Vols to add another commit to '15 class? (Joseph Young)

There are scores of kids every year that don't get a single offer from any major universities that end up being phenomenal talents and eventually make NFL rosters. Point being that with all the recruiting services, internet, and social media there are still kids that could have great careers at power 5 schools that slip through the cracks. I don't know if this guy is one of them or not, but right now we don't have enough depth to even have a scout team running back. With only having 3 scholarship true RB's entering fall camp, do you really want AK or JK running scout team day in and day out? Right now it looks like our 3 blue shirts will be running scout team for us this fall which almost guarantees that at least 2, if not all 3 scholarships will be honored. EVERYONE on this board that played college football will understand and probably agree with this.
RB Depth
1A Jalen Hurd
1B Alvin Kamara
3rd string John Kelly Jr
utility man Ralph David Abernathy IV
*no other scholarship RB's (or walk-ons that I can think of)

Don't sleep on a seasoned back like Abernathy. Just saying. One attempt at -5yds is bad azz

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say he is one of the pleasant surprises of fall camp. You know, the kind of surprise that shows up in a blurb of the end of a VQ fall camp article.

From his film He is in a similar offence to what CBJ runs, He seems to cut well and follows his blockers with good patience waiting for holes to open. He doesn't bounce everything outside immediately and initiates contact to gain extra yards at the end of the run. He catches the ball out of the backfield reliably.

Played 2A ball and his team went 11-2 with a young O Line (that had zero players with any major D-1 offers) If he works hard I would bet he will see the field in the first 2 years.

Check his film. I think its a great pickup.

"You know, I'm so happy about this. I stayed humble about the whole situation with my recruitment. I got news that I could attend Tennessee as a blueshirt and I jumped at the opportunity."

"Well it's less stressful now knowing where I'm heading and to have the process over with. I'm just focusing on the weight room and track so I can come in and compete for some playing time hopefully. I'll be working on trying to improve all aspects of my game, strength, speed, and quickness. I'm going up to Knoxville as early as possible."

"It was very tough and difficult for me to break the news to the Charlotte coaches. I said you only live once so I had to take this SEC offer."

I have heard that if a kid doesn't get involved with attending all the camps can effect how they are ranked. This may not be true, but its easy to wonder with how big a business it is these days.

All I want to say.. Welcome to UT!

So, bussey may have flipped to Texas A&M regardless of how this all worked out.

The UT coaches have a backup player in the wings just waiting for the opportunity.

Turn back the clock to a year ago. How excited everyone was about helm Hendrix and Henderson. Everyone was scratching their heads about Moseley.

Moseley started at the cornerback position at the University of Tennessee. He worked hard, really wanted it, and was rewarded. The other three did not get what they wanted and are no longer here.

It will be interesting to see where this goes a year from now.

I would be interested in exactly what was said to Young. Whether it would be an opportunity to blueshirt or if Jones promised him a blueshirt? The first situation would likely depend on how he did and the numbers on the next class. In any case after Robertson last year, I'll trust their evaluation.

I don't know but this blurb in the Charlotte paper didn't really clarify the situation:

Fairfield (S.C.) Central running back Joseph Young, who had given the 49ers a verbal commitment, "flipped" on Charlotte and is now going to Tennessee, according to a 49ers source.

Young will "blueshirt" with the Volunteers – he will to go Knoxville in the fall as a preferred walk-on with a verbal promise of an opportunity to earn a scholarship.

It’s not clear if Young’s decision to pass up a sure thing with Charlotte for a more uncertain situation at Tennessee was because of the Vols’ losing Reid.

They were also in on DJ Jones first before anyone else... And Von

There will always be misses, but they can evaluate

If he has the intangibles, ie; he fits the recruiting profile regarding grades, character etc, he looks like a really good recruit.

From the film he can plant, change directions, and accelerate at the same time. Not all backs can do that. He may be a project, but if he sticks it out I believe he will be very good!

Not true on Henderson. He was redflagged by the clearinghouse after he got here and was not allowed to be on scholarship by the NCAA. That is totally different from quitting.

Not sure why people make accusations that Butch would not honor blue shirt with scholarship when he has honored each one so far. I could see greyshirt skepticism as those don't usually end well anywhere but blueshirt is a bigger deal that you have to follow through on.

I like Butch and I believe he will stick to his word BUT why would he have to follow through on blueshirts?

I think we will follow through though as long as the kid follows through on his end.

Because the kid shows up on campus enrolling as a walk on under impression that he will get a scholarship that next day.
