What Charlie Strong Brings to UT

Well, let's start with this: Charlie Strong was the Defensive Coordinator for the 2006 Florida Gators, a team that played Ohio State for the BCS Championship. Ohio State had a Heisman-winning quarterback and was favored by a touchdown.

Florida won by 27, and held Ohio State to 82 yards of total offense.

Is that anything you could get behind?

That's what I'm talking about! People are missing the coach for the conference. Look at what he did in the SEC! UT isn't in the Big East. Strong will do great things at UT!

Even if you don't like this hire you have to be excited because he would have to try REALLY hard to be worse than Dooley.

I see this repeatedly on here... What the heck does it matter that he's better than Dooley? That means squat. Am I supposed to get excited that he may be better than the worst hire in UT's history and maybe in the entire SEC? Yippee.

How in the heck are you able to start a thread with only 36 post.

Anyways we aren't neccessarily sure this is the hire. I just hope he works better than Dooley.

I will always support the Vols and the coaching choices, even when I would prefer someone else. However, there needs to be some minimal definition of success.

* consecutive 8 win seasons
AND
* consecutive top 10 recruiting classes
AND
* no recruiting violations

You're right. Urban Meyer totally ran that defense.

Im not saying he did or didn't.

Im just saying that you can't take another head coaches record and apply it to yours because you got a head coaching job.

Now if you want to compare his UL team's defense against SEC caliber schools im good with that.

I do not know what kind of analysis that was, but a pretty weak one. Western Kentucky or Louisville did not play an SEC schedule. Also, just because he does well in the Big East does not always translate to the SEC.

I think this will be an okay three years, nothing really to get excited about. I guess I'll start making the flyers, "Gruden 2015."

"Avoid the rush! Be dumb now!"

So you saying it was Strong (DC) and not Urban Myer (HC)?

But

You are saying that it will be the HC and not the DC if we have a good D?

Wow, you fail logic....badly. Meyer was the OC/HC and Strong was the DC. Of course, Strong gets primary credit for the D and would as the HC as long as he was DC/HC.

I'm not sure you grasp how this "coaching" thing works.

Ok lets say we have the best Def. head coach in football.

Lets also say Sal is his Def Coord.

We have the # 10 ranked defense in all of football

Does that make Sal a good fit for the Tennessee job?

I was hoping CCS would bring some recruits with him if indeed he's announced tomorrow. Looked over at Rivals to see who they had committed. Louisville is ranked#71 in the county. None are more then a 3*. Now I'm no recruiting expert but looking at their list I am not getting warm and fuzzy.

Yeah, Randy Shannon was a good head coach as well..
:good!:

Seems I remember reading this same kinda stuff, when Florida hired Will muskrat!!!! Well that hire turned out pretty good for them so far? I say, if he is the HC we wait and see what he does on the field before we judge him?? And that is "IF" he is the next HC at UT..

I'm sure Florida will really be scared of Strong when they beat Louisville by 40.

Strong will bring the pain to the East. Recruits are about to come calling again.

Exciting times, if he is hired, imo.

more 6 - 6, 7 - 5 seasons if Strong is hired.

I like what Arky did. they reached out and took who they wanted.

Seems like Hart put a open position for coach. No great coaches required

So he's going to do worse at UT than he did at UofL with better talent? Makes sense.

Fine, I'll play.

Let's say we have the best defensive mind in the country for a head coach.

That guy doesn't hire Sal as his DC. If he does, he doesn't keep him there long. In fact, what he probably does is keep him as a position coach -- Linebackers, maybe. I'm just spitballing.

And if by some miracle he does keep him there, his team doesn't win a national championship, and doesn't build an utterly dominant defense.

But Florida did both those things. And if you think that was not only 100% Urban Meyer -- not traditionally known as a defensive guy -- but that Urban masterminded that defense in spite of the fact that Charlie Strong was utterly inept at his job...

Well, that seems unlikely to me.

More mediocrity and another high dollar buyout leaving UT broke and searching for another HC in 3 years.

You can't compare a Big East team to one from the SEC, even a Tennessee. Of course Florida is going to steamroll, but that will not be indicative of what Strong can offer UT. Strong will immediately produce a stout defense for us next year.

Apples and oranges, man.
