War in Ukraine

Just curious if any of you guys are paying attention to what is going on our northern border or keeping up with the long lasting chaos on our southern border? Seems like most of you care more about Ukraine's borders than your very own.

Yes, of course. It's the same story everyday and it's bad. It's not going to change until November or next January at the earliest. If the Republicans don't look at impeachment for the southern border then they are idiots and hopeless. Somebody should get jail time.

State Department put out a do not travel advisory on Moldova citing the Russian military buildup. That country has its own issues with a Russian backed separatist republic on its territory and has some Russian forces stationed there to.

You are welcome to list all the things NATO has implemented outside of the US to defend Ukraine. Germany and France have done next to nothing, NATO is useless. NATO’s entire mission is to keep Russia in check so of course they are going to protest but not much other than that. Where was NATO during the annexation of the Crimea? What does NATO bring to the table other than leeching off of the US? The US’s greatest ally is Great Britain and would still be the US’s greatest ally with or without NATO. We waste billions of dollars a year propping up NATO

NATO has no obligation to none-members like Ukraine. Why would they? If they did, why would anyone join and PAY to be part of NATO.

NATO has largely been a successful group. It was the principal vehicle by which we won the cold war, and it continues to be relevant today.

Also, possible good news this AM:

I’m hopeful, but remain skeptical. The Duma voted to ask Putin to recognize breakaway regions in Ukraine, which would almost certainly mean war. I suppose he could decline.

Have we stuck our noses in this? I’m sure the corrupt politicians, Boeing, all the gun and ammunition manufacturers that buy politicians would love to get involved in a war. Sacrifice American lives to get them even richer

You been asleep for the last couple months?

At no point did I say that had an obligation to non NATO members, I said their very existence is to check Russian aggression which is what was occuring in Ukraine. The principle vehicle that won the Cold War was the US' investment into massive re-armaments that the Soviet Union simply could not keep up with economically. The only thing most NATO nations provided was land to house US bases and defensive weapons systems. I can assure you the reasons IF the Russians are withdrawing have nothing to do with threats from any NATO nation not named the US. It would have everything to do with concessions in the Ukraine not a delivery of berets from Germany and France.

Or, the Russians really could have been doing training exercises just like they said they were doing.

The gene pool in Europe has been decimated throughout the past 2 centuries. With all of the wars, and people immigrating to the Americas they have been left with the weakest of males to propagate. In other words a continent of Luthers.
Imagine the last of your bloodline being political activists in DC. Jesus

Please dude. The Trump administration agreed to the withdrawal date of May 1, 2021 from Afghanistan while Trump was still in office.

But, sure, blame Biden.

I blame him for the execution of the withdrawal. And if he wanted to delay it, or even move it up, what the hell were they going to do about it. He screwed the pooch on the way we exited.

The Biden Administration wasted the first 3 months in office not doing anything about withdrawing until mid April.

Yes, Biden's withdrawal was terrible. But had Trump remained in office, there was no way we would have executed the withdrawal Trump had agreed to, unless we similarly left everything there.

Fair but we're out after 2 decades, trillions of dollars, unknown lives lost or ruined, etc. Three other POTUS had the chance and did nothing. Would 4 months have really made the difference? Was it going to get done under the previous guy who had 4years?

Now we need to escape Iraq as well. Hopefully with better planning

There is a cyber attack under way against Ukraine. The MoD website is down and several banks are being targeted. Cyber was mentioned as being the opening phase of any invasion.

Russian State Duma also voted to recognize the separatist DNR/LNR republics talk about adding fuel to the fire. It goes to Putin to make official.

Is this confirmed? I've seen random tweets but nothing official.

If he approves, it's easy to see how it could lead directly to invasion.
He's also playing up the "genocide" of ethnic Russians in Luhansk and Donetsk again, which was the original justification to send in the little green men in 2014. He made another statement to that effect today.

I always thought an invasion of the entire country was highly unlikely, and military action of any kind was probably less than a 50% chance, but perhaps he is going to send Russian regular troops into the area of Eastern Ukraine he already effectively controls and formally declare them to be part of Russia. I think that Putin's costs of doing so would be pretty low, so it probably is an attractive option right now. He has already achieved another goal, which is to get NATO/EU/US to listen and pay attention to him. He's probably talked to more Western leaders directly in the last 2 weeks than the last 5 years.
