It would be a “stalemate” only because the US would stop just short of completely occupying and or destroying Moscow.

A conventional war means air superiority is key and the US and NATO would make sure no Russian aircraft left the ground.

Ras has a point. In a war between the US and Russia it would make a difference in location - where the war takes place. Just like real estate, wars are all about location, location, location. You could knock out Russia's first line of defense and then find yourself swallowed by a logistics and insurgent nightmare. There's just too much land to take and hold ... much the same with the US and China; it's one factor that make the three of us different as far as world powers. Each has the land to absorb an impact and each has a lot of sustaining resources - hard to make a fatal blow facing that with conventional weapons.

You're right--it would take a lot of troops to hold significant land. But we could knock out all their major military assets and leave them with just ground troops to defend it.

We rarely know when to walk away anymore, and generally seem to wind up hanging on to the tiger's tail. Just take the W and go home without turning things into an Agincourt.

We have no problem dominating on the battlefield. We just don’t seem to understand neither party wants us there, the ones we just kicked the **** out of or the ones we were “helping”.

I really prefer what’s happening in Ukraine. They are absolutely willing to fight for their country. Passionate about it even. So arm them, train them, cut them loose and enjoy the show as long as they want to fight. And kicking Russia’s ass is just a wonderful bonus.

Absolutely agree, and I'm constantly amazed by people in this thread that think we should play no part in Ukraine - and sometimes even NATO. I guess as we move further in time the lessons of nonintervention (like pre-WW2) have been lost. The same kind of thing set us up for a protracted Cold War, and our global policies have funded the Chinese military that one day we and our allies may have to deal with.

I would really like to see us pull Germany and France to the lead in NATIO, kicking and screaming like a petulant 3 year old if we must. They have the most to lose in a European continent war so nut up and defend yourselves for once FFS. No problem helping them on that, I’d always rather fight on someone else’s turf

I don't know about that. The French couldn't organize a birthday party, and they seem to have a history of pizzing off the Germans.

I can't understand or believe the arrogance of some of you people. You act as though the US has a long string of victories since WWII. Outside of Granada and Panama, there really isn't much to hang our hats on.
