Yep. Anyone who thinks the ucf vs heupel angle is the least bit interesting is mistaken. Not even a blip on the radar.
There's a ton of revenue dispersed from the playoffs. You can be certain they consider the money.Since the playoff committee is not made up by the NCAA I really have a hard time believing TV ratings are considered. They are AD's and former players, etc. and I can't imagine they consider viewership ratings and money as part of their criteria.
I can readily see your reasoning on all of this. Behind it all is money, of course. Unique storylines fill stadiums and catch eyeballs of viewers. With Ohio State trying to get out of the Rose Bowl, which was known by the committee before the final rankings, I honestly believe the CFP committee ranked teams in an attempt to possibly get games it wants that will drive ratings.
Scenerio: #22 UCF defeats #18 Tulane in the AAC Championship game (for a second time this season). UCF gets bumped above Tulane and gets a NY6 Bowl. This invite is to the Cotton Bowl.
The #2 SEC team if not in the playoffs goes to the Sugar Bowl. By ranking Alabama ahead of Tennessee this ensures they get this invite and cannot be bumped. Where does Tennessee go? Orange right? Not so fast.
But, since the Orange can take the highest ranked non playoff team from either the Big10 or SEC, Ohio State has a legitimate chance of getting this invite due to being higher ranked than Tennessee and having a half decent argument as to why not attend the Rose Bowl. Penn State ranked 8th for no known reason really helps out here as it gives the Rose Bowl a similarly ranked Big10 team to take.
Who wants to watch UCF in a Bowl game...yuck...no story line here since they will be 10-3 if they beat Tulane and rarely mentioned nationally throughout the season. Wait a second... there is a storyline that will sell this game. What if UCF has to face their old coach?$$$$
There you have it. Tennessee lost it's main storyline with Hooker going down. But the next best thing and a way to get some free pub for an otherwise non-marketable UCF is to match them up against Tennessee.
Not a soul would care to watch the Knights in a New Years 6 Bowl unless you can create a reason to tune in. Right? Like what have they done this year...crickets...wins over Cincinnati and Tulane while both were ranked is kinda cool I guess.
How does Tennessee benefit? Multiple ways actually. First off they would be the favorite even without Hooker. Secondly the storyline will attract more common fans to watch with some interest that might not have. Heuple gets to prove he is the reason for success at his previous program and his system with SEC talent way surpasses his old players and their current system. Good for recruiting I believe and positive momentum going into 2023.
And there you have it. My theory is that Tennessee was ranked below Alabama just in case UCF defeats Tulane again and because the committee knew in advance that Ohio State was leveraging for the Orange Bowl.
Seriously who would tune in to watch UCF against Penn State?. See what I mean. In the wise words of RZA himself "cash rules everything around me C.R.E.A.M. get that money dolla dolla bills yall".
Sorry way too long but not like there is a game to watch so just read it.
Go Big Orange
Sounds more like gladiators in a Roman colosseum...I believe one daycollege football will look like this .
2 none conference game
10 conference games
Sweet 16 Football Championship
1st weekend in December or last week in November Conference Finals
2nd week in December Round 1 played at higher seeds home field (16 teams)
3rd week in December Round 2 played at higher seeds home field (8 teams)
4th week final four played where ever at neutral site . Then the final following week .
It will become something like that.
You said that they โneed to get off that entitlement pedestalโ.If this noise is really out there then the CFP committee needs to do the "right thing" in the final poll and drop tOSU to 7th. They don't want to play in the Rose Bowl? Sorry but they need to get off that entitlement pedestal. They got smacked around by one of the two decent teams they played all year.
Spare me. Yes we screwed ourselves out of the playoffs with a lackluster showing and SC playing the game of their lives. But you canโt tell me we donโt deserve better than the Cotton Bowl and a date with freaking Tulane or UCF after the year we had. Itโs a bad joke if we end up there because Ohio State, the Big 10 and the Rose Bowl are whining like little girls. We are not screwed because nobody thought we would be where we are at the beginning of the year. We are not higher because we got our ass handed to us by a mediocre USCe. No team survives that kind of beat down intact. Be glad we are in a New Years bowl regardless of who we are playing. We will get a lot of exposure. Big steppingstone into next year. Watch and enjoy it for what it is.
The problem with that is that the โhigher ranked teamโ is being made available because they and the conference and the Rose Bowl are trying to buck the system and arrange what they want. Thereby forcing the Orange Bowl to take them. Typical of all three of them. Whining beyotches.Orange Bowl actually has to take highest ranked remaining team between the SEC and Big 10 (and Notre Dame). The contract they agreed to is written in a way such that theyโre not really given much (if any) choice in the matter.
But we donโt care too get shut out of a better bowl that should go to us. Itโs not about the cotton itโs about getting screwed from the Orange that could be disgraceful. I will point out a Fact though. As long as the cotton is taking the conference champ from a lower tier bowl no power 5 team is going to be clamoring to go there. No disrespect for them just telling the truth. I will be glad for a 12 team playoff. At least playing them types of teams when there more is on the line will be more motivation. GBO!Just 2 years ago we were firing Pruitt and 1/3 of our roster left. 2 years later we've exceeded expectations. Since when are we too good to play in a NY6 bowl? Gi..e a damn break. If it happens I'll gladly be watching and happy we're in a NY6 bowl. The
I donโt think anybody is upset about making a NY6 bowl since we havenโt been to one in a long time. I think itโs fabulous. Would love the Cotton Bowl if it was against a good P5 team. But as anything else in life, there are degrees of rewards. Pretty sure the buzz generated in the media, the fan base and the team will be much bigger with a UT-Clemson matchup versus UT- Tulane. But hey thatโs just me. I can only speak for myself. I donโt like to see anybody get less than what is deserved and UT deserves far more than a date with an AAC team. And I donโt like to see people like OSU, the Big 10 and the Rose Bowl get their way by whining because they donโt like the deal.Just 2 years ago we were firing Pruitt and 1/3 of our roster left. 2 years later we've exceeded expectations.
