What was the embarassing, inappropriate chant at UT-Bama game?

the Bama fans were still cheering a considerable amount of time after Coker was down. I know that I'm biased, but having the audacity to do a Bama chant when a 20 year old young man is laying on the field is much more harsh than using the F word in my opinion. I thought our cheer was definitely the wrong response, and Im not trying to be a homer and claim they got what they deserved. But it's just sickening to see fans completely indifferent that there is a young man on the field, especially when no one is aware of the exent of his injury. These kids work so hard to go out there and play their butts off for us every week, most without any promise of an NFL contract. I don't care how much you hate your rival team, there is simply no excuse for such heartless behavior when somebody's young son/grandson/brother/role model is laying out there after sustaining an injury. Imagine people standing around cheering, after someone you love has been hurt in a car crash.

The bama fans were saying, "Ala"..."Bama" back and forth while Coker was down. Then our fans started booing them...the bama fans then stopped...and then the FU bama chants started. At least that's what it sounded like on the television.

I was there and this is exactly how it transpired.

I was there. The Bama fans continued to chant.... but were drowned out by the student section's profane chant.

F U Bama, It was mostly the East side of the stadium.

Just so everybody knows, this chant was not invented last Saturday. It was heard loud and clear against Florida earlier this year.

It is not particularly creative, and I chose not to participate in the chorus, but it did fairly well represent my feelings about the situation at the time.

This is true, but to me (and maybe it's just the accoustics of being surrounded by 106,000 people in a bowl) it seemed like there were many more people in the stadium chanting this than just the student section.

Exactly how I saw it. They didn't shut up until drowned out by the FU chant from sections D,E & F. I don't condone profanity but it was less obcene than the Bammers chanting "Ala-Bama" with an opposing player down.

P.S. Try not to sell your tickets to Bama fans in the future, there was a pipsqueak crimson clad young woman sitting in front of my wife that stood for the entire first five minutes of the first quater waving a Bama pompon until I tapped her on the shoulder and told her to "SIT DOWN". Luckily I was bigger than her Boyfriend.:birgits_giggle:

I'm 100% sure that sections G, H, and I were in on it too. I was "in the dry" above the students in section G. I'm not pointing fingers at these particular sections. I'm just trying to show that it was a larger group than some may have initially thought. :peace2:

i am a student and i was in section G, i was chanting it along with 85% of the people around me. Normally i wouldn't chant that, i didnt in the florida game, but there were Bama fans in the student section that thought it was a good idea to talk crap to our students. So they were basically asking for it in my opinion.

Here's how I saw it...I know this is going to sound very non-observant on my part, but I didn't notice that somebody was hurt at first. I made no connection between the "Ala-bama" chant (ala Orange-White) and the injury. We were down, because we were losing, and here comes this loud chant, and people tried to drown them out by booing and failed. I felt like we were losing control of Neyland, and then the students jumped in with the "F U Bama." I didn't see or hear anybody in section O that had a big problem at that moment with the profane cheer. Nobody in my section started chanting, but, at the same time, I didn't want the students to stop. I did have a problem with people taking the high road and calling into the call-in show to blast the students for doing it. Somebody even called for repurcussions.

I also think that whoever brought up the organized, tradition-rich "We just beat the hell out of you" cheer, made a great point. A curse word is a curse word, and I am sure there are a TON of people who substitute in their own curse words during that song.

A curse word is a curse word

Come on . . . You know their is a curse word hierarchy and F-bombs in public are right up near the top.

I know about these things. I play a lot of golf.

I do know that using the "C" word in a fight with your girlfriend is definitely going nuclear!

Then, where draw the line? I don't think the student's chant was generally appropriate, but, at that moment, I had no problem with it. I didn't have a problem with the Alabama chant either, other than the fact that we were losing. There were Bama fans in my section, and I wasn't about to chant like that at them, because of that being inappropriate and to avoid a riot. The word choice should been better, but I still, like many others, liked the fact that the Alabama fans were drowned out. At the time, we needed to get the momentum back (not saying the chant won the game), and the chant helped shut up any fans who still cheered after seeing the injury. After the game, I even shook hands with a Bama fan who was sitting next to me. :eek:hmy: I felt like I had been competing with him over the opportunities to cheer. Great victory for UT!

I was at the Georgia game and tailgated down there this year, and it was the first time i heard the MFer version of "Who's that coming down the track.." about 150 times that day. All before the game that is.

My girlfriend and I didn't join in on the chant, even though it is a word in my vocabulary. It didn't feel right to me, but I was sure glad the more inebriated kids around me chose to. It was obvious to me that Coker was down... and the cheer didn't get started until AFTER I realized the fact. The boos weren't enough to shut them up, the other cheer managed it.

Was anyone here at the 2002 Bama game, when Croyle pitched the ball from his knee, to their running back, whose knee was on the ground, who turned it into about a 20 yard gain? The bullsh** chant was out in force. It was not only the student section either, about every UT fan in Neyland was involved in that chant, which continued for at least 5 to 10 minutes!

I totally agree with you on this. They would not have shut up on their on accord. I was sitting right beside the Bama section in AA and they knew exactly what they were doing. Numerous individuals told them they had no class and to show some respect and all they did was shrug and yell louder. So even though I didn't join in the F-U chant, I was glad it shut them up.
