We'll Find Out Next Year How Much Real Support The Basketball Program Has.

:blink:It's amazing how many people have rushed into support the over-the-top OP. If ever there were a post that should be roundly rejected, it should be one that posits the idiotic notion that lower attendance is good.

I just hope Martin goes to the marketing people and explains how essential to the program's success Einstein the Parrot, the Zooperstars, and Melissa Etheridge driven performance art are these days.

I hope he's actually pro-silence for halftime entertainment.

If that's the case, we better hope we draw Georgetown and Chaminade both. Those are the only two teams in that field I think UT can compete with off the top of my head.

Even with those, we can compete, but can we win? IDK, it will be difficult for sure but hopefully we can pull something off. Chaminade will be my hopeful first round draw. /fingers crossed

Are u fo real? Did u watch the Barcelona Real Madrid Game yesterday? Messi is def the best player right now. Ronaldo is good but Messi is great.

Ronaldo is more consistent. Messi gets frustrated when he is playing a physical team that roughs him up a bit early on. He is too weak on the ball as most Argentinians are. Again, I'll take Ronaldo any day. Messi is 90% flash and 10% substance. Heck, I would almost take Xavi over him to be honest. The Messi-hype machine is in full force

You underestimate how much the people who have always supported the program hate the Johnny Come Lately trash that exalted the recently deposed scumbag.

Hat, any predictions about our record next year? You think Martin will eventually turn out to be a better coach than Pearl?

Drama queenish. Cult? Being played? Pied Piper? Dude, it's entertainment and when people spend money, they want to be entertained. When teams win, the entertainment is more enjoyable. Turning it into some sociological school project is funny. You said it was inevitable to end poorly. I guess the Devoe, Houston, Green, Buzz, Oneil departures ended positively? Just as the Majors, Fulmer, Kiffin departures ended on a positive note. I look forward to this upcoming season. I look forward to learning the game of basketball from you as you edumacate us.

Not sure I know how to 'edumacate' anyone. Just saying that not everyone was so enamored with the hype as others were. Urbie did the same stuff at UF, just didn't make the dead man walking moves. It will work for awhile until the rest of the league catches on. You are a good poster - you know the recruiting outside of Harris had started to decline.

The TBA cavern needed some life and MH brought the circus to town. It worked for a time. Now it's time to get serious and build the program the right way. Closing your eyes while the players and coaches do wrong things is not the way to do that.

No way! There is a difference between being a great soccer player and being a great goal scorer. You are only mentioning the latter
I'm sure people are going to be annoyed with this becoming a soccer debate, but I have to respond. Cristiano may have a better skill set, but it's really hard to argue he's a better player at this point.

Clearly. I've seen more tolerance for pedophiles. And I started watching Tennessee basketball in 1987 at Stokely.

THe Xavi bit was just so you know that I am not a Real fan. I am not a Barca hater either. Messi is just not what the world thinks of him IMO. Mess=Becks as far as media hype is concerned. Messi can score when given the opportunity. Becks had his strength(solitary for a reason) too in his ability to make things happen off set plays. Both have major weaknesses in their game and neither were the 2nd coming of Pele although the media sure would like to tell you they are/were in their individual prime

I like Real more than Barcelona. I wanted them to win yesterday. Doesn't change anything though. Messi is considered the best player in the world, because it's true. I'd love to continue the debate but let's redirect to the soccer thread in the other sports forum if you don't mind.

soccer thread link if you want

Fair enough, but I'd take Urby's 2 NC's in a heartbeat, even if it was time to move on. Life is a cycle and sports runs on a shorter one, except for just a handful of fb and bb programs. I'm still not sure about recruiting declining because basketball is a different bird. One good pg can make a team of subpar players better and one bad pg can make good players look bad. It's about the system and filling needs for that system. That's where BP screwed up the last couple of years. We didn't need more slashers in a non slashing focused offense. We needed distributors, defenders and shooters.

Good post.

Oh, look. Another whiny, doomsday predicting Pearlophile. I'm really going to miss having you imbeciles at the game chanting "Broooooooooce" every 10 seconds and screaming "Shoot thu three, Skilur!" all the time.

i laughed at the last part for a solid 10 min

That pretty much ends the argument.

No it doesn't. With the capacity of TBA, we should always always be in the top 10* of attendance, even when we're horrendous. There are only like 5-6 other (college) basketball arenas that big.

*In fact, I don't believe we've ever been outside the top 20 at TBA.

The fact that we were in the top 10 in attendance when Wade Houston was coach suggests we have a fanbase willing to support its team. That's what I was getting at.

The more telling numbers would be capacity percentage. I'm not gonna look those up -- though they wouldn't be hard to look up and maybe I'll get motivated later and look them up...or maybe not -- but I'm fairly certain they would paint a slightly different picture about the supportiveness* of our fanbase.

*Not sure if this is a word

I'm not arguing that we have a Kentuckyesque fanbase. I'm simply saying that it's somewhat impressive to rank in the top 10 in attendance when you have one of the worst head coaches in SEC history at the helm. I would think that was impressive if the games were played at Neyland Stadium.

I could do without the 'AA problems myself:)...but I dont see anything wrong with showing school spirit.

Havent been on VN long enough to know...so was it the bodypainting incedent or the 'AA probs when you started calling coach Pearl "clown",ect...?

The body paint was just plain stupid.

The worst year of the 4 was still 60 percent plus.

It's not like Syracuse fills the Carrier Dome all the time. Georgetown, for an example, usually has scores of empty seats at the Verizon Center. I don't see either of them struggling to recruit.

Awesome. A "true fan" thread.

Trying to associate the recent increase in attendance to being a "pearlofile" is near brain dead level logic. People are going to show up for a winning product regardless of the coach. If they compete for championships with an exciting team, attendance will be good. If they suck, so will attendance. It's real simple.

This was a lame thread to take another shot at Pearl. Some people just need to let it go.
