What are the "competative disadvantages"

Mainly finances. Current reserve funds, short term revenue, percentage of money going from the ad to academics, and some academic requirements on athletes. Throw in the buyouts and its gonna be interesting. The big boosters are gonna have to pony up.

iirc hart specificly said academic and financial disadvantages that have been around for a while but they are being eliminated.

He said they have also been issues for awhile. I wonder if Fulmer had one hand tied behind his back. After he was let go he did say Tennessee had internal issues.

I don't think this is what he meant. Our Academics are on par with the rest of the league.

Not competitively academically, rather the academic side of the University has too much pull on the athletic side of things.

As was said, we have a 1.9 million reserve set aside, while other schools have a 50+ million reserve. Those big time schools have athletic departments that are completely separate from the academic side of things.

He meant that our academic requirements are not the same as the elite in the SEC. The requirements started going up toward the end of Fulmers days.

Translation: Cheek will no longer stick his nose in the athletic part of the university. Either by completely independent Athletic Dept. or Cheek's being let go.
