Vols vs Florida Atlantic? Thoughts?

I think the game is a lot tougher than people are thinking, maybe we blow them out, but there’s a reason Vegas & KenPom and just about every other analytical site has this around 5pts. I see posters talking double digits, saying this is one of the worst teams we’ll have played, folks saying this is a last place SEC team, there’s some major overlooking going on.

Not me, I just want to win. If it's by 1 or by 20 it doesn't matter to me either way, get the W and make the Elite Eight.

Once again, analytics take into account opponent…they just beat a Memphis team that went 3-1 against the SEC and only loss being to Bama.
And I have already said Memphis was their marquee win whereas we have 10+ of those level and higher wins on our resume. They lost to Bama and we beat Bama. They built a season of stats and victories against a relatively weak schedule whereas our numbers were created against one of the tougher schedules. Best I can tell, Kenpom and being in the sweet sixteen are the only things indicating these are closely matched teams. It’s still college basketball where anyone can beat anyone else on a given night. If we place close to our A game they will have to play out of their minds to win. Of course this is only my opinion and our schedules are so drastically different that I can’t believe any of the statistics are truly relative. Go VOLS!

You should go but $5k on Vols alternate line to win by 15+ since you’re so confident

FAU has to hit contested three's all game. They also have to pressure the ball and create a lot of turnovers. Tennessee will control the boards and live in the paint. Unless TN just chucks up 3 after 3 and abandons a half court offense, its a dub. They did beat Florida but their big dude had like 30 points on them. Florida also let them shoot over 50% from 3. The game before that, Ole Miss beat them on the glass, and limited their 3's and they lost. They are barely top 50 in 3 pt % and were one of the best statistically at stopping it. Even if they jgo off, we still have a good chance at winning. Match even a fraction of their 3's and they get boat raced.

Elite 8 is downright terrifying lol. I'll just sleep for that game. It's either Draymond Green and Michigan State Elite 8 flashbacks with Tom mr March Izzo or the best guard in the country who can pull up from the parking lot and drop dimes with his eyes closed. Both are terrible matchups for us to reach the final 4.

I’m very confident we are the more talented team. I know however that the most talented team doesn’t win every game and there’s a chance we don’t win. I don’t believe for a second this is a toss up game and that FAU is a team equal to Kentucky, Bama, Arkansas, Gonzaga, Kansas, Texas, Duke and the other top ranked teams we’ve played. We have to have shooting troubles and they have to be shooting great for them to win. Call me a fool if you like and maybe I’ll be proven wrong but Kenpom isn’t going to change my perception of the FAU squad

They shoot over 37% from 3, Tennessee needs to be the aggressors from the get go and not take FAU lightly. They are a good team, but I think the Vols are finally dialing into their strengths and Santi has served us pretty well at PG. I feel we get to the Elite 8!!

Agree. Not a popular opinion but I don't think Tennessee beats Duke with ZZ running the point. Being able to put a big physical guard on Roach and co threw them off. If he does anything like he had been doing, Tennessee is playing from behind the whole game IMO. Santi has benefited from playing teams that either don't have the depth to constantly press our backcourt or just aren't as physical. FAU should be able to press our guards so Santi needs a lot of help in MSG. Our S&C program deserves a medal because the energy spent breaking those presses and being effective is remarkeable. We totally need that because no way FAU lets our guards walk the ball over the timeline

No one is disputing we are more talented. No one (even that crazy old KenPom) is comparing them to the “top teams” we have played and mostly beaten. What everyone is saying is “don’t sell them short based on their conference and schedule”. They are absolutely at LEAST as good as the mediocre to good teams (think Missouri, Florida, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Colorado and Texas A&M) that we have lost to. Anyone chalking up an automatic win or obsessing over “who we play in the Elite 8” is fooling themselves. We have MORE than enough talent to run them out of the building. They have more than enough to “break our hearts”. You have expressed you think they would be “bottom 3rd of SEC”. That’s your opinion and you are entitled to it. Most of us (and the analytics, including KenPom, NET and Sagarin) disagree. We will all find out Thursday. I sincerely hope we do apply our talent and run them out of the gym. That hasn’t been our MO (especially over the last 4 weeks).

