I, like many, think Hurd could be the best back we've had in quite some time. Everything I've seen suggests he's a pretty tough kid. More importantly, he's fast. I wouldn't be surprised if his ypa is pretty high because he is a threat to break it long every time he touches the ball. I think Butch said he still had some work to do before he would realize his potential at this level but I think Gillespie could be our best position coach so we're probably good there.
Our offense favors the run and that has been the case much of Butch & Bajakian's career, at CMU, Cincinnati, and last year with us. Last year Neal had 215 carries and Lane had 101, all in 12 games. We should have at least one extra game this year and we may have more freshmen on defense than is comfortable so we may even run a bit more than normal. I'm figuring 520 rushes for the year for the team and the two primary backs get 70% of the carries. I don't think Lane can make it through a full season without some recovery time so I think Hurd may have at least 1/2 the carries of the primary backs for the full season. I think he'll have a high average, around 6.25 ypa.
[(520*0.7)/2]*6.25 = 1,138 yards rushing with 12 TD's 3 Fumbles,
34 receptions and 4 TD's receiving.
It'll be the toughest year of Jalen's life in a physical sense because there will certainly be a number of times when he's stopped for no gain. That happens when the defense loads the box on you and it'll also be the reason, imo, why he only edges Malone by less than 200 on the year for the lead in all-purpose yards. jmo.
