US election looms over NATO discussions to Trump-proof Ukraine aid

BrusselsCNN — The imminent US presidential election hung over a meeting of NATO defense chiefs this week, as NATO allies braced for US support for Ukraine to shrink over the next year if Donald Trump wins even as Iran, North Korea and China step up their military aid to Russia.

In a closed-door meeting with his counterparts on Thursday at NATO, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke about the upcoming election in response to questions about it from allies and how it might impact Ukraine aid, saying he can’t predict the future but that there is still bipartisan support for Ukraine in Congress, according to sources familiar with the meeting.

NATO officials say they are preparing for the US to take on a lesser role.

“We can’t expect that the US will continue to take on an outsized burden” in supporting Ukraine, a senior NATO official said on Thursday, “which is why the Secretary General wants to see NATO leading on security assistance, rather than one ally taking that on.”

“Europe needs to step up even more,” the official added.

If Trump wins and finds himself in a battle with Congress on aid to Ukraine, who wins ?

You think we are sending shrink-wrapped pallets of cash and not military equipment?🤦‍♂️

I'm not sure how this administration sends it, but you're naive to think it's all just 20 year old rusty military equipment.

There is so much propaganda out here about what's going on it is hard to trust much of it.

What appears to be happening is heavy losses on both sides.

I don't think there was ever any attempt to get both sides to stop this conflict early. How could there be with the democrats foreign policy? A trainwreck and a citizenry thrown to the wolves to please elitists and make a point. The average person's life does not matter to elitists.

A solution was never in the cards because that was the whole purpose of the operation since the 90s, see U.S. Congressional Record. Why would the west want an early stop to the conflict?

Nobody cares about the Ukraine and never did, its just a tool to be used. No, life does not matter there. As I mentioned about 2 years ago this could go on for a decade or two, I would say at this point the timetable has been considerably sped up. There might be some type of off ramp after the election, which is something I pointed out last Spring but the problem with that is without the U.S. on board there is no future for an independent Ukraine at this point. There was never an off ramp before the election unless the Ukraine took out the Comedian.

Russia's POV is fairly easy, continue until its destroyed and push those people into Poland i.e. no more Ukraine or Ukrainians, unless someone presents a workable solution. Just my take, Russia should be careful of accepting some half-ass solution that will haunt them for decades to come. Bring it to a final conclusion with no or limited loose ends.

Generally, I would imagine to the Last Ukrainian (United States vessel) or submit to Russia (a part or vessel of Russia).

The good news is Georgia rebelled against the West's tricks to get them to enter the fray, so.... more sanctions on them but at least they have a country for the time being.

Oh wow, you really do believe that pallets of cash are shipped to Ukraine?

Well now that I have proven we indeed have given BILLIONS in cash to Ukraine, you move the goalposts.

By this point of this clown show, I'd guess we just have Zelensky's bank routing #
Yes, over nearly 3 years, we have pledged ~ $23 billion in direct financial support.

Of course it's all in pallets of cash that Ukraine is dropping on the heads of Russian soldiers to eliminate them.

Whether it's shrink wrapped pallets or paid in bitcoin. You were wrong. We do indeed send cash to them.

What's your point. You would have us *not* support Ukraine's people? Just let them get taken over militarily, their people slaughtered, and their government erased?

Curious... tell me about your position in 1990 when Iraq took over Kuwait. Did you support our boys actually dying in the sand there during our *direct* military action to help Kuwait against its aggressive neighbor? Last I checked, Kuwait isn't in NATO.

Lemme answer the question for you: You supported Kuwait and our country did, too, because we had a strategic interest in its existence / survival. The same applies to Ukraine. Those that say otherwise are either ignorant or have a vested interest in supporting Russia.

interesting choice of words considering how much its been stated ITT that we are actually giving less than others. but here is an official saying we give an "outsized" amount, which means "more than our fair share" to me.

Seems like a pretty significant thing to lie about, and even more so when he defended it repeatedly later.
Are you saying Tump doubled down on something stupid he said? Shocked. It would be almost as stupid as doubling, tripling, or more on Russia being in possession of tapes showing a nominee for POTUS being pissed on by prostitutes. Almost
