Vols vs Knights in Cotton Bowl? $$$

People keep talking about UT being damaged goods because Hooker won't play. I doubt that C. J. Stroud would play in an Orange Bowl against Clemson. If he opts out, wouldn't Ohio State be damaged goods too? By the rules, the Orange Bowl should take Ohio State if they are available but my guess is that the Orange Bowl isn't that worried about 'rules' - I doubt they would be sued by the CFP. So, if I'm Mike White, I'm calling the Orange Bowl and telling them that they can be assured that Tennessee will bring at least 40,000 fans to Miami.
Wait...what? Did Danny White leave and his brother Mike come in as the AD? Why wasn't I consulted on this? Left out again!

We will get a NY6 bowl. It’s just I’m afraid it’s gonna be Cotton. Which is disgraceful. If the Rose Bowl actually picks Penn State then the Orange will be forced to pick Ohio State. It’s crooked as hell that the Rose Bowl can impact things that way.

Wow. A NY6 bowl game is disgraceful. Lol. We have some delusional fans.

I'd take UCF in the Cotton Bowl. They have a more recent National Championship than we do. Be thankful Vol patriots.
I'd have to think we'd have a better shot at getting to 11-2 by playing one of those two teams in the cotton. Just hope we draw the team that runs the ball vs a passing offense. While it's sad to see us drop from the sugar then orange to the cotton, it's a helluva lot better than hoping for bowl eligibility and playing in Birmingham or Nashville.

It’s because of the South Carolina game.

Absolutely. This is our bed and we have to lay in it. Just beat an average team and you’re possibly headed to the playoff and going to the Sugar Bowl at worst. Don’t take care of business and you’re playing in a lesser bowl.

I don't really care who we're matched up with or where we play. I'm just looking forward to watching us fight for an 11TH win. It's been a great season. Not going to let the CFP, Kirk Herbstreet, or oHiO sTaTe steal my joy. It's Vols by fiddy no matter what come January.

Seriously, how many players are there out there would pick Tulane or UCF if they only had 3 scholarship offer’s along with Tennessee?

There will be no real interest in the game and it is one of those games with a no win situation.

If you lose or if it’s a close game you’re frustrated with it and if you blow them out it’s what it should have been and not exciting at all.

Tulane or UCF have all of the motivation and we would have none.

It could add nothing to recruiting or damage it.

It is like playing Akron, a no value win and taking a chance on players getting injured.

With Ohio State trying to get out of the Rose Bowl, which was known by the committee before the final rankings, I honestly believe the CFP committee ranked teams in an attempt to possibly get games it wants that will drive ratings.

Scenerio: #22 UCF defeats #18 Tulane in the AAC Championship game (for a second time this season). UCF gets bumped above Tulane and gets a NY6 Bowl. This invite is to the Cotton Bowl.

The #2 SEC team if not in the playoffs goes to the Sugar Bowl. By ranking Alabama ahead of Tennessee this ensures they get this invite and cannot be bumped. Where does Tennessee go? Orange right? Not so fast.

But, since the Orange can take the highest ranked non playoff team from either the Big10 or SEC, Ohio State has a legitimate chance of getting this invite due to being higher ranked than Tennessee and having a half decent argument as to why not attend the Rose Bowl. Penn State ranked 8th for no known reason really helps out here as it gives the Rose Bowl a similarly ranked Big10 team to take.

Who wants to watch UCF in a Bowl game...yuck...no story line here since they will be 10-3 if they beat Tulane and rarely mentioned nationally throughout the season. Wait a second... there is a storyline that will sell this game. What if UCF has to face their old coach?$$$$

There you have it. Tennessee lost it's main storyline with Hooker going down. But the next best thing and a way to get some free pub for an otherwise non-marketable UCF is to match them up against Tennessee.

Not a soul would care to watch the Knights in a New Years 6 Bowl unless you can create a reason to tune in. Right? Like what have they done this year...crickets...wins over Cincinnati and Tulane while both were ranked is kinda cool I guess.

How does Tennessee benefit? Multiple ways actually. First off they would be the favorite even without Hooker. Secondly the storyline will attract more common fans to watch with some interest that might not have. Heuple gets to prove he is the reason for success at his previous program and his system with SEC talent way surpasses his old players and their current system. Good for recruiting I believe and positive momentum going into 2023.

And there you have it. My theory is that Tennessee was ranked below Alabama just in case UCF defeats Tulane again and because the committee knew in advance that Ohio State was leveraging for the Orange Bowl.

Seriously who would tune in to watch UCF against Penn State?. See what I mean. In the wise words of RZA himself "cash rules everything around me C.R.E.A.M. get that money dolla dolla bills yall".

Sorry way too long but not like there is a game to watch so just read it.

Go Big Orange
You lost me at “With Ohio State”

Isn't it the Rose Bowl that doesn't want Ohio State because they've been twice in the last 4 years...not Ohio State not wanting the Rose Bowl?

I think that if we play a team that is perceived to be a much lesser team in a lesser bowl, then more of our players will opt out.

THINK !!! If GA goes on to win it, there will have been ONLY two #1 CFP teams this year … and WE are one of those teams ! Small consolation, maybe. And what if GA loses … and by some turn of events fall to #3 and we finish #4 … 2 years ago who would have believed, right ?

Probably.

Along with thousands of traveling fans deciding to opt out and save the cash, in lieu of a bowl matchup against a G5 snoozer.

The rankings are irrelevant at this point. Everything is about next year

I would prefer Orange but will watch on television whatever bowl Tennessee gets.

Oh I'll watch, and I have nothing against the Cotton Bowl; it's a great bowl. I just hate the matchup because it's pretty much a no win situation for us.

If we won over UCF/Tulane, then big deal, we should have. If we lost it would be new, especially if it's "UCF beats former coach!" and UCF would declare themselves another fake national championship.

The Vols are being disrespected big time. If we get bumped to the Cotton bowl, should we just take a self-imposed bowl ban this year if it would close the book on the NCAA junk and get it behind us? I'm not advocating one way or another, just posing the question.

Do bowls really matter that much today after the trend began where players bail out to get ready for the draft? It's almost to the point of saying the play offs matter, but the bowls are pretty much like a pre-season game in the NFL where folks still go to see, but no one takes them serious

No because you are giving up practice time and game experience, which could help next year.
