War in Ukraine

From some quick googling, I'm seeing that about $64 billion in Russian debt is held by entities outside of Russia.

So this is interesting. The question now is would they officially call a default? If they do, then that triggers a bunch of credit default swaps. Basically, that would also light the fuse on a series of derivative bombs...

Also, Russia has demanded that debt holders in Russia pay the creditors in rubles...

In the days of the USSR, Soviets controlled the Ruble's value so it was always worth more than a dollar, at least on the official exchange. I was in Russia in the early 90s. I was getting 500-600 rubles to the dollar and that was the official exchange rate. People on the street would give 1,000 or more rubles for a buck. There wasn't much to buy so it didn't mean much to me. I don't know if the Russian's revalued their currency since then or just scraped back to where they were/are. All to say, we're nowhere near close to their rock bottom. They have billions in our dollars and the Chinese will buy every drop of Russian oil and natural gas the we and Europe don't buy. I don't think we're beating them into submission with sanctions.

Thank you for helping me get my day started by making me feel stupid.

Guess I better steer this conversation back to military aviation.

Sorry, that wasn't at all my intent. Just pointing out that we do study how things work and how to prevent incidents like you described. I don't recall hearing about that particular incident, but one at the SL-1 reactor is very worth reading - not the kind of thing that could happen in a commercial reactor. It and Chernobyl screwups are why testing in nuclear facilities is very tightly controlled - at least in the US. The rule of thumb is that if something doesn't respond in the manner expected, STOP RIGHT THERE and then figure it out. There's no doubt that people have died of radiation exposure before anyone fully understood the nature of radiation and the effects on the human body. Marie Curie was one pioneer who died from the consequences of radiation exposure. There's a story that circulated around ORNL about Rickover and being the arrogant jerk he was pulling the plug out of an experimentation port in a pile reactor so he could look in - maybe true - who knows.

The first fatal nuclear meltdown in the U.S. happened in 4 milliseconds

BTW I've always found military aviation more interesting anyway - but without 20/20 vision not to be for me.

The vises are tightening on both Ukraine and Putin. Thing is, Ukraine has nothing to give but complete capitulation and that will be forced upon them, not something to be negotiated. On the other hand, Putin can try to save his own ass by backing off and trying to keep the former Russian-controlled areas in the Donbas as part of a negotiated solution.

And then fade into the sunset, but alive.

Again, allegedly. I'm only speculating. At least I'm saying that and offering that as a preface whenever I see or hear something. These other guys don't even do that on here with their twitter posts and Russian casualty count. At least acknowledge me for doing that. Now, we will see if it is BS or truth in the next few days. I'm not sure of the majority of what is coming out, but the guy in that video is actually on the ground in Kharkiv. I also throw out a reason why I gave it some weight because I (along with mostly everyone else) has been wondering about this alleged convoy of 20 or 40 miles long outside of Kyiv and why have they been mostly unharmed in the past few days. Is it likely because the bulk (or a significant number) of the Ukrainian forces are pre-occupied somewhere else or doing something else? Also something that I didn't add but saw mentioned somewhere else, but it is alleged that the Russians were siting back and waiting for just enough of the Ukrainian forces to get within this region before they pounced on it.

You are not really paying attention. I demonstrated how it is done properly. I put you in check (which pleases your many detractors who consider you a Putin shill), while actually offering substantial evidence of what you said, (which undermines Ukraine's position that this war just started a few days ago and that they were just innocently standing by).

Do you not understand that the truth is of little importance in a propaganda war? For most people, on both sides - they are not really looking because they do not want to see. They have already chosen a side and so their glasses are colored. Yours too.

I have no doubt that the truth lies in the middle somewhere. But right now, the propaganda is being heavily pumped in the west right now. That video I posted was simply one voice that countered the general narrative. One voice that is actually on the ground. And again, I clearly said "allegedly". He could be full of it, but his perspective is just as valid as anyone else.

Weird. I am against mandates as well but nothing was “tyrannical”. My life was normal and fine and I never felt under tyranny and the worst ever asked of me was private businesses to ask me to wear a mask on their property and for the state of Hawaii that asked me to register on their website before I visited for 2 weeks. The horror.
Meanwhile I continue to see you post that police are all bad, that doctors and nurses are lying and murdering people and need to be executed and that Putin wasn’t going to invade and then when he did it’s the US and Ukraines fault lol

Ras is correct. We went down a pretty bad path of tyranny with the COVID stuff. Politicians over reached and seemed to enjoy doing so.

We dealt with forced business closures and other restrictions like occupancy limits, business hour restrictions, and onerous ppe requirements; mask mandates; and vaccine passports in some parts of the country.

To pretend like this didn’t happen or minimize the impact on personal liberty is choosing to lie to yourself. Maybe it wasn’t near that bad where Ricky is, it was this bad in many other places. The information is out there for anyone who wants to see it.

And regardless of Ricky’s personal beliefs, the police enforced much of this. I saw it with my own eyes and have even shared a few of those stories here.

I will never be deluded into thinking that the police won’t enforce just about any mandate the government lays down. It won’t be all of them, but enough of them will do it that it will make those that sit it out of no consequence. If they will enforce laws that keep your business closed, what won’t they do?

Let’s come out of COVID with our eyes wide open. We should never allow something like that to ever happen again.

The police enforced what exactly where you were
