We lost when Phillips didn’t take the dunk

The foul count makes it an interesting debate.... I'm not disagreeing that going up 4 is a good look. Its a unique situation in basketball that they didn't perform well in. The bottom line is, make free throws and defend the panic PNR better.... you win that game 100% of the time. Miss free throws, and don't defend and you lose that game 50% of the time lol.

Championship teams control the ball and win at the free throw line.... vols had 2 free throws, their best free throw shooter at the line, and 8 seconds to literally ice the game. They didn't.

We are having the inverse of this discussion if he dunks we go up 4... they score a quick 2.... we miss free throws fail to defend the panic play and they hit a 3.... then we are saying... 12 seconds left.... keep the ball they have to foul you.

Make free throws, defend panic..... you win.
Vescovi's FTs don't happen if Phillips scores. That's the point.

And if that more difficult situation happened, so be it. But that's the thing: Vandy hitting a quick 2, another inbounds/foul, more shots, are all additional steps that MAY have happened. But that's a risk any intelligent player takes because that's a LOT of good fortune. Not taking the shot only leaves 1 thing to happen.

The foul on Phillips happened at 8 secs because the foul on Vescovi was a deadball foul before they inbounds it with still 8 secs. Now you're adding time to make your asinine situation more plausible.

The free throws are always going to happen.

Make 2 Free throws the game is over bro. I hear you, and I love the passion. Winning teams are excited to ice it at the free throw line and hold on to the ball as long as they can.

The foul on phillips is at 10.5 seconds he touched the ball at 14.7 seconds on the SLOB or whatever and they still have to foul you twice... winning teams win at the free throw line. TN will win that game the next time they have that situation, bc of this.

It comes down to the free throws, it comes down to defending panic. I agree my asinine situation is asinine.

Agree. We could fall to a 4 seed.

Personally think they end up in the dreaded 5/12 matchup and get knocked off by some mid major that can actually run an offense and hit 3 pointers.

They have time to turn it around but seen this play out too many times with these Barnes teams to expect it.

Lost in all the attention on JP passing up the dunk, SV missing the front end, SV leaving his guy unguarded in the corner, and Awaka fouling on a 3-point attempt is that ORN wasn’t able to attack Robbins after he picked up his 3rd foul. ORN was roaming around 15-20 feet from the basket instead of taking it to the rim and either drawing #4 or getting uncontested looks.

Although i agree if he had taken the dunk and a good chance at a plus 1, we would have been up by 4 or ,5 and a three wouldn't beat us. I must take blame however, as I was unable to watch untill the end and I turned the tv on and it was us by 2 with 17 seconds left, and we had the ball. I said to myself, well even I can't jinx this one. Little did I know there had only been 3 fouls called on Vandy during the second half. Little did I know, the clock operator would give them approx 4 to 5 seconds extra time ( combined in the 3 throw ins, and missed FT by Vescovi. Little did I know, that we could miss a free throw, Vandy get the rebound and dribble half way up the court and call time out, and gain time on the clock. 4. 8 seconds when free throw attempted. Time out called with 4.0 on the clock. watching the replay, it could have been 4.4 with a clock correction. Instead they put 4.8. ?????? wow, not sure how that worked. We lose , but I guess its my fault. Sorry guys.

Are you high? . He was wide open. TN loses to Bama for sure and Arkansas. They aren’t a cohesive team. We have two guards and the rest mediocre.

Phillips didn’t take the dunk. No way of losing if he does.
Her when we did not cover the wide open shooter from the corner, the easiest 3 point shot on the floor. Had we founded under the basket, all they could have done was tie in regulation time. I am 84 and I would have had a good change to make that shot.

That wasn't the only thing that costed UT the game. Missed free throw from Vescovi, and nobody covering the 3 point shooter at the end of the game. 9 times out of 10,if you're that wide open, it's going in.

Let’s see, KY, FL and now Vandy. I knew they would lose. Just wish I could have bet on it. Barely beat Auburn w luck. Bama going steam roll us as usual. Arkansas is more talented. Barnes is heading south. We need some bigs and not just average forwards. They aren’t that good. Prove me wrong?

None of that would have mattered or taken place if he just does what middle school teams learn to do and take the bucket and go up two scores.

I agree, but I was just saying that it wasn't the only thing that costed them the game. I was frustrated at first, but hopefully it's a learning experience for him going forward if the situation comes up

Yeah, we can blame Juian Phillips for last night's loss. But we also need to blame Vescovi for missing a damn free throw

This team disappoints me with how inconsistent it is.

You just got to have players that can hit their FT's, make shots and have high IQ

How many times have we seen Nkahmoua throw a dumb pass or drop an easy catch? Vescovi has dropped off so bad this season, even some of his shots are a little crazy... remember the last shot he took against Kentucky? Unwarranted

Tennessee needs to get bigs that produce, not just guys that are big. They also HAVE to get players that can score. One of the big problems with Tennessee for years is their inconsistency in scoring, I'm not talking about streaky players.

As of this moment, this team has a sweet 16 ceiling if they draw the correct matchups. As you saw last night, we can lose to anyone when we can't make shots

If I'm Barnes, I'm hitting the transfer portal hard next season

Agreed on pretty much all points. Yes, Phillips made a freshman mistake. A senior leader, 4 year starter, and probably our best player and FT shooter had an easy chance to clean up the frosh’s mess, win us the game, and couldn’t do it. The lack of senior production in big moments has really been a disappointment this season. None of them have stepped up and been the alpha this team so desperately needs. There’s still a month for someone to do it, but I won’t fault anyone who thinks it won’t happen at this point.

Lack of leadership is hurting this team. Plus we simply don’t have great shooters and lack athleticism, Phillips being the exception. TN doesn’t get to the foul line enough & it’s not the officiating. We had three to four ugly airballs last night - Vescovi /JJJ. Neither of them are playing as well as last season.

TN doesn’t have a “go to” guy who can attack the rim. I was hopeful ZZ would be that guy, but his shot is often blocked or he turns it over. He’s shown flashes but just not consistent.

Awaka looked good, but Barnes pulled him in the final four minutes for two horrible plays: bricked a layup then fouled immediately on the other end of the floor. Hopefully that is just a freshman mistake(s) at an in opportune time.

I think this team is fatigued physically and mentally. They beat Auburn but have struggled to close games, again lack of leadership and quality shooters who can attack or put the game away.

I don’t think this team can play well enough to win three to four consecutive games in March, forget six. Hope I’m wrong! GO VOLS!

We giving Vecovi a pass for missing his free throw, as a vet, and then leaving his guy wide open in the corner for the winning 3?

When would you ever strategize that a team would only have 2 fouls called in 19 minutes??

Let’s also not forget the .8 seconds put back on the clock, which was generous.
