What exactly does Butch Jones get?

My perception of Georgia is probably colored by the facts that: (a) I was at UT from 1996 through 2000, which was a time during which Georgia was literally an afterthought; and (b) while I love to hate David Green and David Pollack, even Georgia's recent revival has been largely forgettable. We took some pretty modest teams and beat the silver britches off the Dawgs. Historically, we have owned Georgia.

South Carolina is only a concern insofar as we have made them look respectable in recent years. But Spurrier is old, and he will not be there forever, and even while he is, we should get back to beating the Gamecocks regularly.

The monkeys on UT's back are clearly Alabama and Florida. Florida is a school that we lose to even when we are better than they are, and I hate them for it, among other things. Alabama I just hate. Someone needs to put a stop to their nonsense.

Vanderbilt is a team that has clawed its way up somehow, and they need to have the dignity knocked back out of them. Scoff if you want, but trying to make Vanderbilt irrelevant again will be an important part of the process in Knoxville.

Agree with the entire post. Especially the bold.

when did Vanderbilt become relevant, who cares what their reord was last year. They beat nobody of importance

They became relevant after beating TN and going bowling.

I get that we have sucked for a few years, but I still consider us important.

so they go to the music city bowl & beat a lousy UT team coached by one of the worst coaches in UT history & this makes them relevant

Not discounting the fact that they beat us soundly, Vanderbilt's 9-4 record last year epitomized the product of a "smoke-and-mirrors" schedule. They narrowly beat a Missouri team that lost its starting quarterback early in the game and were fortunate enough to catch Auburn at a historically bad point in their program.

The problem with Vandy, putting Franklin's recent success aside for the moment, is that the humiliation of losing to them, however infrequently it may occur, is substantially greater than the joy derived from beating even Alabama or Florida. For Vanderbilt to actually beat us, a couple of things typically have to occur: (1) they have to have the best quarterback in the conference (or at least a senior QB, a la Whit Taylor in 1982 and Jay Cutler in 2005); and (2) there has to be a convergence between a "valley" in Tennessee football fortunes and a "peak" in those of the Commodes.

The series, for decades, has gone one of two ways: (1) we come out motivated and on fire and beat the unholy excrement out of VU or (2) we come out uninspired, sleepwalk our way through the game and it turns into a 4th-quarter nail-biter. There just aren't many games recently that have been decided by, say, 10-14 points. The best way to find ourselves in more of those nailbiters, some of which inevitably become losses, is to completely discount them as a rival.

The latter stance would seem to be what smokey0625 is advocating. And, yes, the same point holds true with respect to Kentucky; we are, for them, the equivalent of an instate rival in football. When Tennessee is playing to the standards that are historically typical of our program, we often have succeeded in somnambulating our way to victory against these perennial cellar-dwellers; it is not an attitude we can afford now.

Every SEC team we play is relevant to me right now. Especially those that beat us last year, whatever the "reasons" were.

What CBJ gets is the reality of life.

If you are in a position of leadership, no matter what that position is, your success is almost solely dependent your ability to build relationships with other people. You can not run any enterprise of size without a lot of people in your camp.

What CBJ gets is that in life, people are either on your side, or they are not. While I don't think his practices are fake, I do believe that they are very calculated.

He knows that:
  • a good relationship with the media means better press.
  • a good relationship with the former players means good PR
  • a good relationship with the current players means a little more effort when you really need it
  • a good relationship with the faculty could help keep a player here and there on the roster
  • a good relationship with the fan base can add a few decibels to to the stadium on Saturdays

The list can go on and on. Recruiting, hiring assistants, etc. It's just part of the formula for success.

That it is all about winning Championships. In everything the team does, they should be champions at doing it. Football, practice, school, family, community, even taking a pee. They should approach everything they do with the mentality of being the best at it.

No kidding. It hardly matters what anyone's opinion is concerning the quality of Vanderbilt's nine-win season. Until UT demonstrates that it was just an freak occurrence, Vanderbilt has two or three big objective facts on their side: (1) beating UT in 2012; (2) winning nine games in 2012; and (3) winning a bowl game in 2012. They also have the ear of the national media, who like a good David vs. Goliath story (which Vandy vs. UT is). I also see evidence in the recruiting forum of quality recruits taking at least a passing interest in Vanderbilt. So, while some UT fans may think they have a compelling argument about why Vandy doesn't matter, I'd much rather watch the Vols pound the Commodores into the ground for a few years in a row. If UT can do that, there will be no need to argue, and all will be right with the world.

I think his point is, he doesn't care about Vandy just FL, GA and Bama.

So we beat all three and end up tied in wins with GA and FL and only have Vandy and KY left. GA has Tech and FL has the Noles.

Bet he cares then. Haha.

I care, but its not a season focus. I am not focused on us beating Vandy. If we are focused on beating Vandy in the spring then we are fighting for last place.

To the moron who explained how sports work. You're stupid.

You're trying too hard. Simmer down. I think someone may be pushing your buttons.

I think if you worked on your reading comprehension skills and got a little exercise you might be less angry all the time. Seriously, this can't be healthy for you. Go hit the weight room or something. There have to be more productive ways to vent your frustrations than railing against a guy just because he said that he wants the Vols to pound the snot out of Bama, Florida and Vanderbilt. I mean, it's not exactly a controversial position.

again, ff posters make a big deal out of everything. 15 pages later and people are still arguing if Butch gets it or not.

I understand and agree with ur pt, but don't forget how Dooley taught them how to shower properly or how u would say "like champions". He got bashed for it and continues too.

We'll never forget the showering...you must remember history or be doomed to repeat it.

I don't hate Dooley like many on here. No doubt he was in over his head and for what ever reason he thought Sal was a good hire and changing to a complex 3-4 defense while on the hot seat totally baffles me. Butch on the other hand has a proven winning track record, although in a lesser conference.

Butch gets:

1) A very nice paycheck.

2) To wear cool UT sportswear.

3) To run through the Power T on Saturdays in the greatest stadium in the country.

4) To raise his children in the Great Smokey Mountains.

That's just to name a few things the he "gets". He gets a lot.

I think what is happening is....Butch is showing us "What he gives" in return.

Pretty much everything Dooley didnt when it comes to rebuilding a top notch successful program. Too much to catalog here. With the exception of a few Dooley apologists on here, we all know the list. He's doing everything right at the moment.
