War in Ukraine

Fact is, Ukraine is not going to win, no matter how any twitter videos you post about some Russian tank being destroyed. If Ukraine wants to defend themselves that fine and understandable but ultimately they'll lose and the tens of billions dollars we spent will be wasted. I hope Ukraine can defend themselves and drive Russia back but I don't think it will happen.

Define win.

Because there's not a scenario where Russia wins.

If the US has to enter this war, then there is no scenario where we win if we sacrifice the lives of our men and women.

"We" aren't at war. Ukraine and Russia are, we along with the rest of NATO (and beyond) are simply giving them weapons and intel.

Ginning up a slippery slope fallacy continues to underwhelm.

I don't think either wins. Ukraine may defend their country but the loss and destruction will be devastating. If russia wins, they'll take over a ruined country.
As long as Russia occupies Ukrainian territory they are going to be a pariah and excluded from world commerce and trade. BRIC’s ass they can bluster all they want if they want their economies to grow then they stay in the world commerce. There is no scenario where Russia keeps one square mile of Ukrainian land and “wins”

Now, I wouldn’t. Russia has been exposed as a joke. Who wants to partner up with that?
Belarus, North Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Syria?

Like if Biden looks dead in the water leading up to the election next year?

There is something about the “Rally around our President during a time of war” narrative that drives power thirsty men to make rash decisions.

There are really only 2 instances where I could see us going to war:

1. Putin does something really dumb, such as attacking a NATO country.

2. We stage a false flag to justify putting troops on the ground.

If Biden is that desperate, such as in your scenario, I could see option 2 being possible.

Russia using a BF nuke would draw us in I think

from what I've read, countries are still buying russian resources.

Back when I started a long time ago in a galaxy far far away the bid specifications were frankly pretty detailed. That’s both a good and a bad thing as it’s easy to over constrain a contractor’s response. But a good gov contract mgr could balance that.

Today at the other end of the spectrum we’ve sometimes gone to an abomination called a “performance specification” which from my experience is laughable in many cases from a content perspective. (Another gift from the azzhat I mention below)

It was obvious many years ago in the nuclear industry that by the time a plant was built the electronics were obsolete. Seemed like you should build the plant and then finish up the electronics as the plant neared completion. You know you need a controller or signal processor, of course, but when you actually build it is somewhat optional. The nuclear industry has it's own specs similar to Mil Specs, and as you know replacing a regulatory approved obsolete component is a lot harder and more expensive than an off the shelf component, so if the plant lead time is 15 years and electronics lead time is 5 years - adjust accordingly. Business and project management types love the critical path thingy, so at least take advantage of it if you're bound to plot it all out.

In military hardware, for example, build the airplane, and keep the electronics somewhat modular and upgradable. Electronics generally become smaller, so you'd think the concept is viable.

The claim is that "sensor fusion" is what makes the F-35 good - it sure isn't the sleek lines; I've read it called the Warrior Penguin and Fat Amy - I'd go with Constipated Stovepipe. What if you could just plug that hardware into other viable airframes - F-22, F-15EX, F-16, and F-18. We have both pulled the electronics out of a computer and stuffed new guts in recently with great results. True, an airframe is significantly different from a computer case; but consider the block upgrades for aircraft and the mods to Ukrainian Migs and Sukhois so they can use NATO weapons. Why not plan for modernization instead of planning for obsolescence.
