What was actually going on with our AD?

I remember Illinois hired Lovie Smith. Lovie was 50 years old, Super Bowl winning coach, a minority, big salary, and brought his son along as an assistant. Ticket sales immediately shot up and there were great expectations. In 5 years his best season was 6-6, overall something like 15-35, his last season when he was fired he was 2-10.

So, how in the world does the UNC athletics director go out and hire Bill Belichick in a week?

What exactly were we doing when we hired Dooley…….Jones……Schianoooope……Pruitt? Hell, at one point I was even thinking ol Phil was about to get his job back.

For the record, I’m perfectly happy and content with what Coach Josh has done for the Vols. Just blown away that they were able to pull that off at UNC. Do we have an official list of coaches we interviewed since 2008? Surely none of them were anywhere close to as high profile as Belichick….
Belechick has a history at UNC his dad coached there.

He’s 72 and desperate to work. He’s got to keep that 27 yr old GF happy also! 😂

Like Deion, Belichick is a gimmick hire. Yes, it will grab headlines. Yes some recruits will be attracted to play for a Superbowl winning coach. But Belichick is 72 years old and his surly ass will not like recruiting high school kids and dealing with NIL/portal drama. Plus Tom Brady aint walking through that door again! This reminds me of when Bill Walsh coached Stanford after retiring from the 49'ers. It'll have a similar impact.
Deion somewhat worked his way up. He didn’t go the whole coordinator route, but did start at the FCS level and has proven he can coach and relate to college age kids. He’s not a great coach, but he’s proven to be solid in this era so far.

This was not a good hire for UNC. Gronk, Brady, and Julian E were on a show absolutely clowning the idea of Belichick coaching in college. Recruiting in the state of NC just got a whole lot easier for us. GBO!

This is like when any HOF player should have retired but gets a 1 year contract based on name and he sucks…. This is that.

If you don't think he can recruit, google an image of his girlfriend.

BTW, I think he is a terrible choice to hire for anything.
I saw that meme, I think she's probably after the greenbacks, and that's the main factor in her "recruitment" there. Football recruits are too no doubt, but all the programs are paying money. There's more competition among thots for well heeled meal tickets.

I'll be surprised if he's there past 3-4 years. There's very few coaches that are successful at both the college and NFL levels. Look at Saban, he's probably the best college football coach of all time...definitely the modern era, and he sucked as an NFL head coach. The rosters and mentality are completely different. There's no way that Belichick, with zero personality, can relate to those 18-19 year old kids today.
It's funny to compare Saban to somebody that has zero personality

Bellichick isn't handling the recruiting and the NIL budget was just quintupled. It's a better hire than many of you think.

Could be proven wrong. Although sure feels like an odd hire to me for both sides. You had Mac Brown who was fired at 73. You now hire Belichick who is 72. If its true that the AD was on the fence I can 100% see why. That is a terrible long term plan for your program. Add that into the fact that who knows if Belichick fully understands what he is stepping into moving back to college. The college game and NFL are two total different animals. This guy is used to having grown men that he wasn't having to be a father figure for. Based on his comments he is going to run it like an NFL program. If you listened to him he basically said there will be no room for the tweeners. You are either going to be NFL bound or not be at UNC. For a place that is not remotely close to being viewed as a football school not sure how that plan works.

Let's see: hired Dooley when Belichick was working towards a Wild Card loss; hired Jones when Belichick was in the middle of an AFC championship game run; hired Pruitt when Belichick was in the middle of 3 straight Super Bowl appearances.

UNC hires him when he's sat on his butt all year. Bit of a difference.

What was Belichick doing at the time? This is a unique situation and maybe... he just wanted to be there?

UT's AD was incompetent but every situation and person is unique.

The history of guys coming from the NFL to college is a mixed bag. Sherman was a very good NFL coach who flopped as a college coach. I think ASU had an NFL coach that flopped. Pete Carroll showed the ability to coach at both levels... but there are no guarantees. And the work is different and probably harder for a college coach... not to mention having to kiss the rears of 17 year old prima donnas.

He's NEVER Coached college and only took it because NO NFL team would hire him. He will never win 10 games

I believe she is 24 and she will fit in fine at the Bars on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

Also, the story I read is she picked him up on a plane and she is not her first Sugar Daddy at her tender age…..

So, for all of those criticizing Bill, I’m sure it take$ a lot of money to keep her up.

I leave out Kiffin because he was a bit of a splash hire, but the only one. And sir, we were desperate people, too…..and we never seemed to land our desperate Belichickish attempts (Gruden?).
Bell boy will be a fish out out of water, recruiting and NCAA. Pipeline to NFL and we see how Gruden turned out.

You are looking at the AD and not the cronies that had control of the AD. The board and the President were dysfunctional.

Tennessee success has always been on raising money and the AD in part, the Athletic Board, and Monies raised in support. With $$$$ from donors those felt they had the say as to day to day business and opns.

We had crappy ADs in the past. Danny White is a SOLID AD so we have no issues there. Not sure why we have this thread to be honest.

Pretty sure they are paying him 10 mill a season right out the gate with no college coaching past right? That’s how they pulled him… also I’m shocked at the move as at 72 to be accepting a head coach position in college football with all the challenges .. if he isn’t 90 after the first season we’ll u can color me surprised.. srry but this ain’t gonna succeed
His girlfriend is 27 lol he is a young 72.
