What's the timeframe on a return to relevance?

It all depends on Jones. If he can recruit, I mean really recruit we could be back in 2 years. If the recruiting is mediocre then 5 years minimum.

By recruit, do you mean get the right players for the system or get the highest possible star players for the fanbase's ego? Just making sure we're on the same page here.

2-3 years. Next year is a big year though. Itching it is a 6-6 or 5-7 type year because of schedule, but beating any of these would be big for the vol psyche. Oregon, Alabama, UF, UGA, USCe. A win against any of those and the season would be more successful than the past 3

UT football is a broken brand right now it could take 2 or 3 year just to restore the name. Our rebuilding job looks more like what SOS had to do at USCe vice what St Nick had @ Bama. Goes without saying that recruiting is key but I like the staff Jones has put together.

2018 is my guess....we may have one decent year between now and then, but that is the year we will see consistency restored in the program.

most reasonable answer in the thread.

However, if UT follows my advice and drops out of the SEC to move to the ACC in 2014, we could win the ACC and be a BCS team in 2015. We'll be an average SEC team, which in the ACC gets you a ring.

The brutal nature of next year's schedule combined with losing most of the people responsible for our production on offense has been talked about enough that I don't think most of us expect to contend for the East next season. We're going to lose the bulk of the starters on both lines after next season. Given the time it usually takes to get incoming lineman strong and big enough to be an effective starter in the SEC, I'm not sure that we will have much of a DL in 2014. It just seems like the program is completely out of synch where we're constantly going back square one at some crucial area while peaking at another. We're basically at the bottom the SEC right now so how many years should it take to get this thing set to rights?

Volunteer Mountain William......we will return to form in 2015...In the meantime we will 17-9 over the next two years.

Does anyone know whether CBJ is recruiting for a system or is he recruiting best available and adapting to the talent?

CBJ will pull one upset next year (USCe). He will bring the swagger. 7-5 next year. Solid recruiting class. Year 2 will be breakout year and return to top.

I believe this could well be the case. Remember John Blake at Oklahoma in the late 90's? He always spoke of character etc., etc. which is important, but along came Bob Stoops.
Oklahoma went 7-5 in his first year, then 13-0 the next year with the same players Blake couldn't win with. Why not Tennessee?

Yeah, I know we play in the SEC. That is why we will be successful sooner rather than later. Go Vols - enjoy the ride back up.

I'm about as far from a recruiting expert as you an get, but I would think that they would be recruiting best available that fits the system they run.

Realistically I think you are looking at a minimum of 4 years before we will be a factor in the east. This recruiting classes will be what it is, because recruits want to see his product on the field at UT. If UT shows promise next year by beating everyone they should and maybe getting an upset here or there and being competitive in the rest it will turn some heads and recruiting will improve. If there is steady improvement on the field and in recruiting by his fourth year his first true class will be contributing juniors. He should be competing for the east. If not we're going to be searching for a new coach again after year 5.

A few things that need to happen for us to get back.

1. Players buying into what the coaches are selling
2. Ability to coach up the players they currently have and the ones they recruit over the next couple of years.
3. Get us back into the top 10 in recruiting. Of course this isn't going to happen until we start winning, so the staff has to accomplish #2 first.
4. Defense and how quickly they can fix it and get it back to being a top 15 unit.
5. Proper game management from the coaching staff. It will be a novel idea around here given what we've seen the last three years.
6. Find us a damn kicker that can actually make FGs and convert extra points. It can't be that hard, other teams manage to find them.

If these things happen, then 3 years to get back into the race for the east and being at least a top 15 program again.

well. When CBJ gets fired in 3 years, and then we bring in another coach....well, its gonna be a while.. People keep saying 6 or 7 wins next year.. Who we gonna beat besides AP, SO. Al, Wky, And Ky. looks like 4 wins to me. Every other team is head and shoulders beyond us, yes even VANDY. It will be a while b4 we are good. That is why this coaching search was so important. But with A bammer and gayer in office, what else is there to expect.

I remember thinking when Lame Kiffin bolted, that it was going to set us back 10 years.

I hope you are wrong, but I am beginning to wonder. I recall thinking in 2010, while watching Bama "kick us to the curb" in Knoxville, that it was going to take Dooley at least three (3) seasons from then (2013) to get us out of the bottom tier of teams in the league.

I now think it will be even longer because of the fact that while we now have 85 players on scholarship (or thereabouts) the talent level is clearly not competitive with mid and upper tier teams in the SEC. Dooley's recruiting, while pretty good on a national level, was not competitive against all of the teams we are competing against in the SEC.

If Jones is the man to get it done, he will need at least four (4) full seasons to show some progress.

That's part of the reason I posed the question. I am not sure we can afford to hit the reset button again in three years. If this is going to be a 5 year, or longer, rebuild it's better if people can come out and be straight about it now. Otherwise, we're going to continue to be plagued by our own expectations.

"Expectation is a prison".

Hard question to answer. A lot of things can happen. All I can say is that it wont be soon enough.

I read a lot of 'if's' in most comments......if, if, if; "if a frong had wings, it would not bump it's"...you know the rest. As most has stated, it comes down to recruiting. Not a knock against CBJ, but there are better coaches with deeper roots in the recruiting hot beds of america (the south); IMO, this is the hugh downside to CBJ. Therefore, I don't see much light at the end of the tunnel. Could be wrong.
