I genuinely don’t understand why he thought they wouldn’t fight.

He may have believed his own "liberator" rhetoric a bit much. In certain parts of Ukraine, it is true and older Ukrainians perhaps who remember being very closely aligned maybe there was less resistance. Also, I am sure they were trying not to blow stuff up or kill people initially so that they could keep with the story of liberating and just toppling the government, then turn everything mostly still intact back on with a new gov. Thats not happening yet so it looks like backup plan is to crush them into subjugation, then maybe try some negotiation. It has worked before.

Same resource drag that eventually destroyed the Romans. Every new war or enemy required the permanent stationing of Legions in far flung corners of the Empire. They eventually became so overextended that they lost control of their borders and also had to start staffing their legions with non Romans. After that, the expected consequences were of course inevitable

You can argue that most of the terrorists were Saudi Arabian in origin but you cannot make a valid argument that they weren't trained and supported in Afghanistan by the Taliban. You could argue that we shouldn't be in the business of regime changes but we didn't have much choice in Afghanistan. Iraq is a different story
