What oil(and filter) do you use?

I want to know how often folks are checking their oil levels. I check at every other fill up. Turbos tend to burn a decent amount of oil, so I like to keep on top of it.

I have a turbo but my level never changes so I hardly ever check it

Like a lot of things there are "higher end" models of filters. I'd guess that if one were diligent in their changes a "normal" Fram would probably (in fact I'm sure does for a crapload of people) but look into Fram's Xtended Guard before just trashing all things Fram. A quick Google check and you'll see that it's actually pretty highly regarded.

I wasn't trying to say all Fram are garbage, just that oil filters do fail. Really I just like pointing out whenever cc is wrong about something. I focused on Fram, because that was the specific brand he referenced.

IIRC, Fram makes the OEM filters for a lot of manufacturers and relabels them.

Valvoline Maxlife (synthetic blend) and K&N filter every 3500 miles or so. The filters are pricey, but it's worth it just for the weld nut.

I used to buy K&N for specifically that reason. Oil filter wrenches are awful. The one size fits all ones never work. If you don't have the nut, my other go to options are a makeshift band wrench (usually an old belt) or a screwdriver hammered through the filter (messy).

How freakin tight are you guys screwing your filters on? I've never had difficulty removing a filter.

Hand tighten that sumbich as tight as you can, then you should have to use a wrench to remove it.

I go hand tight. Never had an issue with any car I've ever had. They've almost all been Hondas though.

cc seems to be the only irrational poster in the thread imo. Should be expected.

Says the man that drives a golf ball 400 yards with his "easy" swing. Yea I'm irrational for saying an oil filter is an oil filter as long as it does what it's suppose to.

I have always been told and seen my guys here in the shop do it where once the filter is hand tight you go half a turn passed that.

This. Only exception is diesels. I snug them up 1-1 1/2 turns past hand tight.

And ftr Fram does suck. Having worked in the industry (GM tech) for years then maintaining all my own equipment. You can not nor should you put to much trust in them

And if you own a GM product you should really use delco filters only. They have a check valve in them to keep oil at the top of the engine so on cold start ups they are immediately lubed to prevent failure of engine components

What kind of car?

Generally turbo's don't cause more oil consumption if oil is not allowed to break down.

Btw even if you change your oil. Park car for 6 months. It has to be changed again.

Engine oil shelf life is only 6 months as a general rule. (Use to be only 3 months)

I only hand tighten. Never had a problem in 12+ years. I crank the crap outta it though
