War in Ukraine

Boy, a ton of aircraft and vessels from various countries in and around Ukraine right now. Just hope everything stays peaceful.

I mean, could you imagine another MH17 incident?

I won't lie, this is getting kind of scary. Small brush fires can turn into a massive forest fire. These little issues are what created world wars.

Really don't think we're to that point but you're right all it takes is one incident to spark a fire that plunges the world into war (See World War One). Another thing too I saw is Russia is moving its yearly nuclear exercises to February as well. Last time they rescheduled them they invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014.

I really do feel sorry for the misery that will come to the civilians if/when the balloon goes up.

Listening to Dan Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon while sick with covid and its an interesting account. Still don't think we'll see Great Power wars again in our lifetime because of MAD.

My big question is how much resistance will Ukraine actually put up? Will they fight to the bitter end, and how much can they put up even if they want to?

Ukraine would be overrun rather quickly by the Russians, and they would be defeated even if they fought until the bitter end. However, Russia occupying Ukraine is another question.

And just as importantly: Mutually assured economic destruction.

It has zero WW1 vibes other than alliance of NATO which is hapless. Society is different, militaries are different in terms of their roles in government, soldiers are different, and conscription is a non starter. There will never be another conventional total war.

xiden says Kiev would be overrun in 3 days, so that is more like 90 minutes based on the accuracy of their Afgan gov stability assessment.

Guess one benefit for Putin will be the ability to test his new hypersonic weapons in actual combat.

A Slava class missile cruiser was near there, guess we wanted to see if it was carrying nukes?

The only way Kiev falls in three days is if are Russian sympathizers and maybe they are. Ukraine has the ability to put up a substantial fight if they want to. It has always been my fear that they will turn into another Afghani army when push comes to shove which is why no US soldiers should be anywhere near it

I respectfully consider this revisionist history.

Germany was winning the first five months while a Russia continued to hunker down and wait for winter. Once winter hit the tide completely turned.

Stalingrad forced them to move more troops in which helped open other areas for the Allies.
Uh the winter two years later?

Barbarossa was in june 41. Stalingrad ended in feb of 43, and didnt start until late 42.

Stalingrad was fought with a TON of american equipment.

Hitler being a complete meth addict trying to dictate what his troops did, and having an ego, turned the tide. It probably wouldnt have mattered if the Soviets lost any or all of their major eastern cities. Germany couldnt do two fronts. Stalingrad sped up their defeat, but wasnt the key of it.

That would not surprise me.

Vietnam Regurgitated | The Libertarian Institute

Here, at home, we have not experienced wars employing mass-destruction weapons. Maybe one day will we receive an education about the consequences of wars as a nation. Surely, we learned nothing from Vietnam as it never happened here.

These wars that we persist with are not only cowardly, they demonstrate our lack of respect for other nations, their people and our national conscience. Notably, they demonstrate our being a failed nation not capable of controlling or directing its own interests. We will go down in history as that most powerful, but most surrogate nation ever. Stunningly shameful with the blood of others staining our once proud national emblem.

While we busy ourselves with “enemies” that we and “friendly” others have invented, we have become oblivious to the enemy within. The one taking us down.

Germany’s defeat was inevitable once a two front war was initiated just like in WW1. It was unsustainable. A lot of events began their demise: allied invasions of North Africa and Sicily; blunder at Dunkirk; defeats at Stalingrad and Kursk; inability to defeat England by air; lack of viable naval fleet; Hitler’s idiotic military leadership purges; Italian military was useless
