We are a top 25 team in 13.

Considering the history of this program and who we have on the roster we definitely SHOULD be top 25 next year.

11 win team last year with that defense??? That made me lol

Wouldn't have had THAT defense without Buddy Hackett. The year before his sorry arse our D was solid. THAT D with last years O would've made for a very good team.... Oh wait, Dools was still there..... Never mind

Regardless of our final 2013 W-L record, I'm looking forward to this season because we won't have:
1. Coach Sal
2. The toxic atmosphere among coaches, and between coaches and players that existed in 2012.
3. Certain prima donnas (you know who they were).
4. Last and certainly not least, we won't have the worst HC (so far) in the entire history of UT football.

I believe we will beat Oregon and upset a couple of big SEC teams too. We have talent. We now have a great staff and coach. We had an 11 win team last year if not4 Dools! We may lose to Bama,Fla,Uga,or Scar, but I honestly believe we get 1 or 2 of them. I think we can go UNDEFEATED AT NEYLAND! Plus 1 or 2 upsets on the road! BOOM! A Jan 1st bowl and a lot of swagger and momentum for the 14 signing class. I believe we will have a top 5 class in 14. We all need to back our team and EXPECT TO WIN! WE SHOULD NEVER EXPECT TO LOSE 6-7 GAMES! THIS IS NOT DOOLS! We HAVE A GOOD,SEC TEAM! If Butch coaches like I believe,we`ll be a top 25 team in 13. We addressed our positions of need. We got 5 good QBs,we have a great class of WRs. We have Lane and Neal and Lee behind the number ONE O-LINE! We got immediate help on D. We will probably add a few more JUCOs on D before the AP game. Our D is experienced and talented. AND SAL IS GONE! The sky is the limit. We need our fans to show up at the O&W game and all the games. We need excitement. We will wear cool unis vs Ore and WIN 35-27! we may beat Fla! GO VOLS!

Dude give me so of those shrooms so I can join you on that trip!!! All joking aside I hope we come out and surprise people. I would be okay with hell just going to a bowl next year after the last three years. In 14 I"ll expect more.

I love this optimism, but I am going to try to not buy in like I have every year just to be disappointed. I hope I am proven wrong

It's our job as fans to buy in!! We need to shoe confidence and support in our team!

Webbvol! I am feeling your opening post and the message you are sending.

I hope everyone who is a Vol fan will shake off the cob-webs and sub-par expectations that resulted from a less-than-mediocre stretch of seasons and performance.

We should expect the type of change seen when UT hired Coach Pearl. It is not too much to ask that we should expect instant results - good results. If Pearl is any indicator of what a new coach can do with average or slightly above average talent, then there is no reason our football Vols will continue their sub-standard performance and efforts.

What you described in the OP is exactly the type of results we need to see.

I can almost hear Brent Musberger saying, 'Well folks, if there was any question about the Vols, it has been answered in grand style. With tonight's win over Alabama, the Tennessee Volunteers send a wake-up call to the rest of the SEC and the college football world, they are back and they are for real!'

I admire your optimism but we still have serious team speed issues on defense.

6-6 will be an improvement. Dooley was the worst coach in UT FB history. He had 6 to 8 players that will be in the NFL and couldn't even win 6 games.

I'll reserve my opinion on that until the season gets under way. It's really hard to judge by last season. Chasing someone down from two or three yards away (In Position) vice chasing them down from 10 yds away (out of position) will give us a better understanding of team speed on Defense.

Defense played out of position in game 1...and were still playing out of position in game 12. THAT was the coaches fault.

Here's what will make me happy as a recovering Dool-Aide drinker:

Butch needs to wipe the floor with WKU, Austin Peay, and South Alabama. No lee-way there at all.

I think Oregon, my only expectations truly are to come in and handle pressure well, and keep up with them tempo wise. I do think they will win ultimately, just looking at it on paper, and the fact that Autzen is a ridiculously hard place to play. But it we can hang close, and give them their money's worth, I will be okay with that, since it's so early in the season.

Florida is always tough playing in the Swamp. Plus, they just have such an insanely good defense. I think it will be a tougher game in some ways than Oregon will be. But, I think that having played Oregon the week before will help us to expose some errors and fix them before we go to Florida. I actually think no matter our performance in Oregon, we do well at Florida. I'm not saying that we win hands down, but I am saying that I could see us being a little more prepared to handle them than in years past.

Georgia worries me a lot because of how much they run the football, and how many people they have to do it. And that worries me because our front 7 is not the best in the SEC. Losing Sentimore didn't help either. We have good linebackers when they're healthy, and McCullers is good for about 30-35 snaps a game, and Mo is still there, but I'm hoping we discover some hidden beasts on the DL. Really need for O'Brien to turn out like we thought he would. If we can control the run game, and make Murray beat us, then we could win at home.

