What are your expectations for Jalen Hurd this year?

He could be correct. Don't diss him because his opinion is different.

Yes, I'd diss anyone on these threads that is already claiming injuries that have not happened to any of our players.

And you call yourselves Vol fans... a real special kind of stupid is what the **** you are.

I predict he will break the NCAA single season rushing record - in his first game.

By game 7 he will become President - of the world.

Anything less and he did not give his all for Tennessee.

But really - I think 400 - 600 yards is reasonable.
I can see 5 yards a clip for him with more stat padding at some of our weaker opponents. Like Alabama. haha

I think the 400-600 yards sounds about right. He may get some decent TDs as Butch may use him close to goal line situations.

Jalen will be as good or as disappointing as is his OLine, nothing less, nothing more. I have my concerns on OLine if any of the starters get hurt as 2nd team has problems at this point.

This! And solid QB play with a threat of a passing game helps too.

Injuries will plague him his freshman year. Maybe get 500 yards and 3 TDs. I don't expect more. The learning curve from middle Tennessee HS football to the SEC is huge.

Go off and crawl in a hole. He asked for expectations and you throw out injuries? Just say he wont be good, dont throw bad juju on the kid... :finger3:

Debbie Downer here. I predict a spotty career for the kid the whole time at UT. Injured half the time. When he isn't injured, he looks great. Has a few key drops from the shoulder getting hit. I pray I'm wrong but until this curse is lifted, that would be par for the course.

I don't have any expectations for him...he's coming off of a surgery and the SEC isn't TN high school football

THIS! He's a frosh. So I for one am not going to be one of those fans who projects my own expectations on the kid. Then whine and complain of him being a bust if he doesn't play up to those expectations. All on account of his playing like a freshman in the SEC on a team with an OL that's beyond being just questionable. What I will do is watch him play, hope he does very well, and gets the experience, mental toughness, and self-expectations for being RB#1 when Lane leaves.

I, like many, think Hurd could be the best back we've had in quite some time. Everything I've seen suggests he's a pretty tough kid. More importantly, he's fast. I wouldn't be surprised if his ypa is pretty high because he is a threat to break it long every time he touches the ball. I think Butch said he still had some work to do before he would realize his potential at this level but I think Gillespie could be our best position coach so we're probably good there.

Our offense favors the run and that has been the case much of Butch & Bajakian's career, at CMU, Cincinnati, and last year with us. Last year Neal had 215 carries and Lane had 101, all in 12 games. We should have at least one extra game this year and we may have more freshmen on defense than is comfortable so we may even run a bit more than normal. I'm figuring 520 rushes for the year for the team and the two primary backs get 70% of the carries. I don't think Lane can make it through a full season without some recovery time so I think Hurd may have at least 1/2 the carries of the primary backs for the full season. I think he'll have a high average, around 6.25 ypa.

[(520*0.7)/2]*6.25 = 1,138 yards rushing with 12 TD's 3 Fumbles,
34 receptions and 4 TD's receiving.

It'll be the toughest year of Jalen's life in a physical sense because there will certainly be a number of times when he's stopped for no gain. That happens when the defense loads the box on you and it'll also be the reason, imo, why he only edges Malone by less than 200 on the year for the lead in all-purpose yards. jmo. :)

The history of our offense between run and pass:

Great stat. I know I was surprised to see we actually ran the least amount of plays last year.

With a brand new Oline my guess on Hurd is not as high, but I've very hopeful!

But he is a EE which should help a lot.

It doesn't help until he gets on the field with SEC talent at every position against him. Playing our D in practice is not the same. Especially with our D in the shape it currently is in. He will need at least his freshman year to learn and to get "taught". Plus the weight room and S&C coach for a year will help. He needs to get physically and mentally tough for the beating he will take.

While this is a common opinion, think back to some of the recent better UT RB's. Hardesy had a great senior season with a couple of 260 lb walk ons getting alot of snaps in the OL. Henry and Lewis just flat made their own holes at times almost refusing to be tackled. Now if the OL is a sieve and the RB is getting nailed 3 yards in the backfield then it's going to be a long season on Rocky Top.

Powerful RB's who can make one cut and lower their shoulder pads tend to perform well in the SEC. Those that dance around and continually attempt to bump things outside tend to struggle with the speed of SEC defenses. What type of runner will Hurd be?

I think Lane has shown to be a one cut and go type already and if he stays healthy he will be hard to steal too many carries from IMHO.

When did Lane become this juggernaut?...and why wasn't it last season?

Hurds was injured for his senior year of high school. It's more likely that he'll get hurt, than him running for 6.25 yards a carry.

He beasted out with a huge workload his junior year...and now he has a stabilized shoulder. :matrix:

Realistic expectations? Moderation? Won't win the Heisman this year? Psssshhh. This is the offseason. He's going to be QB before Utah State. Some sort of freakishly talented Quarter-running back.

He'll set records if we can keep him at one position. :p

I expect him to be in the classroom when he's suppose to be and make the grades he needs to make. I expect him to give his all while on the football field, whether it be practice or game. I expect him to keep his nose clean and represent the Unversity of Tennessee proudly. I expect him to give us much enjoyment watching him play for the big orange.
