What Other Message Boards Are Saying (Kent State Pre Game Edition)

Let them get their cash somewhere else. I fail to see any value in playing a Q4 teams, especially one ranked #134 in FPI. Iron sharpens iron and Kent State ain't iron...more like aluminum. Want to get ready for SEC play then play a Q2 or Q3 team, at least they don't drive your sor/sos down.

The 3 patsies, one marque NC game and SEC schedule never kept Bama, Georgia or LSU from winning titles...

We already have played one FCS team this year (Chatt) so couldn't add another. Other than MTSU, no other in state patsy to schedule....
Is there a reason why the Vols don’t play Tennessee State? In-state FCS school. I can see playing UT-Martin and UT-Chattanooga. But AP isn’t part of the UT system (I’m using them since we played them recently).

Just curious.

Hopefully we actually do pull the starters after one quarter and let the backups play the whole time. It’s the last time until late November that a lot of them will have a chance to see the field.

And then let the walkons play the entire fourth quarter. This’ll be their only chance all year to get snaps.
They should let me play too. This is the only chance I will ever get to grace the field before I die.

I dont know why they dont. Many times TSU played the Southern Heritage Classic the weekend before Florida game so that might explain it since that was usually a buy game weekend for us.....

Akron 2022. Lost Cedric Tillman for the season in a 63-6 Vol W over a Akron team ranked #130. Injuries happen but to lose Ced in a game against a #130 opponent isn't like losing him if you're playing a T60 team.

Now we have Kent #133 up in a game where I see absolutely no value. I don't like these types of opponents whatsoever. It would be OK with me if we never played a FCS or a FBS ranked out of T60 ever again.

Play the starters for 1Q, season ticket holders would be pissed, drive all that way then there's no Sampson, no Nico, no Pearce that's BS.

The CFP Committee considers Strength of Schedule in their rankings. Imagine getting passed over for the 12-T because the other teams SOS was better because we #133. No thanks. Schedule better opponents,

PRINCIPLES

The committee will select the teams using a process that distinguishes among otherwise comparable teams by considering:
  • Strength of schedule,
  • Head-to-head competition,
  • Comparative outcomes of common opponents (without incenting margin of victory), and,
  • Other relevant factors such as unavailability of key players and coaches that may have affected a team’s performance during the season or likely will affect its postseason performance.
What's the difference between losing a guy against Kent State vs losing a guy against Alabama? Either way you lose a guy.

Was once behind a car from Ohio in Cades Cove. At every tree that was by itself, they would stop and take a picture of it. My dad told me they didn't have many trees up there.
Comparatively not as many trees up here for sure. Trees along the property lines and fencerows, much like Tennessee farmland, only the fields tend to be much, much bigger. Ohio is part of the great forest that stretch(es/ed) from the Atlantic coast to the Mississippi. There are some big, flat open areas along I-71 and elsewhere, but it certainly ain’t Kansas.

Eastern part of the state is like you took Monroe County and just copy pasted it a hundred times over. Lots of rolling hills and fall leaf color that rivals East TN. Can’t beat the Smokies though.

Yep you lose a player either way. To me games against FCS/FBS Q4 teams have little or no value whereas ALL SEC games have value and games against Q2-Q3 better value. Lost Webb before SEC play, lost Tillman before SEC play. To lose guys in games with no value is, at least to me the bigger loss. I see a difference, if you don't then you don't. jmo

I learned something about this Vols team against NC State, I didn't learn anything by playing UTC and not likely to learn anything from the Kent State game.

tOSU played Arkon and paid them $600K, we're paying Kent $1.35M.
$1.35 M equates to; 27,000 tickets sold at $50 each, 15,882 tickets sold at $85 each. Looking at Stub Hub for reference the prices range from $50 to $85 each.

One can assume that the opposing fans will make up a large sum of the tickets sold money that will go back to the visiting team.

Not sure what Kent State's ticket allotment is or what they sold but it isn't likely between the 2 numbers you stated. I doubt Kent State travels well.

From the 8th

Ticket prices start at $95 on Vivid Seats, $105 on SeatGeek, $106 on StubHub and $119 on Ticketmaster for upper level seats, plus fees, which vary by vendor. And they start at $115 on TickPick, including fees.

Lower bowl tickets start at $114 on Vivid Seats, $119 on Ticketmaster, $130 on SeatGeek and $135 on StubHub, plus fees. And they start at $152 on TickPick, including fees.

I feel sorry for our fans, their fans, their team...we should not be playing teams like this
These games illustrate why the B1G and SEC should break away from the rest of college football and only play quality teams.

Kent State vs UT isn't good TV for most people and good TV leads to big TV deals.

It's arguable that Rutgers vs UT isn't good TV either but likely much better than Kent State for drawing eyeballs.

Schools need to treat football as the big business it is and maximize the schedule toward games that provide good TV entertainment.

There's a reason beyond just league issues why NFL teams don't schedule USFL teams. It would be really bad TV.

Yep that works for me too.. Can't wait until we are playing a 9 game SEC schedule. Eliminate FCS opponents. Play a quality schedule, that's all I want to see.

Eventually it's just bad for business to play cupcakes. What makes the successful pro sports successful is parity and a story line.

Clark in the WNBA most recently. Bird and Magic. Air Jordan. Brady. Kelce Bros.

The high level college sports programs, to get to the next level (read: more $$$$,) need to work on marketing so there aren't "I'm not watching them kill another Noname U team" and toward each UT game having some meat, some interest beyond just the school's fanbase.

It's the entertainment business. To be successful it needs to be more interesting than...... what's the betting line now...... 50 points? C'mon.