South Carolina should be a win for us. Tiny owned Clowney last year. No Lattimore either. We should be able to take that one.

Alabama. Sorry, I don't see it. Jones may have an outstanding gameplan and may keep us close, but the pure depth and talent factor alone just puts us at an immediate disadvantage. Especially with no true star playmaker on offense. Think about it, the last people to really beat Bama either had a Cam Newton, a Johnny Manziel, or a very very talented defense (LSU). We have none of those at the moment. Would be a hard win.

Missouri. I think this one is a no brainer. We would have taken this one last year, had it not been for Doofus. We win this one.

Auburn. It's hard to say. They have as unsure a QB position as we do. They have talent, but the question is will Malzahn be as good as they think he will be? If he is, then they win, based on the fact that the talent and depth is greater at Auburn. If not, then I think we might can take this one. What happened to Auburn last year was a huge coaching failure. But I don't think it's going to happen again. I'm going to chalk this up as a loss, just because I think Auburn will bounce back well this year.

Vanderbilt. After everything I've heard about Franklin, and what he has done and said, I hope Butch runs the stinking score up on him 100-0. Butch better win this game. Tennessee does NOT lose to Vandy twice. I dont think we ever have.

Kentucky. They will be a lot more competitive than in years past. Stoops will do a good job there. But they still have a lot of ground to make up before they're competitive in the SEC. UT wins this one.

My prediction: 7-5 and a bowl win. Losses against: Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Oregon, Auburn.

And I would be very happy with that if it came about. A winning season is no longer taken for granted in these parts.

But i'm not going to predict us being a Top 25 team, or even a 10 win season. I just think we are too far behind to do that. It's going to take a year or so for us to get the system down and get to flowing offensively and defensively. But once we do, we'll be alright.

I like your post. You are explaining your reasons for expecting to lose. I will expect to beat bammer 70-0! I will be ecstatic if we go 7-5. I just think we`ve got more depth and talent than many realize due to Dools ineptitude. We definitely win 8. I see us annihilating AP,WKU,SA. I see us upsetting Oregon and possibly Floriduh. Our most trying games are FL & AL by far. The talent differential isn`t as big with the other teams. UGA is 3. I believe we can beat SoCar and Oregon. Maybe just maybe we have the coach we have ALL been looking for for so long. GO VOLS!

See...last year, I was you. Predicting 9, 10, 11 games.

But being Vols does not make us superheroes. Now, is it possible that we could have an incredible unbelievable season, and the unthinkable happen? Yes.

But realism says that we are changing our offense to the spread for the first time ever at this school. We are breaking in a QB who unless it's Worley has never played a snap against anyone, much less Oregon and Alabama. We're breaking in some WR's that the most experienced of is Vincent Dallas and Pig Howard. We're breaking in some TE's that have never played on our team. The only thing that is the same is the RB's, and the OL. And even then, both RB's have suffered injuries in the past, and so you hope they're 100% physically and mentally, and your OL is learning a whole new blocking scheme to accommodate the spread.

Realism says that we are changing back to a 4-3, which could mean that those like Jacques Smith who got moved to better suit the 3-4 are going to have to readjust to a 4-3. Which means that we are going to have to use even more DL, which we did not recruit many of, and we are not deep on, since we lost Sentimore. Our defensive backfield lost its best player in Waggner, Randolph will be coming back from an injury, and once again, a whole new defense. We can only hope that the transition will be smooth.

Realism says that we still have Palardy as a kicker, and unless he's improved drastically, he's still not consistent and dependable.

Realism says that we have lost our 3 best offensive players and go-to guys.

I mean, trust me, if we go 11-1 or whatever, nobody on this board will be happier than me.

But I have gotten my hopes up FAR too many times thinking that we will win this game, when we get demolished.

I never walk into a game 100% expecting to lose. But I know that there are some games that we are just not supposed to win. Not going to win, and not supposed to win are two different things.

I'm just saying, for me to be happy with Butch, I feel like 7-5 plus a bowl is what he needs to do at minimum. And I feel like that is possible, and therefore expected. Anything else is just a cherry on top.

And I'm not trying to sound rude with that. I'm just walking you through my thought pattern. I think Butch is the guy too. But I just think it's going to be a difficult year 1. It is for almost any coach coming into a situation with decent talent. Urban Meyer walks in year 1 and goes undefeated, but look at what he had to work with. Muschamp had great talent when he got the program, and he still took two years to make them championship level. Even Saban took two years to get Bama to NC level.
