What are the "competative disadvantages"

Having a real long skinny state border, with the primary state school located at one end of the state. Logistical nightmare.

We need to relocate the football team to the UT - Space Institute. Much more centrally located.

That Hart spoke of?

Academics are one that is significant. I mentioned this a few weeks ago and had several replies from people who felt the university shouldn't do anything to change/lower the entrance requirements for freshmen.

It sounds possible that Hart may have been able to get this addressed moving forward. Would be tremendous if he has IMO.

Mainly finances. Current reserve funds, short term revenue, percentage of money going from the ad to academics, and some academic requirements on athletes. Throw in the buyouts and its gonna be interesting. The big boosters are gonna have to pony up.

And they will!

So our standards are higher than Ga, bammer, Florida?

Having the Titans puts us at a disadvantage.

The best way to stop the bammer boys? Put a NFL team in Birmingham.

It is a huge distraction for the fan base. Especially during the lean years

Not wearing all orange.

Seriously, I think that statement was designed to perk up the ears of donors. Donors typically ask, 'how can my money help/will it help/what will get us there?' and so on. They give most when they think something is within reach if only we had the cash -- basically, when they think giving will matter.

Hart just created a scenario in which donors are going to want to call him and ask those questions and if they're calling him that means they're more likely to give than if he's calling them. THAT is the psychology of fundraising.

If you keep reading OregonVol's posts, then be prepared to have mind blown on a regular basis....

It's not just him though...a fairly sizable group of posters on here talk about this garbage. "Cheek is a Gator." "Hart is a Bama fan." It's just such a stupid line of thinking'''I have no idea how it persists.

Cheek spent 34 years at Florida. Then he shows up here four years ago, and we have been going downhill ever since. It that a coincidence? Perhaps? But I do see how people might question his loyalty

Only idiots would raise a question as to his loyalty. It's stupid as all ****ing hell. Do you really think Cheek is going to come here and jeopardize his job just to sabotage us? Get the **** out with that stupidity.

Our decline started well before 4 years ago.

Eh, relax. I was mostly joking around. Until Hart does something very positive for our athletic program, I'm going to continue to needle him. The main point is, regardless of allegiances, for our AD to get up at a press conference, while he is looking for a new coach and to start talking about "competitive disadvantages" is a sign that maybe our AD isn't going to be doing such a great job selling Tennessee to our coaching prospects.

Yep - and that's only from an athletic department perspective. Any prospective head coach would consider in total:

1 - finances
2 - tough to recruit for a variety of reasons (lack of in-state talent, the program is seen as an irrelevant program in the eyes of many recruits unless you start winning immediately)
3 - on defense, there is not upper eschelon SEC-level talent, and your most talented players on offense might leave for the NFL

On the plus side, there is a lot of tradition and the facilities are top notch.

People on here need to take off the orange colored glasses. Prospective coaches aren't going to come here "just because it's Tennessee." At the moment, Tennessee isn't really the greatest job. Let's face facts.

I don't think that.

I said, I knew some people on here who might think that.

... general overall lack of HS talent in home state.

The state of Oregon has two Rivals 4 stars and six 3 stars. The rest of their prospects are 2 stars or unranked. They will be lucky to have 15 FBS signees.

Tennessee has one 5 star, eight 4 stars, nineteen 3 stars.

Somehow Oregon manages to overcome their general lack of HS talent in the home state.

It isn't impossible to recruit if you don't have in-state talent; just tougher. One of the reasons Kelly is such a great coach is because he's able to do that.

I've never been there, but I'm assuming Eugene, Oregon isn't exactly the most happening place either for an 18-year-old kid, which makes it even more impressive.