One thing to watch is how does the national narrative affect the officiating in this game. All week we are going to hear about how our game was too physical, more like football, poorly officiated, etc etc. it will not surprise me if we get a ridiculously tightly over officiated game now and that would definitely be advantage them since they are a better shooting team than us. It’s going to be very interesting to see how it plays out.

It will depend on the officials we draw for the game-nothing more, nothing less and nothing else.

FAU's Martin's Antics will play into it as well on the national scene and already has done so.

Nobody cares that Duke got their butts physically dominated. A lot of people could care less about what happened to Duke because of the past calls and benefits they have received in the past. Martin's event will have more affect on officiating than Tennessee's hard nose basketball.

Martin took the target off our heads and put it on FAU. They were jawling the entire game last night. Talking trash...FAU went from a potential giant killer to a Snot nose bully on a playground beating up on a 16 seed.

Look at Izzo of MSU his antics and teams seem to succeed in spite of their ways.

"Tennessee was awesome, looked like a G-League team," added Kenny Smith, a former first-round NBA draft pick. "They looked like real men. Add the comments of Charles Barkley and you got it. This is the reputation you want.

Duke crying their eyes out about the Age of our players and the foul calls. Basketball is a rough sport without the pads to protect you.

The only reason we got extra attention is because it did not fit into the Media's scenario's of Duke making the final 4.

Frankly, THIS is my biggest concern going into the game.

Good post except I don’t think FAU makes the NCAA tournament if their current team played an SEC schedule as I think all the teams you listed above are better except Colorado. JMO

Who said they were? But you don’t think there’s a chance they are better than Colorado, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Missouri, Texas A&M or Florida?

I think it’s downright silly to complain about a basketball team being “too rough.”

Barnes has a system that demands physical defense.

Instead of opposing teams complaining about it, maybe they should spend more time trying to figure out how to stop it.

FAU already made a mistake into thinking they should be treated differently.

You do know that FAU beat Memphis. Memphis beat aTm, Candy, Auburn, Ole Miss, played Houston close twice and beat them in the tournament. They also lost a close 3 pt game to bama. Tells me they're plenty good enough for a 9 seed.

ESPN just reseeded the 16-team field and has Princeton at 15 and FAU at 16. Y’all, we’ve been given a gift and we should beat them easily. In order to advance you’re gonna have to beat some good teams, but count this as about as favorable of a scenario as we could have been given! We got this!

Should beat them easily??? How much NCAA Tournament basketball have you watched? It can't be much. I can see saying we should be favored but even Vegas only has it at 5.5.

Coach Dusty Maye:

I have to pinch myself.

Focused on TN - haven’t processed FDU win yet.

We got guys that love ball. They’re not afraid of the moment. Not afraid of competition. Our guys believe somebody is going to step up.

Figure out ways to win.

We’re only a little bigger than FDU.

Bragging on N Texas. UAB. MTSU.

Thought we over scheduled going in to year.
Can’t get high majors at home.

Blah. Blah. Blah.

Boring coach speak.

Was a student manager at IU for Bobby Knight.

Thought he’d be prepared to be a high school varsity coach.

Boca Raton campus is like a resort.

Gelb threw him softballs.

Australian Rugby comment?
Most physical thing I could think of. It was a joke. I know it rubbed some people the wrong way.

They took a commercial flight to NYC last night. Already there at the Marriott.

Twelve of the 16 have never won a national championship, seven have never been to a Final Four. Florida Atlantic had never won a game in the tournament until last Friday.

It is a Sweet 16 that proves sometimes, the beloved 3-point shot doesn’t mean squat. Princeton shocked Arizona while going 4-for-25 from the 3-point line. Arkansas took out Kansas while hitting only three of 15.

Michigan State dumped Marquette while missing 14 of 16. Kansas State was under 24 percent from out there against Kentucky and Fairleigh Dickinson hit barely 30 percent against Purdue.

“That’s why your defense matters,” Tom Izzo told his Michigan State Spartans when they were clanging 3-point attempts.
