Great post, Josh. I also agree with the poster who says the Internet has made us all a little bit colder and far more quick to criticize. I remember many years ago living in Chicago and reading the Chicago newspapers critiques of sports teams which were very negative. I thought overly so. Nowadays being overly negative appears to be common practice on every level down to little league football.
To me, there are no moral victories because I expect to win them all. I think Butch knows exactly what he's gotten himself into. His comment about a passionate fan base is inclusive of those who care very much about Tennessee as well as the people we refer to on here as negavols. We are 5 games into a season where we speculated that we would be fortunate to win half our games. It is another rebuilding year but with a lot more hope than last year because we expected it to be Dooley's last. And it was. And, Lord willing, Butch can keep the incredible recruiting class together to come in next year and build on what is happening now.
When I think about college football players, I think about each of them and their commitment to the game. Sure they are getting a "free ride" but along with that ride comes some mighty high expectations. As with anything in life, there are great rewards and great risks. What I expect out of my team is "giving their all for Tennessee" each and every game. That does not mean winning every game but it does mean fighting to win every game. And because of that, it is my personal policy not to get on the back of a 17-21 year old who is doing as best he can to play a game. He's wearing Orange so he is part of the family. Brick by Brick, Rise to the Top, GBO, Beat them on'ry, flea infested dawgs!
