 3 K's against the first place Foresters!

Lee's pitch count is 27 heading to top 3, 20 strikes, 7 balls.

Nice, any news on his velo?

Yep, not the greatest quality in the world but better than nothing

Yep, been the story of my summer, better than nothing.:)

That was a huge K right there! He gave up 2 walks, but he kept them from coming across. This is the number 5 team in all of college summer ball according to PG

That's it for Lee, he pitched 5 complete, gave up 1 hit, 2 BB, and 6 K's, 0 Runs. I'm sure he was on a pitch count...he threw 71. His family, from Morristown was there to see him pitch 5 innings of shut out ball! That's pretty cool.

Not surprise that they are ranked that high after looking over their roster, have some good players

Charpie had a rough night. 3 innings of relief, he gave up 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO...his ERA is 5.84.

That's exciting news about lee. I think he could really make a big impact on the mound next spring.
