Fine, I'll play.

Let's say we have the best defensive mind in the country for a head coach.

That guy doesn't hire Sal as his DC. If he does, he doesn't keep him there long. In fact, what he probably does is keep him as a position coach -- Linebackers, maybe. I'm just spitballing.

And if by some miracle he does keep him there, his team doesn't win a national championship, and doesn't build an utterly dominant defense.

But Florida did both those things. And if you think that was not only 100% Urban Meyer -- not traditionally known as a defensive guy -- but that Urban masterminded that defense in spite of the fact that Charlie Strong was utterly inept at his job...

Well, that seems unlikely to me.

If if if

I hope he does well

I am just saying you can't sit here and tell me that Urban Myer didn't have ANYTHING to do with the game plan against OSU.

IT IS THE HEAD COACHES TEAM

Out of Strong, Fisher, Gundy, and Fedora, I'd take Strong. Not my first choice, but I can get behind it.

Yeah "if if if" -- you posed a hypothetical question, so you're gonna get ifs. That's how hypothetical questions work.

Nobody said Urb had nothing to do with that gameplan. Really. But it's unreasonable to think the Florida became a dominant defensive team in spite of their defensive coordinator. And that's the line you're selling. Barring some unusual circumstances, a great defense is usually attributable to a great DC.

What's so hard about that?

Saban lost to Louisiana-somebody.

Gary Patterson has lost to Wyoming.

Gundy lost to Iowa State or some other such school that he should have beat to play in the national championship.

Gruden got fired for performance in the NFL, after winning a super bowl.

Every coach who has any sort of record has lost to teams that they should have beaten. It happens. The key to making any sort of decision like this, is to look at the body of work. Look at both recruiting and the wins/loss in Strong's three years at the powerhouse of UL and the three years before he got there. There is a sizable bump in both. Not perfect to be sure, but he is working with a Pinto. This is a guy who could take the reigns of a UT program ready for an effective driver. I think he will prove to be more than capable.

Care to look up how many people on that defense are playing in the NFL?

Did he recruit those guys as well?

HINT: They had 15 players drafted on Defense from 2006- 2010

8 of those players were in the first 3 rounds

5 in the top 2 rounds

3 first rounders

Man, that gets me even more excited about Strong! His record indicates that he recruits great players and develops their talent! Awesome!

Wait. What was your point again?

Yeah Urban Myer can't recruit

Wait, Strong won 2 National Championships by himself.

I can't see why Strong didn't get picked up by OSU last year instead of UM.

Oh wait, thats right, He wasn't the head coach.

I've heard people said Strong hasn't gotten alot of great talent at Louisville because it's a hard place to recruit. Given that Tennessee isn't a bed of 4 and 5 start recruits, what makes people believe he can recruit at UT?

He may be able to, but the argument that he couldn't pull a bunch of top recruits to Lou makes me wonder.

Who are you talking to? I didn't say any of that.

But if you're wondering whether he can cut it as a head coach, you probably ought to check Coach Strong's daytimer and see what he's doing on January 2, 2013.

Or does Urban Meyer somehow get credit for Louisville going to the Sugar Bowl, too?

Gators won't be happy if Vols hire Charlie Strong. He has 33 Florida players on his Louisville roster. And that's without an SEC logo.

Better yet I'll just check the only schedule that matters..

The Strength of Schedule!!

Louisville Football - Cardinals News, Scores, Videos - College Football - ESPN

37th in points against
23.8 points per game against this schedule
also, 100th in rushing

Now if you look the Strength of schedule (at mid season when Rutgers was undefeated) is: 62

College Football Strength of Schedule Preseason 2012 - College Football Universe

Something interesting I've come across. Of Strongs losses he's only been beat by more than 7 points twice, at Pitt in 2010 (20-3) and at Cuse in 2012 (45-26). Average margin of loss is 7.7. That's pretty impressive.
