This after missing his front end of a 1 and 1. Just as bad or worse than Phillips play.
It wasn’t the dunk…. Eating clock is the right play….. it’s missing free throws. It’s missing layups. It’s bad PNR rotation.
Taking the points or getting fouled while shooting was, without question, the correct play. The time left was too much to run out the clock and, if that's really the plan, you have to either get away from the defenders or pass the ball. You can't hold it only to get another in bounds play because ---incredibly ---- they still have another foul to give.
It was a mistake. He'll learn from it and the team will get over it. The only folks who won't will be some of us fans who never make mistakes and see everything so clearly in hindsight.
I’m going to disagree… you don’t get to coach with hindsight. Game would have still come down to needing to make free throws and defend a panic PNR properly. They didn’t, so they lost.
Bad situational basketball. In a game you want to limit the other teams opportunities to win as much as possible. Eating the clock left Vandy with literally 1 way to win, and the Vols had 3 outs (score on the blob, make free throws, defend for OT)…. And they knocked it down their 1 way.
Free throws and defend a panic PNR. Improve those 2 areas and you win.
The announcer shared your errant view, as he said “smart play by Phillips”. Please explain a scenario where not scoring and gaining a two possession lead was the right choice. There isn’t one. He got flustered. You are right about that. He made a mistake. There is no explanation other than that was a mistake. In fairness to Phillips, it was one of many mistakes on our side. It was just the most visible one. With respect, I don't think it is hindsight that dictates taking (or trying to take) the points. If the points are taken you have either a 4 or 5 point lead (if fouled and a +1). In either case, Vandy then has to score twice to either tie or win and they have insufficient time left to do so. Again, it was a totally weird situation due to the bizarre foul count so I see the argument. We just disagree.
Taking an easy/free 2 points to go up 2 possessions would have limited the other team's opportunity to win. 2 possessions in 8 secs is a helluva lot different than 1. How are you not seeing that?I’m going to disagree… you don’t get to coach with hindsight. Game would have still come down to needing to make free throws and defend a panic PNR properly.
