What's best for the future of UT football: Dooley teams win or... (merged)

8-4 would be the historical winning percentage for UT. I fail to understand why some delusional, koolaid blinded fans think UT is somehow a 10 win program.
It's stupid to use winning percentage to determine what we should shoot for. By that logic, there aren't even any teams that can expect to win 9 games a year. We're a top 10 program, so I'm not sure how some fans content with mediocrity think UT shouldn't expect to be competitive.

Because UT has won 3 NC, numerous SEC championships, and has the goal to win more. Maybe you should follow Vandy, they are the fans happy with 8-4.

8-4 doubles Dooley's wins last season at LA Tech while cutting his loses in half. If he goes 8-4 at UT, that's quite an improvement from where he was.

Thus, I think you have to drink a little koolaid to expect 8-4 from CDD. That is the realistic upside.

I don't think Vol fans will be happy with it even if it happens. His best shot at 8-4 is in his third season. It will feel pretty good by then, imo. The question was about how long will it feel good.

This forecast (doom and gloom to some, but seemingly realistic to me) doesn't mean I want the Vols to lose. It's just the reality of the program. The current state of the program is not Dooley's fault. His role just started.

CDD does have the potential to recruit well and get the program in better shape by the time he leaves.

If he can coach well, that will be revelation, but it is not a realistic expectation evidenced in his past record as a HFC. If he can coach, he could be at UT for quite a while.

He has his chance. I'm not taking that away from him. Surely, he must know that his past record is not one that indicates he will be a success at UT. That's probably part of what motivates him. He clearly has something to prove, and it's not just to those of us forecasting 'doom and gloom' now. It's likely to himself as well.

Dooley will do a great job and have us in the seccg in a couple of years and playing for the nc in 3 or 4 years.

I agree. A 10 win season isn't exactly easy. I would love to be able to expect 10 win seasons every year, but that's too much to ask for, especially in the SEC.

Sure a 10-win season isnt easy. But honestly, as a fan I expect them to go 12-0 every year. Is it realistic most of the time? Hell No. But I want my team to win and win a lot. SEC or not. End of story.

Wanting and expecting are two different things...expecting us to go 12-0 every year means you honestly expect us to win pretty much every single national championship for the rest of your life...

Yep. Good bump. Coming into this season, the ceiling was 10 wins, which would have resulted in a loss of several key players to the pros and a step backward to hopefully reload. So, the initial prediction of a ceiling of 10 wins in Year 3 was spot on. 10 wins is most likely out the window now for this season.

It's hard to remember how far out of reality this prediction of mediocrity was for so many folks. At the time, the feeling was that we were rebuilding and that UT football was on its way back to where we belonged, among the elite teams in the SEC.

The point of this thread was to note that Hammy made a very bad hiring decision and that the program would be set back for decades depending on the results that followed.

CDD's first three seasons were somewhat predictable... but, in reality, the 10-win ceiling didn't account for the soft teams we added later (this was back when our off season schedule included Cal and Oregon instead of GA State and Akron). So, 10-wins, prior to Dooley, didn't sound quite so impressive as it does now.

I do agree that we won't win 10 this year even with the weaker than expected schedule. So, folks should consider that reality in thinking about the program's direction going forward, imo.

I don't think it's the number of wins that has so many people set off against Dooley.

It's the manner and margin of the losses that does it combined with the utter lack of any discernible improvement. At least for me.

Yep, IIRC, that's what ultimately did CPF in.

I just don't want folks to get fooled by what our wins really are... mostly against crappy teams that we didn't even used to bother playing.

Stupid thread. There are so many assumptions in the hypothetical that it is rendered useless.

I hope Dooley proves himself over the remaining 9 games, wins out, wins the SECCG, wins the NCG, gets voted coach of the year, and we move forward. If he fails miserably, we can deal with it at that point, AFTER ALL QUESTIONS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED ON THE FIELD. It really isn't that hard, is it?

It's only hard for people who were told he would fail and still don't realize that HE'S ALREADY FAILED MISERABLY ON THE FIELD. :hi:

Cal and Oregon were never on the 2012 schedule.

Also, it's a stretch to say Hamilton made a bad hiring decision when he hired Dooley, because our options were severely limited.

My opinion of Dooley, when he was hired, was that we had to give him three seasons, no matter what, so he could recruit us back to 85 players, and then we could evaluate whether or not he was a long-term solution. If we fire Dooley after this season, he will have left us with a better roster than the one he took over, and the timing for a new hire will be a lot better.

what are you talking about?

And if that plays out for the rest of the year, we will have a new coach. Your hypothetical, though, is still dumb because it poses a rhetorical question: "Is it better for Dooley to win six games per year and remain the coach..." or "get a new coach?" Gee, Einstein, let me think about that one.

What drives me crazy about you and your brethren is that you are obsessed with seeing this team fail just so you can say "I told you so." If you go back and look at my posts, I have been critical of Dooley since at least the Kentucky game of last year. BUT, I don't want the team to confirm my suspiscions. I hope the team and Dooley succeed because he is the coach of UT.

And, you might want to take your condescending attitude down a notch or two. You never know who you are demeaning. They might just have more education and success than you do with that might MBA.
