We Beat Bama in 2014

A national title is the ultimate goal for the university of tennessee football team and butch jones is the current coach i think it is a relevant question. if a national title is not the goal for tennessee football within the next 5 to 6 years then we need no longer have a football program. Butch came here to win championships and not just sec ones the way i see it. Without a National Title in the next 6 years i don't see tennessee getting back to the 1997-2001 era of football ever again. that is not to say the program won't be successful but we as a program and fanbase want championships.

Geez, I cannot believe I'm about to write this:

To assume that Tennessee will be forever outside of the top tier if they don't win a national championship in the next six years is to ignore the entire history of the Tennessee football program.

The Vols were arguably the best program in the nation nation from the late 30s to the beginning of the 50s. By the end of the 60s, if they weren't one of the best in the country, they were certainly the best in the SEC. But the Vols went from 1969 to 1985 without winning a conference title. They went 47 years between national championships.

It's been sixteen years since UT's last national title. In 1967, sixteen years after the '51 national title, if someone predicted that if Tennessee didn't win a national championship in the next six years they would never win another, he would have completely discounted the possibility of the 1997-2001 run that you just mentioned.

I mean none of this to suggest that Jones will or will not win a title during his tenure in Knoxville. I'm simply suggesting that a boom-or-bust prediction requires a willfull ignorance of the program you claim to love.

That felt good, didn't it? :)

wow bamawriter ignored bama's history to say ours was great, which we all already know it was and is. i have said that all along the problem is though we have been living in the past for the past 10-15 years due to poor coaching and play on the field. it's time to write a new future that we all can enjoy more than jhort wearing gators and red elephant bammers. i didn't say we would not win another one, i said if we don't have that as a goal then why have football? 7,8,9,10 win seasons should be goals of programs like carson newman and what not. Not a Team that was a Division one powerhouse from 1930's early 1950's and the 1990's.

Actually, what you said was:

Your posts aren't always terribly coherent, but I don't think anyone could be confused about the message you were conveying with that.

so it's ridiculous to think we can beat a rival every year ok.

No, of course it's not ridiculous to think it if you want. Just give well-reasoned examples that inform your opinion, that's all. I hope they'll beat Bama in 2014 but there's virtually no reason to believe it'll actually happen. Bama has a ton more talent and much more proven and far more accomplished coach.

He did. If Dobbs starts.

That's what everybody's saying, but I think by the end of the year when those freshmen mature they'll win their last three and at least make a bowl game.

I hope you're right! Making a bowl game would be a tremendous accomplishment with all the challenges we face this year.

Accidentally read Bamawriter's post and noticed he said UT went 47 years between titles. If we used the Bama math method of counting titles, then that is not true. If they have 15, then we have 6, not 2. Can't have it both ways, B Writer.

Not only did my post not mention Bama's titles, you will never find a post of mine claiming that Bama has 15. Bama has 14, UT has 4. UT went from 1951 to 1998 between titles.

Everyone seems to think our QB will be a problem, my thought is we turn around and hand it off 60 times a game to the 3 stud running backs we have and make the other team stop it.

With a completely new starting OL? When the best position group on the team is inarguably our WRs? Can't see it.
