What's the timeframe on a return to relevance?

It is best not to ask...If this staff is stout in recruiting and coaching, we could be back in three years, give or take--but only if they are good. If they are average, we'll be asking this question again in three years with another new coach.

That's part of the reason I posed the question. I am not sure we can afford to hit the reset button again in three years. If this is going to be a 5 year, or longer, rebuild it's better if people can come out and be straight about it now. Otherwise, we're going to continue to be plagued by our own expectations.

ugh. I'd rather not. If this staff can pull an All-freshman team caliber RB, a couple of DBs and a couple of pass rushing LBs, this thing could be a lot better next year.
I think they will be coached up regardless but for a return to glory its going to take a few stud classes. Very curious to see if Jones has any rabbits in his hat for this class but I won't judge his abiilities until the 14 class.

i believe his second year will be a harder year than his first.by his third year he should be winning 8games.he needs time to recruit to his system and the fans need to be patient.if he is given time,he may turn out to be a good coach.i'm giving him 4 years to get us back.....

In 2014, we will have uga and usc on the road, but will have uf, bama, and mizzu at home. If we are good enough to win the road games, then we should be very competitive at home. All of this depends on how the players buy in to CBJ, recruiting, and also conditioning. To run the type of football that CBJ wants to, the Vols will have to improve in the strength and conditioning department. I think 2013 will more than likely be 7-5 plus a bowl win.

This thread is not meant to be a "woe is us" discussion. I'd just like a serious talk about where we are and how long it will take to get us where we all want to be. This is going to take a building up job. There's some good pieces in place for 2013 and if we get lucky, maybe we get a RB like Green who can get behind that experienced OL and batter some people into submission. Otherwise, I think that just getting bowl games will be a challenge for the next couple of seasons and any success we have beyond that will be accomplished only by recruiting better athletes to come to UTK while we are still losing on the field which is a daunting task for any staff. If anyone has a roadmap, I'd love to read about it here.

Just getting to bowl games ? We should have been in them the last 2 seasons -- 6 and 6 shouldnt be that difficult -- next season 6 wins is not unreasonable to forsee

Who knows...but I still believe we are cursed...

So...with our luck of coaches and players...probably years and years...

at a guess,i would think 5 years, with some ups and downs, next years expectations should be 5 maybe 6 wins, but it is hard to tell, with a new set of coaches and having to get the players to buy into the new scheme of things,we will know more after spring practice and after NSD,hopefully they will pull in some surprises this year, but who knows, the give them 2 or 3 year and win or fire em crowd, needs to settle down, financially,i don't think they can afford another staff rebuild

The brutal nature of next year's schedule combined with losing most of the people responsible for our production on offense has been talked about enough that I don't think most of us expect to contend for the East next season. We're going to lose the bulk of the starters on both lines after next season. Given the time it usually takes to get incoming lineman strong and big enough to be an effective starter in the SEC, I'm not sure that we will have much of a DL in 2014. It just seems like the program is completely out of synch where we're constantly going back square one at some crucial area while peaking at another. We're basically at the bottom the SEC right now so how many years should it take to get this thing set to rights?

Yes, we do keep goiong back to square one alot. However; had Dooley not lost the game to Ky. in 2011, things would have been fine.

Have you noticed that after the loss to Ky. many of the assistant coachs abandoned ship? Wilcox, and others left before the Titantic sank.

Had SOME of those assistants remained here, we would have had a better record this season. With Wilcox, the close games that we lost to Miss. St, Missouri, Florida, USC, UGA, would have likely been victories.

We would have posted a 10 win season and gone to a good bowl game and had more recruiting momentum.

I figure that it will take us 5 seasons to get to a position in which people on the national level mention us in their conversations. It took Majors 5 seasons, so I am guessing that it will take that long now too....

Aw Heck. I'm all in.....I say that we'll be surprised immediately. No prediction other than exceeding expectations.

If we hire a great coach, 2 years. I keep seeing this 5-10 year crap, but literally nothing can set us back 5 years except for hiring bad coaches.

Like Special Ed said, it's just a matter of how many coaches it takes us to find the right one. When we do, it won't take long at all.

It all depends on Jones. If he can recruit, I mean really recruit we could be back in 2 years. If the recruiting is mediocre then 5 years minimum.

I quick return is possible with the right HC.

Stability requires patience. How much more can you take? Worse thing that ever happened to Tennessee football is the expansion of the internet

Is trying to own the state of Tennessee the right approach to "really" recruiting?

I'll return the relevance is dependent upon how many wins we get against quality oponents. If we pull off wins next year against any of the top teams in the SEC East we will start seeing results in our recruiting. No kid wants to play for a team that he thinks is going to have a losing record. We have to show that our problems in the past are were a result of bad coaching not bad players. realistically we need to be looking at a 3 to 5 your window before we actually contend for the SEC East. We will probably go 6 and 6 next year and add a Win in each subsequent year
