We'll Find Out Next Year How Much Real Support The Basketball Program Has.

Is this different from the number of people that attended the game?

Said attendance is usually based on ticket sales, so yes it usually is different.

For Tennessee to be in the top 20 in attendance every year with TBA, they have to fill only 55% of the seats. Man, I bet that would look great.

There are only 19 schools with gyms larger than 11,000 seats now? You sure about that?

So, what's the argument here again? We can't attract people without Pearl or what?

Well as long as we can attract about 60% of people, then we can finish in the top 20. However, with an almost 22,000 seat capacity arena, do you think that this enough? And this has nothing to do with Pearl, it's all about winning. If Pearl didn't win, there wouldn't be butts in the seat. If Cuonzo doesn't win (I loved the hire) then there won't be butts in the seat. If Cuonzo wins, then fans will love him and sell a left nut for him. That's just how the business goes.

I see. If Martin wins, we'll definitely have good attendance; but, what Hat is pointing out is that the idiots that supported the University of Pearl will be missing, and that's a good thing.

I disagree. Because more than likely the product is not going to be exciting next year. I hope as hell it is, but it's looking bleak for next year. Most people that supported Pearl was because of winning. Yes, you have your nut jobs that think he was bigger than the University, but winning was the reason people wanted Pearl to stay. To sell out TBA, there is going to be bandwagon fans, there is no way around it. That is going to be the case for most 22,000 seat arenas. Getting rid of those bandwagon fans are not a good thing for looks on TV, looks to recruits, etc...

The Pearlophiles and The Go To The Game To Be Seen Crowd will be long gone. The frontrunners will be nowhere to be found. The crowds will now consist of people who actually care about and support the program, not some clown in body paint. It'll be a welcome change.

How long before the seats are covered again reducing the capacity and then those fans are asked to move down and fill the empty seats during a timeout in the first half?

Your agenda is getting old. You got what you want, Pearl is gone now why don't you enjoy it for a while.

This thread is funny... The biggest contributing factor to our attendance next year will be one thing and one thing only... How we compete at the Maui Invitational... Game, Set, Match...

If we play confused, awful sets and get it handed to us and come home without a win, we will have very poor attendance. If we can muster some fortitude and compete at a high level with inferior talent(especially in the backcourt) with the rest of the field(which is EXTREMELY tough) then we will have good attendance to start the season. The product WILL without doubt contribute to our attendance or lack thereof.

Just win. I do have no problem with some of the mouthbreathers that sit in my section deciding not to show up, though.

With the amount of fairweather fans in Knoxville there will certainly be a hit in attendance. But if you win, they'll come crawling back.

Agree, that's what it is all about. If Cuonzo wins, he will have followers that will kill somebody if they talk bad about him. It's how most sports fans are, especially Tennessee fans. If a coach wins, they support them and would give up their first born for them.

But it does wear on you having a moron next to you yelling for the zorb to make a halftime appearance.

Nothing wrong with wanting our fanbase IQ to be raised a bit, though.

If that's the case, we better hope we draw Georgetown and Chaminade both. Those are the only two teams in that field I think UT can compete with off the top of my head.

interesting, and not surprising debate here.

as many have alluded to, winning tends to make things better.

fans - whether they be of the less knowledgeable or the more snobby variety - aren't as off-putting when the team is winning.

"new" marketing ploys and PR stunts aren't as embarrassing.

tradition isn't as boring.

chants or catch phrases aren't as annoying.

empty seats aren't as noticeable.

ugly uniforms aren't as ugly.

when you lose, though, these itches become more noticeable, and you can't help but scratch them.

Hahahaha! That is priceless.

Memphis, Michigan
Admit it.
You're as much in the dark about next year's team as any of the rest of us.
You don't know what 's going to happen with Harris and Hopson.
And you don't know what Cuonzo and staff can do with the talent on this team.
Can we beat Kansas or Duke? Not many teams can.

Pretty sure I saw UT play Michigan with Harris and Hopson. Wouldn't call that competitive. Also, if you think those guys are coming back, you're being overly optimistic. There's nothing to indicate Hopson has any intention of returning. In fact, there's plenty of indication to the contrary. Also, at the end of the day, does anyone think Tobias Harris is going to pass up being a first round pick to come back and be part of a middle of the pack SEC team?

I just hope Martin goes to the marketing people and explains how essential to the program's success Einstein the Parrot, the Zooperstars, and Melissa Etheridge driven performance art are these days.

Hat's argument assumes that people would show up regardless if we were winning the last 6 years just because of Pearl. That's just not true.

I agree with everything but the bolded part. Hat isn't suggesting we should purposely throw games so that we can see who our true fans are. He is stating that he thinks we aren't going to be any good. Thus, we will see how many of the people that have been packing out Thompson-Boling will continue to show up... I think Hat cares more about basketball than he does seeing who the true fans are. Pretty sure if he had the option of keeping bandwagon fans, an SEC Title, and a Final Four Appearance or losing 20 games and getting rid of the bandwagon fans, he would pick keeping the fans. Some of you on this board just look too hard to find something that just isn't there...

I know something that is not too hard to find and that is you are a jock rider....I am not saying Hat is right or wrong (although I do agree with him on this) I am just saying why dont you let him defend his arguments and you worry about yourself. http://www.volnation.com/forum/images/smilies/default/shaking2.gif
