We'll Find Out Next Year How Much Real Support The Basketball Program Has.

Don't count the chickens just yet.
This could be one of the most interesting seasons in Tn basketball history.
Many forget that Pearl left Zo with a stable full of 4 star talent.
Don't judge them on last year's results.
Zo and company have a history of coaching talent to a different level.
I for one won't miss a game.

having a full arena is always a good when a fan base is excited and a team is winning the arena will be full, its a pretty simple formula.
Exactly. Im not a huge basketball fan, and had only attended a UT basketball game once before, but since 2007 season, i have made it to a few games a year...but i guess im just a bandwagoneer right? Im not a basketball fan, but i love UT, and i love the excitement and atmosphere, thats why i started coming to more games, i could care less about Pearl, or Martin, if the excitement is still there, i wanna be a part of it...but my guess is, if all thats left are the ones that "know" basketball, and follow it constantly, it will go back to being a pretty boring night and not worth wasting my time and money. On the other hand, i love football, and rarely miss a UT football game, and i know alot more about the game of football than i do basketball, so does that make me more of a "fan" than others who pay the same price and spend the same amount of time to come and watch the football team play but yet doesnt "follow" as closely as I do? This is stupid.

I think Pearl won some games. His teams won games against top tier opponents that they weren't suppose to win on several occasions. If Coach Martin's teams can upset a team or two early on, I see no reason for a huge drop off. If the team plays with great hustle and desire, fans will be on board.

I don't care what side you are on, but it's freaking pathetic to welcome the fact that our attendance is going to drop. Just because some of you have your own little personal vendettas, doesn't mean that those "bandwagon fans" aren't key to any sports team because recruits see packed arenas. And a lot of times those "bandwagon fans" would rather sit at home and watch it on TV instead of wasting money seeing a poor product. That's facts. Sports is about entertainment for the fans. When you don't win, there isn't going to be many fans in the arena not because they are wishy washy, but because they can sit in the comfort of their own homes and not waste money/gas to watch a poor product.

The Pearlophiles and The Go To The Game To Be Seen Crowd will be long gone. The frontrunners will be nowhere to be found. The crowds will now consist of people who actually care about and support the program, not some clown in body paint. It'll be a welcome change.

I actually quit going to games because of these reasons.

I plan on start making it to more games again this November.

I have to admit that I am excited about what Coach Martin will do at UT, but....

How can you not have enjoyed Coach Pearl's success here? To me, if you are calling people who liked Coach Pearl "mental invalids" then you might want to give up being a basketball fan at all. You didn't enjoy being ranked #1 in the country? You didn't enjoy the trip to the Elite Eight? I didn't know Coach Pearl cheated when we took the trip to St. Louis to watch them lose at the buzzer to Michigan St., and at the time, I was glad he was our coach. Now, I'm glad CCM is our coach.

I think I can say I enjoyed the energy Coach Pearl brought to the program and still be excited about fresh blood at the same time. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

:hi:
Good post.

If you think a large number of people came to the games to just see CP, then you are delusional. I believe CP did a lot of things to promote the program and attracted a lot of people to the games, but they didn't come just to see him.

I agree there are people who just come to be seen. They will still come to games and any other events just to be seen, Pearl or no Pearl. Let them come and spend their money and fill the stands. What is wrong with that? Lot's of wives and girlfriends attend because of their husbands and boyfriends. So what?

My hope is they fill the stands, spend their money, pay for the great facilities and high coaches salaries and help win ball games. Having 20,000 stark raving fans for every game would be great, but unrealistic. Some of the ambivalent people in the crowd will eventually become FANatics after attending some games and getting caught up in the moment. Just give them time.

I honestly stopped caring more because of the players not Pearl. I loved Lofton, Jujuan, Wayne, Tyler Smith, and JP. Now our leader is Hopson....

Sounds like we'll be pretty bad next year.

Trash worshipper IMO.

I typically like your input hat, even if I disagree with it from time to time; however, that is the most asinine comment I have seen you make on this website. I feel like its circa 1996 and the sp fans over at listessa are calling everyone a "poseur" because their favorite album is mellon collie and the infinite sadness.

I think the success of the program is directly tied to the quantity not necessarily the quality of our apparent fan base. I would welcome an explanation as to why someone thinks this isn't the case.

No way, because no fan cared about the players, they only cared about the coach. There is no in-between, according to some.

Bringing up this crap over and over, namecalling like a little 14 yr old brat and talking about someone elses character cracks me up everytime.

Yep, tiger would have a real tough time getting tickets. I will give you credit. What your post lack in any semblence of intelligence or worth, they make up for with an inordinate amount of unintentional hilarity.

For everyone responding to the OP. He hates Pearl. It is what it is. Get over it. I hate broccoli. You might hate ham. Get over it.

Now I really enjoyed being #1 even for just a week, going to the dance, went to every UT road game in GA since 06, went to home games in Knoxville when I could, recorded every game on TV the last 2 years and deleted the ones we lost. CP's controlled chaos and winning fired me up and kept me interested since he became coach. After a win in Athens, the players went in the stands after the game and shook our hands for cheering them on. That was pure Pearl promotion. I didn't and still don't love Pearl per se, but like winning and the excitement of a full arena. CP had to go given what he did and the fact that he got caught. But I am grateful that he pushed to program up several notches and hopefully CM can build on it. Am I a "Pearlophile"? I don't think so, but if you want to call me that, have at it.

Enjoy your "real fans" next year because I'm sure recruits will too. Your original post lacked intelligence. Any arena that seats 20,000 plus fans outside of your traditional schools like Kentucky, is going to have a hard-time selling out with a poor product. If you don't realize that "bandwagon fans" are at all schools and are key for recruits, then we see your intelligence. I'm sure if the season is rocky next year, I'm sure the Athletic Dept. is going to be so pleased that only the real fans are coming out. I'm sure it will look good on tv, I'm sure it will look good to recruits. Luckily, in our case we have a huge recruit that should be here for 2012 so hopefully it won't impact us as much as it would in most cases.

One other note, do you think the "real Grizzlies" fans are mad because they sold out in 30 minutes today? I'm sure they hate having the most electrifying arena in the playoffs right now.

Man some people just can't let it go. I guess now that CPF, CLK and CBP are all gone, some people don't have any targets left for their mindless babble. That's why they make hypothetical posts about what will happen NEXT season, without our new coach ever stepping on the court for a game.. Must be a slow day at work.

Good point. Can't you see the Hatvol's of the Memphis Grizzlies stewing in the their juices, furious that fans would come to watch their team, THEIR TEAM, just to be seen and driving up the ticket prices for THEIR seats that they've sat in since the garden of Eden? And these fans stand up! Oh, my gah! The gall!!!!!

Hatgrizzlie's post: "Maybe when they trade away Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, and Gasol we can find out how much real support the basketball program has."
