Vols vs Knights in Cotton Bowl? $$$

Food for thought.
The orange bowl picks based on rankings. If the rose passes on Ohio St That doesn’t change the ranking. The orange could still pick Tennessee as the more attractive game vs Clemson.
I don't think so. They must take the highest ranked team left. OSU will be ranked higher than Vols.

Yes and in this senecio the rosé bowl is throwing out the rules too. It’s all about what the orange bowl thinks is best for their bowl. Maybe it’s Ohio st. Maybe not

Just for the heck of it, I suggest the Tennessee Volunteers play the Saint Petersburg Griffins in the Glasnost Bowl. Bypass the corrupted politics of CFP bowl committees altogether. Perhaps even create a precedent for other teams to do something similar until the committee stop the tomfoolery.

With Ohio State trying to get out of the Rose Bowl, which was known by the committee before the final rankings, I honestly believe the CFP committee ranked teams in an attempt to possibly get games it wants that will drive ratings.

Scenerio: #22 UCF defeats #18 Tulane in the AAC Championship game (for a second time this season). UCF gets bumped above Tulane and gets a NY6 Bowl. This invite is to the Cotton Bowl.

The #2 SEC team if not in the playoffs goes to the Sugar Bowl. By ranking Alabama ahead of Tennessee this ensures they get this invite and cannot be bumped. Where does Tennessee go? Orange right? Not so fast.

But, since the Orange can take the highest ranked non playoff team from either the Big10 or SEC, Ohio State has a legitimate chance of getting this invite due to being higher ranked than Tennessee and having a half decent argument as to why not attend the Rose Bowl. Penn State ranked 8th for no known reason really helps out here as it gives the Rose Bowl a similarly ranked Big10 team to take.

Who wants to watch UCF in a Bowl game...yuck...no story line here since they will be 10-3 if they beat Tulane and rarely mentioned nationally throughout the season. Wait a second... there is a storyline that will sell this game. What if UCF has to face their old coach?$$$$

There you have it. Tennessee lost it's main storyline with Hooker going down. But the next best thing and a way to get some free pub for an otherwise non-marketable UCF is to match them up against Tennessee.

Not a soul would care to watch the Knights in a New Years 6 Bowl unless you can create a reason to tune in. Right? Like what have they done this year...crickets...wins over Cincinnati and Tulane while both were ranked is kinda cool I guess.

How does Tennessee benefit? Multiple ways actually. First off they would be the favorite even without Hooker. Secondly the storyline will attract more common fans to watch with some interest that might not have. Heuple gets to prove he is the reason for success at his previous program and his system with SEC talent way surpasses his old players and their current system. Good for recruiting I believe and positive momentum going into 2023.

And there you have it. My theory is that Tennessee was ranked below Alabama just in case UCF defeats Tulane again and because the committee knew in advance that Ohio State was leveraging for the Orange Bowl.

Seriously who would tune in to watch UCF against Penn State?. See what I mean. In the wise words of RZA himself "cash rules everything around me C.R.E.A.M. get that money dolla dolla bills yall".

Sorry way too long but not like there is a game to watch so just read it.

Go Big Orange
Orange bowl doesn’t have to choose the top ranked team from SEC or Big Ten.

Rose Bowl isn't throwing out the rules. They have a special rule that CFP had to agree to. The rule allows Rose Bowl to select a different team if one of the teams have been to Rose Bowl several times in a row. This was allowed by CFP to have Rose Bowl included in CFP. They are the only Bowl that has a special rule. If Ohio State isn't in playoffs and Rose Bowl decides to take Penn State then Orange Bowl has to take Ohio State.

Great analysis. Tennessee is damaged goods without their star qb and is not highly desired by the major bowls at the present time. Just roll with the punches. Heupel vs. Gus would be a decent matchup. Vols still could finish as high as fifth in the final rankings which is outstanding if they win the bowl game.
I agree that we don’t have any control over it as fans, just hope for a sunny bowl and our players show out

Go read the New Year Six contracts. Orange Bowl must take ACC champion if they aren't in playoffs. They then must take the highest ranked team left out of SEC/Big10/ ND.
That’s not the contract. They have the choice of Big Ten/SEC/ND. It didn’t have to be the highest ranked of either conference

"The ACC team's opponent in a given year will be the highest-ranked available team from the SEC, Big Ten, and Notre Dame, subject to several constraints: the SEC and Big Ten champions are always excluded, and when an SEC and/or Big Ten team qualifies for the College Football Playoff, the next available team would also be excluded from participating in the Orange Bowl due to contractual obligations with the Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl, respectively. Also, should a highest-ranked team create a rematch with the ACC team, the Orange Bowl has the option of passing over that team for the next-highest ranked team among the Big Ten, SEC, and Notre Dame, again subject to the noted constraints. Rankings are based on the College Football Playoff committee's rankings."
Straight from the CFP agreement.

I have little doubt that the committee manipulates the rankings, especially beyond the four playoff teams, to fit certain bowl scenarios. But the Heupel-UCF thing might mean something to some UCF fans, but to anyone else in the country, including the UT fan base? As you put it ..... crickets.

Penn State being ranked #8 and potentially getting the Rose Bowl is the biggest travesty of this whole thing. For me, they could do away with the bowls entirely at this point and just give teams that earned the status the three weeks of practice.

I'd take UCF in the Cotton Bowl. They have a more recent National Championship than we do. Be thankful Vol patriots.

I have no idea how binding these agreements are, but it wouldn’t seem realistic that the orange bowl could be forced to take Ohio State if they wanted someone else. If Ohio State refuses the rose bowl, why can’t they be bumped down to a lesser bowl?

Not sure why errbody thinks the rosé bowl has all this power. They just tried a power play and they caved to the playoffs.

Who tunes in to Bowl game except the bored and lonely, that group will tune in no matter what.
When you use the term Not so fast, I assume you're a big Lee Corso fan a credibility issue IMO.
sans the playoffs you just have casual drive by fans nothing to play for, it's getting worse by the year

People keep talking about UT being damaged goods because Hooker won't play. I doubt that C. J. Stroud would play in an Orange Bowl against Clemson. If he opts out, wouldn't Ohio State be damaged goods too? By the rules, the Orange Bowl should take Ohio State if they are available but my guess is that the Orange Bowl isn't that worried about 'rules' - I doubt they would be sued by the CFP. So, if I'm Mike White, I'm calling the Orange Bowl and telling them that they can be assured that Tennessee will bring at least 40,000 fans to Miami.

Lord I hope that doesn’t happen. Nobody cares about UCF or Tulane except folks who went there. Nothing would surprise me though about anything the playoff committee or these POS bowls will do. We’re probably screwed.

We are not screwed because nobody thought we would be where we are at the beginning of the year. We are not higher because we got our ass handed to us by a mediocre USCe. No team survives that kind of beat down intact. Be glad we are in a New Years bowl regardless of who we are playing. We will get a lot of exposure. Big steppingstone into next year. Watch and enjoy it for what it is.
